The original capitals, as they obviously represent a rough system of emphasis, may serve to a clearer understanding of the play. The author himself may have arranged them as they stand' in the quarto of 1682. At all events they were considered sufficiently important to be reproduced with creditable care, almost accuracy, by the printers of the second quarto of 1696. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tourist in Italy To the eye of the stranger the aspect of Venice first pre sents itself like some vision of the deep, while her history fills the mind with awe and wonder at the stern and fearful realities and heroic recollections with which it abounds. She stands alone and unparalleled in the annals of Italy's tempestuous rep'ublics, - those hypocrites of liberty, which recoiled from foreign despotism only the more effectually (to exalt themselves, by harassing and oppressing each other. While torn by internal factions and successive revolutions, the rest of Italy wielded at will their fierce democracies, Venice preserved unshaken her high and palmy state, based on the deep, invisible foundations of her more than Machiavellian system, - the combination of petty tyrants, which, unlike that of slaves, seldom fails to accomplish the objects it has in view. If he voyage by the little steamer that plies between the Riva degli Schiavoni and Fusina (whence a steam tram will carry him to the S. Sofia station at Padua, near the Arena Chapel), he will pass along the Old route from the mainland, and enjoy a last and certainly a fond and lingering view Of the wonderful city as the boat slowly steams away from Venice through the canals Of the Zattere and Of Fusina. The train to Padua passes along the road that follows the course Of the Canale di Brenta, affording glimpses Of many an Old patrician palace in picturesque decay. He will touch at Oriago where Jacopo del Cassero, who entreated Dante's prayers in the ante-purgatorio, was overtaken and murdered by the assassins of the tyrant Azzo VIII. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice Night had fallen as they drew near to Belmont. The moon light lay spread among the statues and cypresses in Portia's garden, where on a grassy bank the two lovers, Lorenzo and Jessica, talked together in low antiphons such as lovers use, and in the pauses of their talk gazed and drank in the beauty of the heavens. Word had come that the mistress of the house would return home before daybreak and close upon this came a mes senger with the news that Bassanio, too, might be expected. Lorenzo called for music: no gentler or more gracious welcome could there be for the home-comers, should they be arriving; and if not, still he and Jessica could sit till the moonlight faded, and let the sweet sounds creep in their ears, while the stillness of the garden, the embracing silent night, made harmony with the hidden lutes, as the listening heart might hear its own beating harmonies whispered back from the stars paving the floor of heaven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice, Vol. 1 of 2 For several years past I have devoted my self to collecting and arranging material for a book to embody the idea I had thus enter tained. I earnestly hope it may meet a want on the part of tourists, especially Americans, who, so far as my experience goes, usually come to Europe with an honest and reverent desire to learn from the Old World whatever of value it has to teach them, and who are prepared to take an amount of pains in turn ing their trip to good account which is both rare and praiseworthy. For such readers I shall call attention at times to other sources of information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice Its History, Art, Industries and Modern Life At Venice, he who is happy, he for whom silence has no charms and who loves the tumult of the world, soon finds his footsteps dogged by limping dulness. But those who have known the sorrows of life return gladly thither; the place is catch ing - every corner or open square recommends itself to the affections. The lightness of the heavens, the even purity of the air, the steely shine of the lagoon, the roseate reflections of the walls, the nights as clear as day, the softness of the Venetian dialect, the trustfulness and placability of the people, their tolerance for all men's humors, and their gentle intercourse, - out of all these results that unseizable and seductive quality which is indeed Venice, which sings at a man's heart, and so possesses and subdues him that he shall feel far from home whenever he is far from the Piazzetta.
