Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Stearns and his collaboration with the Venini glassworks in the early Sixties in the new chapter of the series "Le Stanze del Vetro". The American artist Thomas Stearns (1936-2006) collaborated with the Venini glassworks as guest designer between 1960 and 1962. Thomas Stearns designed elegant blown-glasspieces with irregular features using various materials. Stearns was the first American to design for Venini; he won a on Fulbright Travel Grant, left Cranbrook Academy, and showed up in Murano with new ideas, but absolutely no knowledge of the Italian language. But, from this potentially disastrous situation grew a collection of ground-breaking designs that actually won the "Best of Show" award at the Venice Bienale of 1962. When the judges found out that the winner was not Italian, but a monolingual American, they actually rescinded the award. By then, however, it was pretty impossible to deny that Thomas Stearns had created something really special. Stearns' amazing designs proved too difficult to put into mass production, which made them even more special.
Book Synopsis Paolo Venini and His Furnace by : Marino Barovier

Book excerpt: "A protagonist of Murano glass in the 20th century, Paolo Venini (1985-1959) with his passionate activity spanning almost forty years, made a decisive contribution to the vitality of the art of glass, achieving extraordinary results soon recognized also internally. A native of Milan and a former partner in the Cappellin Venini firm, in 1925 he founded the V.S.M. Venini & C. glassworks with Napoleone Martinuzzi and Francesco Zecchin as partners, from whom he separated in 1932. Becoming president of the company, he worked untiringly as the undisputed director and manager of the Venini firm up to his death, which occurred in 1959. In defining the catalogue of the glassworks, he also contributed as the inventor of new series of glass pieces in themed-1930s, but in particular during the 1950s. This volume, the fruit of in-depth research based mainly on the unpublished material coming from the Venini Historical Archive, illustrates principally this aspect of his activity through a succession of some three hundred models. For the greater part of these Paolo Venini had recourse to the traditional Murano techniques, of which he gave a refined and innovative interpretation, resulting in the Zanfirico reticello, Mosaico zanfirico and Mosaico multicolore series and the highly coloured a murine glass pieces. The influence of Nordic design was also significant, being reinterpreted through Murano eyes. The volume also documents the contribution of the artists who worked with him intermittently between the 1930s and the 1950s, called upon by Venini himself or arriving independently because of their interest in glass and/or the quality of the work at the furnace. Two hundred and fifty glass pieces tell the story of the collaboration of the Swedish ceramic artists Tyra Lundgren, of Gio Ponti, Piero Fornasetti, the painters Eugene Berman and Riccardo Licata, but also the Americans Ken Scott and Charles Lin Tissot. To them must be added the architects, Massimo Vignelli and Tobia Scarpa, and the Norwegian designer, Grete Korsmo." -- Book jacket.

Book excerpt: "Venini. Catalogue Raisonne 1921-1986" offers an in-depth account of the involving company history of the glassworks set up by Paolo Venini in 1921 and carried forward by members of the Venini family up until 1986, the year in which the business was sold off. Alongside the comprehensive catalogue containing some 250 descriptions detailing each item produced in over six decades of activity, the book's curator Anna Venini Diaz de Santillana has traced the history of the 'Vetrerie Venini' glasshouse through each successive master craftsman's term as art director: Napoleone Martinuzzi, Carlo Scarpa, Paolo Venini himself, Tomaso Buzzi, Fulvio Bianconi, and Ludovico Diaz de Santillana. The careful analysis underlying each critical essay and the breadth of topics covered make this book an invaluable reference work on the creative enterprise and outstanding achievements of Venini & C., long acknowledged as an international hallmark of quality in the applied arts. With its rich array of illustrations and catalogue of the firm's key production items, and an extensive reference section comprising glossary, bibliography, and list of exhibitions, this book is the most exhaustive directory of the Venini glasshouse's production. Download or read book Tomaso Buzzi written by Marino Barovier and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spirited protagonist of the Milan “neoclassicist” movement, a friend and associate of Gio Ponti, and a partner of Il Labirinto – together with Ponti and Paolo Venini among others- between 1932 and 1933 Tomaso Buzzi established a fruitful partnership with the Murano glassworks. He would occasionally return there in later years. 0This volume reconstructs the architect’s entire glass production, which until today had been rather incomplete; only a few pieces were well-known. Thanks to careful documentary research, we now know the context in which he worked and we could highlight this unique creative contribution to the pieces he made and to the techniques used to produce them. Buzzi introduced objects that were often inspired by ancient art and he designed a type of opaque glass with different coloured layers and a gold leaf finish, which according to the tone gave rise to the laguna, alba, alga and tramonto glass. The catalogue offers a collection of over three hundred models that range from vases to light fittings produced by the glassworks, but it also includes Buzzi’s projects for specific buyers and the designs that were never implemented. The architect’s work is documented by a rich array of historic photos and unpublished designs from the Venini historic archive, and by sketches, also never published, preserved in the Buzzi archive at the Scarzuola (Montegabbione), that tell the story of a great passion.00Exhibition: Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, Italy (14.09.2014 - 11.01.2015).

Download or read book Napoleone Martinuzzi written by Marino Barovier and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Napoleone Martinuzzi, an artist ... became a partner of Paolo Venini in 1925. In his capacity as the artistic director of V.S.M. Venini & C. he designed marvelous objects until 1931. This book reviews his entire production as a glass designer, consisting of about 600 works identified after lengthy and thorough research. Unpublished records in the Archivio Storico Venini have allowed researchers to appreciate the full extent of Martinuzzi's contribution to the factory's production and to identify many of his designs, some of which were previously unknown. After devising elegant clear blown glass objects, the artist went on to explore previously unseen matter like bubble glass and opaque glass in intense and solid colours. In so doing Martinuzzi desgned a wide repertoire of vases, cups, lights, and peculiar decorative objects like fruits, coloured glass creatures and succulent plants, some of which were monumental in size."--Page 4 of cover.
Book Synopsis Craftwork as Problem Solving by : Trevor H.J. Marchand
Download or read book Craftwork as Problem Solving written by Trevor H.J. Marchand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a cross-disciplinary group of anthropologists, researchers of craft, and designer-makers to enumerate and explore the diversity and complexity of problem-solving tactics and strategies employed by craftspeople, together with the key social, cultural, and environmental factors that give rise to particular ways of problem solving. Presenting rich, textured ethnographic studies of craftspeople at work around the world, Craftwork as Problem Solving examines the intelligent practices involved in solving a variety of problems and the ways in which these are perceived and evaluated both by makers and creators themselves, and by the societies in which they work. With attention to local factors such as training regimes and formal education, access to tools, socialisation and cultural understanding, budgetary constraints and market demands, changing technologies and materials, and political and economic regimes, this book sheds fresh light on the multifarious forms of intelligence involved in design and making, inventing and manufacturing, and cultivating and producing. As such, it will appeal to scholars of anthropology, sociology, and cultural geography, as well as to craftspeople with interests in creativity, skilful practice, perception and ethnography.
