Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes for the first time in monograph form important applications in numerical methods of linear algebra. The author presents new material and extended results from recent papers in a very readable style. The main goal of the book is to study the behavior of the resolvent of a matrix under the perturbation by low rank matrices. Whereas the eigenvalues (the poles of the resolvent) and the pseudospectra (the sets where the resolvent takes large values) can move dramatically under such perturbations, the growth of the resolvent as a matrix-valued meromorphic function remains essentially unchanged. This has practical implications to the analysis of iterative solvers for large systems of linear algebraic equations. First, the book introduces the basics of value distribution theory of meromorphic scalar functions. It then introduces a new nonlinear tool for linear algebra, the total logarithmic size of a matrix, which allows for a nontrivial generalization of Rolf Nevanlinna's characteristic function from the scalar theory to matrix- and operator-valued functions. In particular, the theory of perturbations by low rank matrices becomes possible. As an example, if the spectrum of a normal matrix collapses under a low rank perturbation, there is always a compensation in terms of the loss of orthogonality of the eigenvectors. This qualitative phenomenon is made quantitative by using the new tool. Applications are given to rational approximation, to the Kreiss matrix theorem, and to convergence of Krylov solvers. The book is intended for researchers in mathematics in general and especially for those working in numerical linear algebra. Much of the book is understandable if the reader has a good background in linear algebra and a first course in complex analysis.

Let f: M - N be a merom orphic map between complex manifolds. A target family CI ~ (Ea1aEA of analytic subsets Ea of N is given where A is a connected. compact complex manifold. The behavior of the inverse 1 family ["'(CI) = (f- {E )laEA is investigated. A substantial theory has been a created by many contributors. Usually the targets Ea stay fixed. However we can consider a finite set IJ of meromorphic maps g : M - A and study the incidence f{z) E Eg(z) for z E M and some g E IJ. Here we investigate this situation: M is a parabolic manifold of dimension m and N = lP n is the n-dimensional projective space. The family of hyperplanes in lP n is the target family parameterized by the dual projective space lP* We obtain a Nevanlinna theory consisting of several n First Main Theorems. Second Main Theorems and Defect Relations and extend recent work by B. Shiffman and by S. Mori. We use the Ahlfors-Weyl theory modified by the curvature method of Cowen and Griffiths. The Introduction consists of two parts. In Part A. we sketch the theory for fixed targets to provide background for those who are familar with complex analysis but are not acquainted with value distribution theory.

Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 30 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive account of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory and its relations with Diophantine approximation theory for graduate students and interested researchers. This book with nine chapters systematically describes Nevanlinna theory of meromorphic maps between algebraic varieties or complex spaces, building up from the classical theory of meromorphic functions on the complex plane with full proofs in Chap. 1 to the current state of research. Chapter 2 presents the First Main Theorem for coherent ideal sheaves in a very general form. With the preparation of plurisubharmonic functions, how the theory to be generalized in a higher dimension is described. In Chap. 3 the Second Main Theorem for differentiably non-degenerate meromorphic maps by Griffiths and others is proved as a prototype of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory. Establishing such a Second Main Theorem for entire curves in general complex algebraic varieties is a wide-open problem. In Chap. 4, the Cartan-Nochka Second Main Theorem in the linear projective case and the Logarithmic Bloch-Ochiai Theorem in the case of general algebraic varieties are proved. Then the theory of entire curves in semi-abelian varieties, including the Second Main Theorem of Noguchi-Winkelmann-Yamanoi, is dealt with in full details in Chap. 6. For that purpose Chap. 5 is devoted to the notion of semi-abelian varieties. The result leads to a number of applications. With these results, the Kobayashi hyperbolicity problems are discussed in Chap. 7. In the last two chapters Diophantine approximation theory is dealt with from the viewpoint of higher dimensional Nevanlinna theory, and the Lang-Vojta conjecture is confirmed in some cases. In Chap. 8 the theory over function fields is discussed. Finally, in Chap. 9, the theorems of Roth, Schmidt, Faltings, and Vojta over number fields are presented and formulated in view of Nevanlinna theory with results motivated by those in Chaps. 4, 6, and 7.

This theory is one of the fundamental tools employed in modern physics, the spectral theory of operators, approximation of analytic operators, analytic mappings between vectors, and vector-valued functions of several variables. The book contains three chapters devoted to the theory of normal functions, Hp-space, and vector-valued functions and their applications. Among the topics dealt with are the properties of complex functions in a complex plane and infinite-dimensional spaces, and the solution of vector-valued integral equations and boundary value problems by complex analysis and functional analysis, which involve methods which can be applied to problems in operations research and control theory. Much original research is included. This volume will be of interest to those whose work involves complex analysis and control theory, and can be recommended as a graduate text in these areas.

Book excerpt: This book describes the theories and developments in Nevanlinna theory and Diophantine approximation. Although these two subjects belong to the different areas: one in complex analysis and one in number theory, it has been discovered that a number of striking similarities exist between these two subjects. A growing understanding of these connections has led to significant advances in both fields. Outstanding conjectures from decades ago are being solved.Over the past 20 years since the first edition appeared, there have been many new and significant developments. The new edition greatly expands the materials. In addition, three new chapters were added. In particular, the theory of algebraic curves, as well as the algebraic hyperbolicity, which provided the motivation for the Nevanlinna theory.

Computer methods in Applied Mathematics, too, are often based on statements and procedures of Mathematical Analysis. An important part of Mathematical Analysis is Complex Analysis because it has many applications in various branches of Mathematics. Since the field of Complex Analysis and its applications is a focal point in the Vietnamese research programme, the Hanoi University of Technology organized an International Conference on Finite or Infinite Dimensional Complex Analysis and Applications which took place in Hanoi from August 8 - 12, 2001. This conference th was the 9 one in a series of conferences which take place alternately in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam each year. The first one took place th at Pusan University in Korea in 1993. The preceding 8 conference was th held in Shandong in China in August 2000. The 9 conference of the was the first one which took place above mentioned series of conferences in Vietnam. Present trends in Complex Analysis reflected in the present volume are mainly concentrated in the following four research directions: 1 Value distribution theory (including meromorphic funtions, mero morphic mappings, as well as p-adic functions over fields of finite or zero characteristic) and its applications, 2 Holomorphic functions in several (finitely or infinitely many) com plex variables, 3 Clifford Analysis, i.e., complex methods in higher-dimensional real Euclidian spaces, 4 Generalized analytic functions.
