Book excerpt: Chris D'Errico's collection of poetry Vegas Implosions is an examination of the sordid city of sin from this Massachusetts born poet. Now in this new expanded edition that includes the 'script The Exterminator Chronicles, D'Errico has broken down and recreated a new volume that is a macro and micro cosm of sin city itself, both as a citizen and as an exterminator. D'Errico's unique visual/graphic poetry, intermixed with his snapshot/sketch type style plays a role as anew generation of beat-flavored poetry captures the Vegas landscape. Vegas Implosions was originally published as a saddle stitch chapbook by Virgogray Press in 2008. This edition contains new poems, as well as revised though remains true to the original vibe of the first edition chapbook. Be on the look out for Ministry of Kybosh, also by Chris D'Errico, soon from Virgogray Press.
Book Synopsis The Implosion of Las Vegas Entertainers by : L. S. Baker
Download or read book The Implosion of Las Vegas Entertainers written by L. S. Baker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-05-08 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you visit Las Vegas, you expect to get the best entertainment in the world. Well, why not. You are in "The Entertainment Capitol of The World." Well, do I have news for you! Las Vegas casinos not only want to take your cash, they are also ripping you off when it comes to music entertainment. This town has more corn in it than Iowa. Could you please pass the salt and butter? You will understand the meaning of this joke as you continue reading. In the good old days, Vegas entertainment was at its best. Who can forget the indelible Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack? The majestic King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley crowned the viva into "Viva Las Vegas." Today, we still have the impressionable Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton. Back in the old days, Entertainment Directors were privy to good music. The Entertainment Directors today, for lack of better words, are incompetent. They have zero knowledge of the entertainment business. Most of these people are in charge of the Food and Beverage Department of the casinos. How in the heck can they distinguish a "bottle of beer" from a great "entertainment act"? Entertainment Directors have a business scam of accepting kick back money. The stone cold truth of Las Vegas is politics and money. Forget sleeping with the right person to get a job. It is not applicable in this city. It's all about kissing ass and "SHOW ME THE MONEY!" So who finds the entertainment acts that are in casino lounges? We can thank those wonderful people who call themselves "agents." I call a majority of them thieves. They are in the same category as used car salespersons. They sell lemons. They are laughing all the way to the bank. This is when the amusement park fun begins for me. Bette Davis once recited in a movie, "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride." You might think I am vindictive and bitter towards agents and entertainment directors. I have been a victim of these vultures along with many other musicians. It is an insult to my musical intelligence. Unfortunately, I can not reveal names of casinos, Entertainment Directors, agents, sex and ethnicity of musicians. I do not want to end up in a court of law down the road. I will get satisfaction exposing their scams. It's a dirty job, but someone has to clean the scum off the toilet.

Book Synopsis Morta Las Vegas by : Nathaniel Lewis
Download or read book Morta Las Vegas written by Nathaniel Lewis and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through all its transformations and reinventions over the past century, "Sin City" has consistently been regarded by artists and cultural critics as expressing in purest form, for better or worse, an aesthetic and social order spawned by neon signs and institutionalized indulgence. In other words, Las Vegas provides a codex with which to confront the problems of the West and to track the people, materials, ideas, and virtual images that constitute postregional space. Morta Las Vegas considers Las Vegas and the problem of regional identity in the American West through a case study of a single episode of the television crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Delving deep into the interwoven events of the episode titled "4 × 4," but resisting a linear, logical case-study approach, the authors draw connections between the city--a layered and complex world--and the violent, uncanny mysteries of a crime scene. Morta Las Vegas reveals nuanced issues characterizing the emergence of a postregional West, moving back and forth between a geographical and a procedural site and into a place both in between and beyond Western identity.

Book Synopsis Architectural Agents by : Annabel Jane Wharton
Download or read book Architectural Agents written by Annabel Jane Wharton and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buildings are not benign; rather, they commonly manipulate and abuse their human users. Architectural Agents makes the case that buildings act in the world independently of their makers, patrons, owners, or occupants. And often they act badly. Treating buildings as bodies, Annabel Jane Wharton writes biographies of symptomatic structures in order to diagnose their pathologies. The violence of some sites is rooted in historical trauma; the unhealthy spatial behaviors of other spaces stem from political and economic ruthlessness. The places examined range from the Cloisters Museum in New York City and the Palestine Archaeological Museum (renamed the Rockefeller Museum) in Jerusalem to the grand Hostal de los Reyes Católicos in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and Las Vegas casino resorts. Recognizing that a study of pathological spaces would not be complete without an investigation of digital structures, Wharton integrates into her argument an original consideration of the powerful architectures of video games and immersive worlds. Her work mounts a persuasive critique of popular phenomenological treatments of architecture. Architectural Agents advances an alternative theorization of buildings’ agency—one rooted in buildings’ essential materiality and historical formation—as the basis for her significant intervention in current debates over the boundaries separating humans, animals, and machines.

