Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venom research and technology has advanced greatly, rapidly transforming our knowledge of reptile venoms. Research advances, like the development of molecular systematics, provide the framework necessary to reconstruct the evolutionary history of glands and fangs. Such research developments have expanded our understanding of venom's evolution and its usefulness in therapeutic development. The results of this punctuated toxin molecular evolutionary expansion include protein neofunctionalization. While these changes may impact antivenom efficacy, this molecular diversity also facilitates their usefulness in the development of novel drug therapies. Venomous Reptiles And Their Toxins brings together the world's leading toxinologists in this comprehensive study of the entire scope of reptile venoms, from clinical effects to evolution to drug design and development. The book contains detailed applied chapters on clinical care of the envenomed patient, ineffective traditional or modern remedies, occupational considerations involved in the maintenance of institutional venomous reptile collections, veterinary care for venomous reptiles and research methods used in venom research. This book also devotes a chapter to each toxin class found in reptile venoms, detailing the full trajectory of research on the peptide or protein in question. These chapters discuss each toxin's respective role in the envenomation process through to how each has been explored for their biomedical potential. This book is a unique resource for anyone working with venomous reptiles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Venom of Heloderma There exists much difference of Opinion in regard to the real function of the poison gland. Does it merely take up from the blood the poisonous material produced by other cells, or does it actually manufacture the venom from non poisonous substances supplied through blood or lymph? Calmette and Faust accepted the first view. In snakes the blood and, as Flexner and Noguchi found, even the ova contain a venom very similar to that secreted by the poison gland. Calmette and Faust believe, therefore, that the cells of the poison gland have a selective affinity for the venom circulating in the blood. Inas much as Calmette noticed that the heat resistance of the poisonous substance present in the blood differs somewhat from that of the venom secreted by the poison gland, he assumes that a precursor which is poisonous and has been produced by other cells is slightly modified in the poison gland and then secreted. This difference in the heat resistance of the two poisons he regards as a reason sufficient to exclude the view of Phisalix and Bertrand, who regard the venom circulating in the blood as being manufactured in the venom gland and eliminated in the blood through a mechanism related to internal secretion. They found, accordingly, that after extirpation of the venom gland of snakes the blood lost its toxic properties. In H eloderma conditions are less complicated. Here the venom can not be found anywhere in the body except in the poison gland. Neither does the blood become poisonous after extirpation Of the poison glands, as should be expected if the poison glands served merely as a place of elimination for the venom prepared elsewhere. We can therefore be certain that in the case of H eloderma the poison gland is the place where the venom is produced out of non-poisonous material carried to the gland. Such a conclusion is also in accordance with the view that the granules of the gland are the carriers Of the venom. Book excerpt: The Teeth of Non-Mammalian Vertebrates is the first comprehensive publication devoted to the teeth and dentitions of living fishes, amphibians and reptiles. The book presents a comprehensive survey of the amazing variety of tooth forms among non-mammalian vertebrates, based on descriptions of approximately 400 species belonging to about 160 families. The text is lavishly illustrated with more than 600 high-quality color and monochrome photographs of specimens gathered from top museums and research workers from around the world, supplemented by radiographs and micro-CT images. This stimulating work discusses the functional morphology of feeding, the attachment of teeth, and the relationship of tooth form to function, with each chapter accompanied by a comprehensive, up-to-date reference list. Following the descriptions of the teeth and dentitions in each class, four chapters review current topics with considerable research activity: tooth development; tooth replacement; and the structure, formation and evolution of the dental hard tissues. This timely book, authored by internationally recognized teachers and researchers in the field, also reflects the resurgence of interest in the dentitions of non-mammalian vertebrates as experimental systems to help understand genetic changes in evolution of teeth and jaws. - Features more than 600 images, including numerous high-quality photographs from internationally-recognized researchers and world class collections - Offers guidance on tooth morphology for classification and evolution of vertebrates - Provides detailed coverage of the dentition of all living groups of non-mammalian vertebrates

It provides key information on how poisons affect the body, how the body responds to a foreign substance, how poisonings are diagnosed, and how poisonings are treated. Coverage includes every organ system of every species of animal with details on each body system's susceptibility to poison. Poisons affect animals differently depending on species, breed, age, gender, health status, and reproductive status. This resource addresses these differences, allowing the veterinarian to determine the class of toxicant, the mechanism of action, and the proper course of treatment. If confronted with an unknown poison, the information in this book will assist the veterinarian in formulating a list of potential poisons based on the clinical signs that the animal is exhibiting, and in choosing the appropriate tests to narrow the list to one or a few possible poisons. - Most comprehensive toxicology book available - Written in a user-friendly style that makes it easy to master the content - Covers poisonings in both large and small domestic animals - The Principles of Toxicology section provides comprehensive coverage of concepts & terminology, toxicokinetics, treatments, and regulatory information - The Manifestations of Toxicoses section is devoted to differentiating between poisons based on lesions and clinical signs - The Classes of Toxicants section offers detailed information on each poison, including sources, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical signs and lesions, diagnostic testing, and treatment - The author is board-certified in toxicology, and the contributors are all toxicologists and educators, ensuring authoritative, up-to-date clinical information
