Book excerpt: The goal of the study was to accurately map and classify at least to the alliance level of the USNVC, the vegetation in Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Booker T. Washington National Monument, Colonial National Historical Park, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, George Washington Birthplace National Monument, Petersburg National Battlefield, and Richmond National Battlefield Park. The classification used to map these parks was developed regionally, using quantitative data that was collected from all seven park units and combined with existing data from throughout the Mid-Atlantic Piedmont and Coastal Plain.

Book excerpt: Vegetation classification and mapping of U.S. National Vegetation Classification associations were conducted at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, creating current digital geospatial databases for the park. This study of the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site identified and characterized 10 U.S. National Vegetation Classification associations in detail. The diversity and distribution of vegetation associations is primarily a result of the following four factors: 1) the geologic history of the region, especially the effect of glaciation; 2) the park's position on the northeastern U.S. coastal plain within a temperate climate; 3) proximity to Long Island Sound and maritime ecological processes, such as diurnal tides, storm overwash, salt spray, and high winds; and 4) the park's setting within a suburban landscape with a moderately intensive human land use history, along with its associated problems, such as invasive species, fragmentation, habitat loss, and pollution.

Book excerpt: San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (SAAN) encompasses approximately 844 acres in the city of San Antonio and rural Wilson County, Texas. The park preserves and celebrates the largest collection of Spanish colonial resources in the U.S., including four missions, two acequias (irrigation ditches), and one ranch remnant. The four missions are located in the southern portion of San Antonio along the San Antonio River and the ranch site is located approximately 5 miles southwest of Floresville, Texas and 35 miles southeast of San Antonio. SAAN was created to protect and commemorate these historical structures and in addition it also contains rich and varied natural resources including native flora common to the Tamaulipan thornscrub and southern tallgrass prairie ecoregions. To better understand the distribution of these plant assemblages the National Park Service's (NPS) Southern Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (SOPN) in conjunction with the NPS's Gulf Coast Inventory and Monitoring Network (GULN) begun a vegetation mapping and classification effort at SAAN.

Analysis of the classification plot data revealed 18 National Vegetaition Classification (NVC) plant associations or park special vegetation types within GOSP. Several additional plant associations for which map units were developed were not sampled with classification plots, but were instead documented by extensive field notes and photographs" -- p. xiii.

Book excerpt: A three-year program was initiated to complete the task of mapping and classifying the vegetation at TAPR. The Kansas Biological Survey (KBS) in conjunction with NatureServe developed a vegetation classification using the National Vegetation Classification System and produced a digital vegetation map. To classify the vegetation, plots located throughout TAPR were sampled during the summer of 2008. Additional data were obtained from vegetation plots sampled by the Inventory & Monitoring program in 2006. Analysis of the plot data by KBS produced 12 map units (eight vegetated and four land-use) which are directly matched to corresponding plant associations and land-use classes. Descriptions and a field key for all plant communities of TAPR are included in this report. Draft maps were printed, field tested, reviewed and revised.

Book excerpt: Vegetation classification and mapping was conducted at Weir Farm National Historic Site during the fall of 2003 and the summers of 2004 and 2005, creating a current digital geospatial vegetation database for the park. There are nine natural vegetation types that occur in the park; four upland forest types, one upland non-vascular type, two forested wetland types, and two wetland shrub thicket types that reflected the soil moisture conditions of the site. In addition, four anthropogenic vegetation types occurred; one successional forest and three non-forested types (two in mowed upland fields, and one herbaceous wetland seep). Each of these is described in detail in this report.

Fifty vegetation associations and 14 Anderson Level II land use categories that occur within the park were identified and described in detail. Two communities found within the park, Sparsely Vegetated Cliff and Southern New England Bog, could not be mapped but are included in the descriptions. Many of the vegetation types are strongly influenced by the varied environmental settings and land use history of the park.

Book excerpt: The objective of the National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Inventory is to classify vegetation as ecological community types in each of more than 250 NPS Inventory and Monitoring park units ("parks") in the United States outside of Alaska and to map vegetation to that classification scheme developed for the unit. This guidance is a revision and update of the 1994 guidance on vegetation classification within the NPS Vegetation Inventory (The Nature Conservancy and Environmental Systems Research Institute 1994) and supersedes the 1994 version.