A certain fact is David S. Pointer is going places, whether here or there, in name or body, and we are pleased to share this brief glimpse into the greater garden hidden behind the gates of his mind.
Book Synopsis Reno's Big Gamble by : Alicia Barber
Download or read book Reno's Big Gamble written by Alicia Barber and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Pittsburgh socialite Laura Corey rolled into Reno, Nevada, in 1905 for a six-month stay, her goal was a divorce from the president of U.S. Steel. Her visit also provided a provocative glimpse into the city's future. With its rugged landscape and rough-edged culture, Reno had little to offer early twentieth-century visitors besides the gambling and prostitution that had remained unregulated since Nevada's silver-mining heyday. But the possibility of easy divorce attracted national media attention, East Coast notables, and Hollywood stars, and soon the "Reno Cure" was all the rage. Almost overnight, Reno was on the map. Alicia Barber traces the transformation of Reno's reputation from backward railroad town to the nationally known "Sin Central"—as Garrison Keillor observed, a place where you could see things that you wouldn't want to see in your own hometown. Chronicling the city's changing fortunes from the days of the Comstock Lode, she describes how city leaders came to embrace an identity as "The Biggest Little City in the World" and transform their town into a lively tourist mecca. Focusing on the evolution of urban reputation, Barber carefully distinguishes between the image that a city's promoters hope to manufacture and the impression that outsiders actually have. Interweaving aspects of urban identity, she shows how sense of place, promoted image, and civic reputation intermingled and influenced each other—and how they in turn shaped the urban environment. Quickie divorces notwithstanding, Reno's primary growth engine was gambling; modern casinos came to dominate the downtown landscape. When mainstream America balked, Reno countered by advertising "tax freedom" and natural splendor to attract new residents. But by the mid-seventies, unchecked growth and competition from Las Vegas had initiated a downslide that persisted until a carefully crafted series of special events and the rise of recreational tourism began to attract new breeds of tourists. Barber's engaging story portrays Reno as more than a second-string Las Vegas, having pioneered most of the attractions-gaming and prizefighting, divorces and weddings-that made the larger city famous. As Reno continues to remold itself to weather the shifting winds of tourism and growth, Barber's book provides a cautionary tale for other cities hoping to ride the latest consumer trends.
Download or read book The Strip written by Stefan Al and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformations of the Strip—from the fake Wild West to neon signs twenty stories high to “starchitecture”—and how they mirror America itself. The Las Vegas Strip has impersonated the Wild West, with saloon doors and wagon wheels; it has decked itself out in midcentury modern sleekness. It has illuminated itself with twenty-story-high neon signs, then junked them. After that came Disney-like theme parks featuring castles and pirates, followed by replicas of Venetian canals, New York skyscrapers, and the Eiffel Tower. (It might be noted that forty-two million people visited Las Vegas in 2015—ten million more than visited the real Paris.) More recently, the Strip decided to get classy, with casinos designed by famous architects and zillion-dollar collections of art. Las Vegas became the “implosion capital of the world” as developers, driven by competition, got rid of the old to make way for the new—offering a non-metaphorical definition of “creative destruction.” In The Strip, Stefan Al examines the many transformations of the Las Vegas Strip, arguing that they mirror transformations in America itself. The Strip is not, as popularly supposed, a display of architectural freaks but representative of architectural trends and a record of social, cultural, and economic change. Al tells two parallel stories. He describes the feverish competition of Las Vegas developers to build the snazziest, most tourist-grabbing casinos and resorts—with a cast of characters including the mobster Bugsy Siegel, the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, and the would-be political kingmaker Sheldon Adelson. And he views the Strip in a larger social context, showing that it has not only reflected trends but also magnified them and sometimes even initiated them. Generously illustrated with stunning color images throughout, The Strip traces the many metamorphoses of a city that offers a vivid projection of the American dream.

Book Synopsis Sun, Sin & Suburbia by : Geoff Schumacher
Download or read book Sun, Sin & Suburbia written by Geoff Schumacher and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than forty million visitors per year travel to Sin City to visit the gambling mecca of the world. But gambling is only one part of the city’s story. In this carefully documented history, Geoff Schumacher tracks the rise of Las Vegas, including its vital role during World War II; the rise of the Strip in the 1950s; the explosive growth of the 1990s; and the colossal collapse triggered by the real estate bust and economic crisis of the mid-2000s. Schumacher surveys the history of the iconic casinos, debunking myths and highlighting key players such as Howard Hughes, Kirk Kerkorian, and Steve Wynn. Schumacher’s history also profiles the Las Vegas where more than two million people live. He explores the neighborhoods sprawling beyond the Strip’s neon gleam and uncovers a diverse community offering much more than table games, lounge acts, and organized crime. Schumacher discusses contemporary Las Vegas, charting its course from the nation’s fastest-growing metropolis to one of the Great Recession’s most battered victims. Sun, Sin & Suburbia will appeal to tourists looking to understand more than the glitz and glitter of Las Vegas and to newcomers who want to learn about their new hometown. It will also be an essential addition to any longtime Nevadan’s library of local history. First published in 2012 by Stephens Press, this paperback edition is now available from the University of Nevada Press.
Book Synopsis Against Architecture by : Franco La Cecla
Download or read book Against Architecture written by Franco La Cecla and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2008, (as Contro l’architettura), Against Architecture has been translated into French and Greek, with editions forthcoming in Polish and Portuguese. The book is a passionate and erudite charge against the celebrities of the current architectural world, the “archistars.” According to Franco La Cecla, architecture has lost its way and its true function, as the archistars use the cityscape to build their brand, putting their stamp on the built environment with no regard for the public good. More than a diatribe against the trade for which he trained, Franco La Cecla issues a call to rethink urban space, to take our cities back from what he calls Casino Capitalism, which has left a string of failed urban projects, from the Sagrera of Barcelona to the expansion of Columbia University in New York City. He finds hope and some surprising answers in the 2006 uprisings in the Parisian suburbs and in wandering the streets of San Francisco. La Cecla recounts his peregrinations, whether as a consultant to urban planners or as an incorrigible flaneur, all the while giving insights into how we might find a way to resist the tyranny of the planners and find the spirit of place. As he comments throughout on the works of past and present masters of urban and landscape writing, including Robert Byron, Mike Davis, and Rebecca Solnit, Franco La Cecla has given us a book that will take an important place in our public discourse.
