Book Synopsis A Review of the Forest Service Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) Network by : John Zachariassen
Download or read book A Review of the Forest Service Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) Network written by John Zachariassen and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The RAWS network and RAWS data-use systems are closely reviewed and summarized in this report. RAWS is an active program created by the many land-management agencies that share a common need for accurate and timely weather data from remote locations for vital operational and program decisions specific to wildland and prescribed fires. A RAWS measures basic observable weather parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation as well as "fuel stick" temperature. Data from almost 1,900 stations deployed across the conterminous United States, Alaska, and Hawaii are now routinely used to calculate and forecast daily fire danger indices, components, and adjective ratings. Fire business applications include the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS), fire behavior, and fire use. Findings point to the fact that although the RAWS program works and provides needed weather data in support of fire operations, there are inefficiencies and significant problem areas that require leadership attention at the National level."
Book Synopsis The Urban Climatic Map by : Edward Ng
Download or read book The Urban Climatic Map written by Edward Ng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid urbanization, higher density and more compact cities have brought about a new science of urban climatology. An understanding of the mapping of this phenomenon is crucial for urban planners. The book brings together experts in the field of Urban Climatic Mapping to provide the state of the art understanding on how urban climatic knowledge can be made available and utilized by urban planners. The book contains the technology, methodology, and various focuses and approaches of urban climatic map making. It illustrates this understanding with examples and case studies from around the world, and it explains how urban climatic information can be analysed, interpreted and applied in urban planning. The book attempts to bridge the gap between the science of urban climatology and the practice of urban planning. It provides a useful one-stop reference for postgraduates, academics and urban climatologists wishing to better understand the needs for urban climatic knowledge in city planning; and urban planners and policy makers interested in applying the knowledge to design future sustainable cities and quality urban spaces.

Book Synopsis Wildland fires Forest Service and BLM need better information and systematic approach for assessing the risks of environmental effects : report to congressional requesters. by : Barry T. Hill
Download or read book Wildland fires Forest Service and BLM need better information and systematic approach for assessing the risks of environmental effects : report to congressional requesters. written by Barry T. Hill and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of fire suppression, as well as changing land management practices, have caused vegetation to accumulate and become altered on federal lands. Concerns about the effects of wildland fires have increased efforts to reduce fuels on federal lands. These efforts also have environmental effects. The requesters asked GAO to (1) describe effects from fires on the environment, (2) assess the information gathered by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on such effects, and (3) assess the agencies approaches to environmental risks associated with reducing fuels. This report recommends that the Secretaries of Agriculture and the Interior (1) develop a plan to implement the agencies monitoring framework, (2) develop guidance that formalizes the assessment of landscape-level risks to ecosystems, and (3) clarify existing guidance, working with the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), to assess the risks of environmental effects from reducing fuels.

Book Synopsis Air Conditioning with Natural Energy by : Xianting Li
Download or read book Air Conditioning with Natural Energy written by Xianting Li and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-06-05 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Conditioning with Natural Energy is a comprehensive examination of the principles, theory, applications, and energy saving performance of newly developed technologies for air conditioning using natural energy. Based on the latest research and real-world case studies from North America, Europe, and China, the book provides an engineering perspective on the design and application of air conditioning from multiple climates. The book is divided into two parts. Part I examines the range of air conditioning technologies that use natural energy. This includes enhanced treatment technologies for outdoor air such as earth-to-air heat exchanger, fresh air pre-handling system using shallow geothermal energy, as well as newly developed technologies such as pipe-embedded wall, nocturnal cooling wall, and pipe-embedded window systems. With particular focus on applications in China, Part II provides real world case studies from multiple climatic zones, demonstrating the practical application and implementation of these technologies. Each case study analyses the carbon emission reduction potential, energy saving potential and the operational performance of the technologies. Air Conditioning with Natural Energy is an invaluable review of the latest developments in air conditioning technologies for practicing engineers, researchers, and students involved in the design and implementation of HVAC systems or working in the fields of thermal and mechanical engineering and the sustainable built environment. - Explains the theory and principles underpinning the latest and most important air conditioning technologies with natural energy - Provides a new decision-making index and revised degree hours to evaluate the energy saving potential of different air conditioning technologies with natural energy, helping readers identify the most suitable air conditioning technology for any climate zone - Analyzes the energy saving potential of different technologies from real projects in different climate zones and calculates the contribution of carbon emission reduction that can be achieved globally
