Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venezuela, Vol. 1 The geological formation of the mountains in Venezuela is, in the main, of granite and gneiss, but in some few localities calcareous rocks are found. In the valleys and plains the soil is covered by detritus carried from the mountains by the rains. Solid granite abounds in the regions east of the great bend of the Orinoco River, where the soil is generally barren. In the mountain ranges of the Orinoco and in those forming the agricultural zone or belt gneiss predominates. The vegetable soil is exceptionally rich in this zone, where it sometimes attains the depth of 2 meters. The Andes range is mainly formed of Plutonic rocks, granite, and gneiss, but frequently large marble beds are found in the mountains. The soil on both sides is of Neptunian origin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Bolivar, Vol. 1 of 2: Or War, Peace, and Adventure in the Republic of Venezuela Venezuela lies so much out of the beaten track of tourist and traveller, that but little is known in Europe of its scenery, its products, or its people. A residence of eighteen months in this picturesque country, full of mineral wealth, and rich in other natural resources, yet almost untrodden by the man of science, may perhaps be considered sufficient apology for this attempt to add to the scanty knowledge we possess of a land bordering on British Guiana, and opposite to Trinidad, and from which, it is more than probable, the meat-supply of our West Indian possessions must, sooner or later, be derived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Service of Three Years During the War-of-Extermination in the Republics of Venezuela and Colombia, Vol. 1 of 2 IN presuming to offer the following volumes to the notice of the public, it is simply ia tended to convey a proper idea of a con ict which, in all the Combined contingencies and horrors of intestine commotion, has seldom been equalled, and never exceeded. The struggle is now over; and it is gratifying to know, that although it has been attended with terrible severity, and its object pur chased dearly, it has been crowned, so far as regards independence of Spain, with the most complete success. The torrents of pa triotic blood which have stained the soil of Colombia have not been shed in vain; Li berty has reared its standard triumphantly and lastingly on the shores of Southern America; and there is now little doubt, if the affairs of the various Republics be conducted with.
