Book excerpt: Since this Introduction to Vector Analysis and Quaternions was first published in 1896, the study of the subject has become much more general; and whereas some reviewers then regarded the analysis as a luxury, it is now recognized as a necessity for the exact student of physics or engineering. In America, Professor Hathaway has published a Primer of Quaternions (New York, 1896), and Dr. Wilson has amplified and extended Professor Gibbs' lectures on vector analysis into a text-book for the use of students of mathematics and physics (New York, 1901). In Great Britain, Professor Henrici and Mr. Turner have published a manual for students entitled Vectors and Rotors (London, 1903); Dr. Knott has prepared a new edition of Kelland and Tait's Introduction to Quaternions (London, 1904); and Professor Joly has realized Hamilton's idea of a Manual ofQuaternions (London, 1905). In Germany Dr. Bucherer has published Elemente der Vektoranalysis (Leipzig, 1903) which has now reached a second edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vector Analysis and Quaternions The volume called Higher Mathematics, the first edition of which was published in 1896, contained eleven chapters by eleven authors, each chapter being independent of the others, but all supposing the reader to have at least a mathematical training equivalent to that given in classical and engineering colleges. The publication of that volume is now discontinued and the chapters are issued in separate form. In these reissues it will generally be found that the monographs are enlarged by additional articles or appendices which either amplify the former presentation or record recent advances. This plan of publication has been arranged in order to meet the demand of teachers and the convenience of classes, but it is also thought that it may prove advantageous to readers in special lines of mathematical literature. It is the intention of the publishers and editors to add other monographs to the series from time to time, if the call for the same seems to warrant it. Among the topics which are under consideration are those of elliptic functions, the theory of numbers, the group theory, the calculus of variations, and non-Euclidean geometry; possibly also monographs on branches of astronomy, mechanics, and mathematical physics may be included. It is the hope of the editors that this form of publication may tend to promote mathematical study and research over a wider field than that which the former volume has occupied. Book Synopsis Vector Analysis for Mathematicians, Scientists and Engineers by : S. Simons
Download or read book Vector Analysis for Mathematicians, Scientists and Engineers written by S. Simons and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vector Analysis for Mathematicians, Scientists and Engineers, Second Edition, provides an understanding of the methods of vector algebra and calculus to the extent that the student will readily follow those works which make use of them, and further, will be able to employ them himself in his own branch of science. New concepts and methods introduced are illustrated by examples drawn from fields with which the student is familiar, and a large number of both worked and unworked exercises are provided. The book begins with an introduction to vectors, covering their representation, addition, geometrical applications, and components. Separate chapters discuss the products of vectors; the products of three or four vectors; the differentiation of vectors; gradient, divergence, and curl; line, surface, and volume integrals; theorems of vector integration; and orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The final chapter presents an application of vector analysis. Answers to odd-numbered exercises are provided as the end of the book.

Book Synopsis Vector Analysis by : Edwin Bidwell Wilson
Download or read book Vector Analysis written by Edwin Bidwell Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vector Analysis: A Text-Book for the Use of Students of Mathematics and Physics When I undertook to adapt the lectures of Professor Gibbs on Vector Analysis for publication in the Yale Bicentennial Series, Professor Gibbs himself was already so fully engaged upon his work to appear in the same series, Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics, that it was understood no material assistance in the composition of this book could be expected from him. For this reason he wished me to feel entirely free to use my own discretion alike in the selection of the topics to be treated and in the mode of treatment. It has been my endeavor to use the freedom thus granted only in so far as was necessary for presenting his method in text-book form. By far the greater part of the material used in the following pages has been taken from the course of lectures on Vector Analysis delivered annually at the University by Professor Gibbs. Some use, however, has been made of the chapters on Vector Analysis in Mr. Oliver Heaviside's Electromagnetic Theory (Electrician Series, 1893) and in Professor Föppl's lectures on Die Maxwell'sche Theorie der Electricitāt (Teubner, 1894). My previous study of Quaternions has also been of great assistance. The material thus obtained has been arranged in the way which seems best suited to easy mastery of the subject. Those Arts, which it seemed best to incorporate in the text but which for various reasons may well be omitted at the first reading have been marked with an asterisk (*). Numerous illustrative examples have been drawn from geometry, mechanics, and physics. Indeed, a large part of the text has to do with applications of the method.
