Book excerpt: Failures in business and marriage tip poor Mooney into a spell in a psychiatric ward. But he has the great fortune of befriending an Indian seer, one of his pals from the casino where Mooney hangs out, who promises to put Mooney's life back together. Dennis is no ordinary Indian seer. For one thing, he's a rez Indian, from right around Winnipeg, just like Mooney. For another, he's a stock picker, and what he sees coming, in the spring of 2008, is the sub–prime mortgage meltdown. So he puts together a consortium of himself, Mooney, and a bunch of Mooney's pals from the world of North End Winnipeg, to pool their savings in a short–selling scheme to cash in on the coming crash. But the so–called "Eisenteeth syndicate" isn't just betting against the market. Mooney and his pals are betting against Mooney's brother Dave: crude, ignorant, maddeningly successful, whose oafish touch turns every business venture into gold. Did we mention their mother has something to say about all this? Like Michael Tregebov's debut novel The Briss, which was a finalist for the Commonwealth First Novel Award (Canada–Caribbean Region), The Shiva is a fast-paced character-driven novel.

Set on the borderline of reality and delirium, and featuring such charismatic icons as Eva Peron and Greta Garbo, they are imbued with Copi's trademark racy wit and manic pace, intended at once to shock the bien-pensant and to open up radically new insights. The product of one of the most talked-about dramatists in the French language since Arrabal and the advent of the theatre of panic, Copi's works continue to shock and challenge all they come into contact with.

Book excerpt: Tammy Meyers was shot to death in front of her home in a quiet Las Vegas neighborhood in what was originally thought to be a case of road rage. In many ways her husband Bob Meyers and their four children would suffer the loss of Tammy twice. The first time it came at the hands of a neighborhood misfit, Erich Nowsch, who later confessed to police to the shooting. The second time it was in the unrelenting flood of misinformed opinions and supposition of a handful of reporters and social media malcontents. The posts in the newspapers comments section didn't mean much in the broader context. Only a tiny fraction of readers of major newspapers read the comments section following the main story. The same people tend to post over and over again, whether it's about the police or a restaurant review. It's what some people do. Posts are typically misspelled and wildly inaccurate but in this context, for the Meyers family who had just lost their mother, the posts and the mass media coverage had the devastating effect of a sniper's bullet. Tammy was a murder victim and now it was as if she was being murdered all over again. The shooting occurred on the night of Feb. 12, 2015, but it would be months before Bob Meyers could bring himself to bury his wife. He explained to his children that he "refused to hold a funeral listening to a eulogy while a cloud remained over his wife's reputation." The truth was Tammy was an amazing, caring person who always took time for friends, no matter the hour. She had dozens of kids in the neighborhood who called her mom. At holiday dinners Tammy filled the Meyers home with kids who called themselves "orphans" - their parents were either estranged from them, working or just couldn't be bothered to go through the machinations of making a holiday meal. Young women, often depressed and battling life's problems, would find themselves alone and struggling to cope, yet they knew they could reach out to Tammy no matter what time of the day or night. She reached out to veterans, police officers, and homeless people. This is the woman whose reputation was trampled by the Las Vegas community she had called home for more than 10 years. They blamed Tammy for her own death. The rumors, the all-knowing "word on the street" motivations for the killing would be laughable if not for the context - supposedly "drug related," outrageous false accusations of an illicit affair with the 5-foot-3 killer. As police advanced their investigation and additional facts emerged, it became clear that what was originally termed road rage was actually a case of mistaken identity. Tammy Meyers' murder was actually committed by a lost young man she had tried to help, someone she had invited into her home to have dinner with her family. Her killer, the diminutive Erich Nowsch, would later confess to police and his own mother that he "didn't know he was killing a great mother, a great person" - he thought he was killing a rival gang member. He told police he thought he was killing "a kid." When you get right down to it, Tammy Meyers was murdered by Erich Nowsch for no reason at all.Yet in a city that is infamous for its share of high-profile killers, serial murderers, mobsters, and street thugs, Las Vegas held out its worst public ridicule and turned on a murder victim, a mother of four. Spurred on by the confessed killer's lawyers, one social media genius posted, "Bitch deserved it." Deserved what? Deserved to have her sons and daughter grow up without her loving guidance? Deserved to leave her husband of nearly 25 years without a loving partner? Deserved to be the source of anguish for hundreds, literally hundreds, of friends who would mourn her memory for the rest of their lives? No one, least of all Tammy Meyers deserved that.

Book excerpt: Culled from a wide variety of references, Detroit in Its World Setting is a timeline that offers readers a new appreciation of Michigan history by setting life in the Motor City in the context of world affairs. For each year, readers can follow the march of time in four categories-city and state events, national and world history, cultural progress, and scientific and commercial progress-that cover countless events over the three centuries since the city's founding as well as the people involved in them. Originally published in 1953, Detroit in Its World Setting has been revised and updated to mark the city's 300th birthday in 2001. Expanded coverage includes such subjects as women's achievements, the African American community, ethnic communities, city landmarks, and public education. No other book offers the opportunity to see the city's life in this sweeping context. As entertaining as it is informative, Detroit in Its World Setting is a fitting birthday present for the city-and its citizens.
