Book excerpt: A few years into the American Civil War, mysterious events began occurring and they caused the North and South to put aside their differences and unite once more to battle the common threat. However, the might of their newly united armies was not enough to combat things that were once thought to be merely myth and they were forced to rely on men and women who had unusual powers and who were just as mysterious as the creatures that they were fighting. These people were viewed as a necessary evil and they came to be called Spellslingers. Most were little better than mercenaries and bounty hunters, but no one could argue with their effectiveness when it came to dealing with things beyond the comprehension of mere mortals. Over two decades after the end of the Civil War, a pair of Slingers named Jacob and Nathaniel Kreed are made unwilling participants in a plot that has the potential to bring about the end of humanity. Together with a mercenary and a female Slinger, and armed with only their weapons and their special abilities, they travel the southern United States and part of Central America in search of answers and a way to save a world filled with people who hate and fear them. They all know that whether they win or lose, nothing will ever be the same.

Book excerpt: "This comprehensive study examines early medieval popular culture as it appears in ecclesiastical and secular law, sermons, penitentials and other pastoral works - a selective, skewed, but still illuminating record of the beliefs and practices of ordinary Christians. Concentrating on the five centuries from c. 500 to c. 1000, Pagan Survivals, Superstitions and Popular Cultures in Early Medieval Pastoral Literature presents the evidence for folk religious beliefs and piety, attitudes to nature and death, festivals, magic, drinking and alimentary customs. As such it provides a precious glimpse of the mutual adaptation of Christianity and traditional cultures at an important period of cultural and religious transition."--BOOK JACKET

Book excerpt: Featuring boardroom intrigue, masquerade balls, gondola chases, street gangs, and shapeshifting mages, Ryan Van Loan's The Justice in Revenge continues the Fall of the Gods series as Buc and Eld turn from pirates to politics and face the deadliest mystery of their career. The island nation of Servenza is a land of flint and steel, sail and gearwork, of gods both Dead and sleeping. It is a society where the wealthy few rule the impoverished many. Determined to change that, former street-rat Buc, along with Eld, the ex-soldier who has been her partner in crime-solving, have claimed seats on the board of the powerful Kanados Trading Company. Buc plans to destroy the nobility from within—which is much harder than she expected. Stymied by boardroom politics and dodging mages at every turn, Buc and Eld find a potential patron in the Doga, ruler of Servenza. The deal: by the night of the Masquerade, unmask whoever has been attempting to assassinate the Doga, thereby earning her support in the halls of power. Blow the deadline and she’ll have them deported to opposite ends of the world. Armed with Eld’s razor-sharp sword and Buc’s even sharper intellect, the dynamic duo hit the streets just as the shadow religious conflict between the Gods begins to break into open warfare. Those closest to Buc and Eld begin turning up with their throats slit amid rumors that a hidden mastermind is behind everything that’s going wrong in Servenza. Facing wrathful gods, hostile nobles, and a secret enemy bent on revenge, Buc and Eld will need every trick in their arsenal to survive. Luckily, extra blades aren’t the only things Buc has hidden up her sleeves. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

What she saw caused her mouth to drop open and both children stared intently at the sign above their heads. The London Underground sign, usually coloured bright blue and red, was now barely recognisable, its blue hues replaced by a bright yellow. The tiling on the walls had also mysteriously changed colour, the blue mosaic squares now showing in bright orange. Evan closed his mouth and turned to face his friend. ‘What’s going on?’ Spectrum Shift is a fast-paced story that is packed full of puzzles and riddles. What has happened to Evan and Louisa? And why did everything change the moment they stepped through the doorway at the station? With mysteries on every page, this science-fiction novel, aimed at 9-16 year olds, is set in a contemporary world where riddles going back over one hundred years play a part in helping the children get home. Journey underground with them and travel from city to city as the mystery unravels and the children begin to learn what has happened. Discover how Latin is linked with the mystery and help Evan and Louisa as they explore the ancient city of St. Albans. The dialogue in Spectrum Shift is carefully targeted to the children’s market and the colourful style is suitable for all. The characters are equally as interesting as the plot, helping to ensure it remains action-packed throughout. Will Foxe solve the riddle, or will Veneficus provide the answer? Find out in Spectrum Shift, the new must-read science-fiction novel. It will be enjoyed especially by Doctor Who fans, which inspired this story. Bel also draws inspiration from Alex Scarrow, author of the ‘Time-Riders’ series.

Book excerpt: The French and English kings are at war, the Viking invaders are still causing mayhem in Wessex, and local warlords battle to gain a foothold in any way they can. Twilight, the now old veneficus of Wessex, finds his replacement in Tara, a curly red-haired little girl from Ireland with special powers. As Twilight trains Tara in the enchantments amidst the conflict and strife, he must also maintain the crucial venefical presence at Stonehenge and Avebury. But while the old veneficus and his young novice attempt to deal with weak monarchs, a flesh-eating sorceress and three deviate and particularly evil Francian venefici, the Duke of Normandy makes his move and invades England. As the flames of conflict engulf the land, the immortal Tara unexpectedly finds romance with a powerful Francian veneficus named Virgile. Together they try and bring peace while Twilight visits Rome, Constantinople and Baghdad in his investigation of the other great Holy War brewing in the East between Saracens and Christians. The epic saga continues as the battle rages on in book three of the Venefical Progressions series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the growing interest in Apuleius’ Apologia or Pro se de magia, a speech he delivered in AD 158/159 to defend himself against the charge of being a magus, the only comprehensive study on this speech and magic to date is that by Adam Abt (1908). The aim of this volume is to shed new light on the extent to which Apuleius’ speech reveals his own knowledge of magic, and on the implications of the dangerous allegations brought against Apuleius. By analysing the Apologia sequentially, the author does not only reassess Abt’s analysis but proposes a new reconstruction of the prosecution’s case, arguing that it is heavily distorted by Apuleius. Since ancient magic is the main topic of this speech, an extensive discussion of the topic is provided, offering a new semantic taxonomy of magus and its cognates. Finally, this volume also explores Apuleius’ forensic techniques and the Platonic ideology underpinning his speech. It is proposed that a Platonising reasoning – distinguishing between higher and lower concepts – lies at the core of Apuleius’ rhetorical strategy, and that Apuleius aims to charm the judge, the audience and, ultimately, his readers with the irresistible power of his arguments.
