Book excerpt: This volume has three goals with respect to the interplay between philosophy and behavioral psychology's experimental, applied, and interpretive levels of knowing. It aims to examine core principles in the philosophy of science, as they are interpreted by and relate to behavioral psychology; how these core principles interact with different problem areas in the study of human behavior; and how experimental, applied, and interpretive analyses complement one another to advance the understanding of behavior and, in so doing, also the philosophy of science.
Download or read book Verbal Behavior written by B. F. Skinner and published by Digireads.com. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1957, "Verbal Behavior" is the widely influential work on linguistics and behaviorism by B. F. Skinner, the renowned American psychologist, social philosopher, and author. Considered to be one of the most important psychologists of the 20th century, Skinner was the Edgar Pierce Professor of Psychology at Harvard University for nearly twenty years and expanded on his work on the study of human behavior and the use of language over decades. "Verbal Behavior" was one of his most influential published works and had a profound impact on the study of behavior and human language since it first appeared. Skinner rejected the emphasis on experimental research when studying behavior, especially verbal cues and responses, and instead focused on theory and examples drawn from literature, film, and personal experiences with family, friends, and colleagues. In this ground-breaking work, Skinner applied his theories of verbal cues and responses, and their accompanying behavioral components, to better understand why people say, write, gesture, and think the way that they do. Decades later many of Skinner's theories continue to be tested and discussed by psychologists, behaviorists, linguists, and philosophers. "Verbal Behavior" endures as a fascinating and thought-provoking examination of verbal language, the most human of human behaviors. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Download or read book Science And Human Behavior written by B.F Skinner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychology classic—a detailed study of scientific theories of human nature and the possible ways in which human behavior can be predicted and controlled—from one of the most influential behaviorists of the twentieth century and the author of Walden Two. “This is an important book, exceptionally well written, and logically consistent with the basic premise of the unitary nature of science. Many students of society and culture would take violent issue with most of the things that Skinner has to say, but even those who disagree most will find this a stimulating book.” —Samuel M. Strong, The American Journal of Sociology “This is a remarkable book—remarkable in that it presents a strong, consistent, and all but exhaustive case for a natural science of human behavior…It ought to be…valuable for those whose preferences lie with, as well as those whose preferences stand against, a behavioristic approach to human activity.” —Harry Prosch, Ethics

Book Synopsis The Verbal Behavior Approach by : Mary Lynch Barbera
Download or read book The Verbal Behavior Approach written by Mary Lynch Barbera and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2007-05-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it. This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behavior, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills, that would benefit any child. This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the Verbal Behavior approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.
Book Synopsis Rule-Governed Behavior by : Steven C. Hayes
Download or read book Rule-Governed Behavior written by Steven C. Hayes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-06-02 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal learning and human learning traditions have been distinguishable within psychology since the start of the discipline and are to this day. The human learning wing was interested in the development of psychological functions in human organisms and proceeded directly to their examination. The animal learning wing was not distinguished by a corresponding interest in animal behavior per se. Rather, the animal learners studied animal behavior in order to identify principles of behavior of relevance to humans as well as other organisms. The two traditions, in other words, did not differ so much on goals as on strategies. It is not by accident that so many techniques of modem applied psychol ogy have emerged from the animal laboratory. That was one of the ultimate purposes of this work from the very beginning. The envisioned extension to humans was not just technological, however. Many animal researchers, B. F. Skinner most prominently among them, recognized that direct basic research with humans might ultimately be needed in certain areas but that it was wise first to build a strong foundation in the controlled environment of the animal laboratory. In a sense, animal learning was always in part a human research program in development.
