Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an experimental investigation into the behavior of an unconfined, steady, fully turbulent, two-phase jet of diameter of 12.7 mm at the exit, with an exit flow velocity of 50 m/s and containing particles with a mass density of loading of 1.5% is described. The second phase consisted of glass beads 80 microns in diameter. Velocity profiles in a plane parallel to the exit of the jet at several downstream stations, as well as the rms values, turbulent intensity and velocity cross correlations were measured for both phases. The radial rms velocities of the particles, although similar to those of the fluid, were found to be surprisingly higher than for a jet of 25.4 mm in diameter with a lower exit velocity. Measurements of the particle velocities were extremely sensitive to changes in the upstream boundary conditions. Keywords: Laser doppler anemometry; Two phase flow. (jhd).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion of Two-Phase Reactive Media addresses the complex phenomena involved in the burning of solid and liquid fuels. In fact, the multiplicity of phenomena characteristic of combustion of two-phase media determine the contents. The three parts deal with: the dynamics of a single particle; combustion wave propagation in two-phase reactive media; and thermal regimes of combustion reactors. The book generalizes the results of numerous investigations into the ignition and combustion of solid particles, droplets and bubbles, combustion wave propagation in heterogeneous reactive media, the stability of combustion of two-phase media, as well as the thermal regimes of high-temperature combustion reactors. It merges findings from the authors’ investigations into problems of two-phase flows and material from graduate-level courses they teach at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of bubbles on a jet issued below and parallel to a free surface are experimentally studied. The jet under study is isothermal and in fresh water, with air injectors that allow variation of the inlet air volume fraction for 0% to 13%. Measurements of the jet exit conditions, water velocity, water entrainment, Reynolds stresses and surface currents have been performed using LDV, PIV and surface PIV. Air volume fraction, bubble velocity, chord length and free surface elevation and RMS have been obtained using local phase detection probes. Visualization was performed using laser-induced fluorescence. Measurements show that water entrainment decreases up to 22% with the presence of bubbles, but surface current strength increases up to 60% with 0.4 l/min of air injection. The mean free surface elevation and turbulent fluctuation significantly increase with the injection of air. The water normal Reynolds stresses are damped by the presence of bubbles in the bulk of the liquid, but very close to the free surface the effect is reversed and the normal Reynolds stresses increase slightly for the bubbly flow. Flow visualizations show that the two-phase jet is lifted with the presence of bubbles and attaches to the free surface sooner. Significant bubble coalescence is observed, leading to an increase of 20% in mean bubble size as the jet develops. The coalescence near the free surface is particularly strong, due to the time it takes the bubbles to pierce the free surface, resulting in a considerable increase in the local air volume fraction.

Book excerpt: A test was conducted to obtain nonintrusive measurements in the flow field about an axisymmetric nozzle afterbody with a cold, underexpanded jet, M sub j=1.563, in a parallel free stream, M sub alpha = 0.6. Reynolds shear stress and two components of mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured using a two-color Bragg-diffracted laser Doppler velocimeter. Additional experimental data include the afterbody surface pressure distribution and laser vapor screen flow visualization of the jet plume. A multiple seeding technique was used to investigate the bimodal velocity probability distributions observed in the jet mixing region. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's first monograph on turbulent jets, in 1936, dealt solely with a free submerged jet. Since that time, the theory of the turbulent jet has been developed in many published works both in the USSR and abroad: it has been enriched with a large amount of experimental material and has been applied in many new fields of engineering. In the last 10 years very substantial progress has been made, and it has now become possible to go beyond the free submerged jet and to solve the problem of a jet in a stream of fluid, to take into account the interaction between the jet and solid walls, to ascertain the relationship between the contour of the jet and the ratio of its density to the density of the surrounding medium, and to establish the characteristic features of a supersonic jet. This monograph contains the results of further research by the author and his colleagues, as well as a critical reappraisal of the more important theoretical and experimental data published by other investigators. The first section deals with the theory of a turbulent jet of incompressible fluid. It gives a systematic analysis of numerous experimental data on velocity profiles, temperature, and the impurity concentration, as well as the outlines of the turbulent mixing lone. The second section sets forth the theory of turbulent gas jets, including strongly preheated and supersonic jets. The theory of free turbulence in a gas, suitable in principle for any degree of compressibility, is revised, and the equations are derived for motion and heat exchange in the boundary layer of a jet at very high temperature. The third section solves several problems of the spreading of jets in finite and semifinite space, and the fourth section describes various applications of the theory of jets, many of which are reported for the first time or have been significantly revised.

Book excerpt: A flat plate and a curved wall surface, intended to model a wing-flap combination in a high V/STOL configuration, were used to measure pressure and flow velocity in a freely expanding coflowing jet and a three dimensional wall jet. The effects of increasing the velocity ratio of the jet exit plane velocity to the free stream velocity were investigated. Velocity measurements were made using a two color laser Doppler velocimeter with a phase-locked loop processor. Fluctuating pressures were monitored with condenser-type microphones. Quantities measured include the width of the mixing region, the mean velocity field, turbulent intensities, and time scales. Wall and static pressure-velocity correlations and coherences are presented. Catalano, G. D. and Morton, J. B. and Humphris, R. R. Unspecified Center NASA-CR-157918 NGR-47-005-219...

Book excerpt: The MIT mission - "to bring together Industry and Academia and to nurture the next generation in computational mechanics is of great importance to reach the new level of mathematical modeling and numerical solution and to provide an exciting research environment for the next generation in computational mechanics." Mathematical modeling and numerical solution is today firmly established in science and engineering. Research conducted in almost all branches of scientific investigations and the design of systems in practically all disciplines of engineering can not be pursued effectively without, frequently, intensive analysis based on numerical computations. The world we live in has been classified by the human mind, for descriptive and analysis purposes, to consist of fluids and solids, continua and molecules; and the analyses of fluids and solids at the continuum and molecular scales have traditionally been pursued separately. Fundamentally, however, there are only molecules and particles for any material that interact on the microscopic and macroscopic scales. Therefore, to unify the analysis of physical systems and to reach a deeper understanding of the behavior of nature in scientific investigations, and of the behavior of designs in engineering endeavors, a new level of analysis is necessary. This new level of mathematical modeling and numerical solution does not merely involve the analysis of a single medium but must encompass the solution of multi-physics problems involving fluids, solids, and their interactions, involving multi-scale phenomena from the molecular to the macroscopic scales, and must include uncertainties in the given data and the solution results. Nature does not distinguish between fluids and solids and does not ever repeat itself exactly. This new level of analysis must also include, in engineering, the effective optimization of systems, and the modeling and analysis of complete life spans of engineering products, from design to fabrication, to possibly multiple repairs, to end of service.
