Book excerpt: Ethel Mary Partridge, Ethel Mary Mairet RDI, or Ethel Mary Coomaraswamy (17 February 1872 - 18 November 1952) was a British hand loom weaver, significant in the development of the craft during the first half of the twentieth century. She met the famed art historian and philosopher Ananda Coomaraswamy. The couple married on 19 June 1902 and travelled to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), where he conducted a mineral survey. The couple recorded the arts and crafts of each village, and Mairet kept meticulous journals, photographing each craft she observed. They returned to England in 1907 and published their investigations into Ceylon crafts.

Book excerpt: "We fear bright colour because our modern colours are bad, and they are bad because the tradition of dyeing has been broken. The chemist has invaded the domain of the dyer, driven him out and taken over his business, with the result that ugly colour has become the rule for the first time in the history of mankind. It is not that chemists never produce beautiful colour. Dyeing as a chemical science has not been studied for the last fifty years without producing good results. But there is this difference between the chemical commercial dyes and the traditional dyes - that with commercial dyes it is very easy to produce ugly colours, the beautiful colour is rare; but with the traditional dyes it is difficult to make an ugly colour, and good colour is the ruleā€¦.This book is intended for the use of craftsmen and others who are trying to dye their materials by hand and on a small scale. Information and recipes, useful to such workers, are to be found in books and pamphlets dating onwards from the 17th century, and in this book I have drawn largely upon these sources of dyeing knowledge, as well as upon the traditions still followed by present workers, and upon the experience of my own work." -Ethel M. Mairet Short, to the point, chock full of practical 'how to' information, Ethel M. Mairet's classic Vegetable Dyes: A Book of Recipes and Information Useful to the Dyer, originally published in 1916, is guaranteed to be your favorite single-source natural dyeing handbook. This book was released on 2005-10-04 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural dyes are dyes or colorants derived from plants, invertebrates, or minerals. The majority of natural dyes are vegetable dyes from plant sources. Dyeing is the process of imparting colors to a textile material. Different classes of dyes are used for different types of fiber and at different stages of the textile production process, from loose fibers through yarn and cloth to completed garments. There are technologies that manufacture the pigments for plastics, rubber and cosmetics. Therefore; dyes and pigments have a vast area of applications and have a huge demand in industry. Contrary to popular opinion, natural dyes are often neither safer nor more ecologically sound than synthetic dyes. They are less permanent, more difficult to apply, wash out more easily, and often involve the use of highly toxic mordant. Of course, the colour possibilities are far more limited; the color of any natural dye may be easily copied by mixing synthetic dyes, but many other colors are not easily obtained with natural dyes. However, some mordant are not very toxic, and the idea of natural dyestuffs is aesthetically pleasing. Applying natural dyes in your fabric production using enzymes will reduce your production cost and improve control. There are various kind of natural dyes; quinonoid dyes, cyanine dyes, azo dyes, biflvonyl dyes, omochromes, anthraquinone, coprosma gesus etc. The use of natural dyes in cloth making can be seen as a necessary luxury to trigger off a change in habits. Dyes which stand out for their beauty and ecological attributes would never be employed on just any material but on noble fabrics such as wool, silk, linen or cotton, made to last more than one season. Market value will benefit from consumer preferences for environmentally friendly products, which will support consumption of high performance dyes and organic pigments. This book basically deals with the use of carotenoids as food colours , bianthraquinones and related compounds, intermediate degradation products of biflavonyls, dyestuffs containing nuclear sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups, quinonoid dyes, cyanine dyes, optical whitening agents, natural dyes for food, stability of natural colourants in foods effect of additives, pyrimidine pigments, the total synthesis of the polyene pigments, red pigment from geniposidic acid and amino compound, effect of acid and amine on the formation of red pigment from geniposidic acid, effect of the substituted position of amino group and chain length of amino compound etc. Due to pollution problems in synthetic dyes and pigments industry, the whole world is shifting towards the manufacturing of natural dyes and pigments. The present book contains techniques of producing different natural dyes and pigments, which has huge demand in domestic as well as in foreign market. It is hoped that entrepreneurs, technocrats, existing units, institutional libraries will find this book very useful. Book excerpt: Ethel Mary Coomaraswamy, nee Partridge, later Mrs. Mairet (1872-1952), was a British author, photographer and weaver. Born in Devon, she became an Associate of the Royal College of Music and worked as a governess before marrying Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy, an Indian metaphysician, historian and philosopher of Indian art, in 1902. She travelled with him to Ceylon, and while there, the couple collaborated on Mediaeval Sinhalese Art, Coomaraswamy wrote the text and Ethel provided the photographs. It was a groundbreaking study of Sri Lankan craft and culture. The spirit presiding over much of the early activity of Ananda and Ethel was William Morris, the English craftsman and author, who initiated the handcraft revival in the later 19th century as a response to mass-produced industrial manufacture. Partridge and Coomaraswamy divorced after a few years and she returned to England, where she later married the writer Philip Mairet and, as Ethel Mariet, became well known as a weaver and advocate of hand craft. Her works include: A Book on Vegetable Dyes (1916), Vegetable Dyes (1924), Hand-Weaving Today: Traditions and Changes (1939), Hand-Weaving and Education (1940) and Hand-Weaving Notes for Teachers (1948).

Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work.
