Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, innovative approach to the work of Fluxus artist George Maciunas. Though widely recognized as the founder of the legendary Fluxus movement, George Maciunas has long been a puzzling figure in the history of twentieth-century art. Many have questioned whether he should be considered an artist at all. In Fluxus Administration, critic and art historian Colby Chamberlain reveals the consistent artistic practice hidden behind Maciunas’s varied work in architecture, music, performance, publication, graphic design, film, and real estate as an attempt to create models for community through structures of bureaucracy. In this deeply researched study, Chamberlain traces how Maciunas’s art insinuated itself into settings as unlikely as the routes of the postal service, the fine print of copyright law, the zoning strictures of urban planning, and the corridors of hospitals. These shifting frames of reference expand our understanding of where an artistic practice can operate and what forms it might assume. In particular, Chamberlain draws on media theory to highlight Maciunas’s ingeniously crafted paperwork, much of which is beautifully reproduced here for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circa 1960, artists working at the margins of the international art world breached the frame of canvas painting and ruptured the institutional frame of art. Members of the Brazilian Neoconcrete group, such as HŽlio Oiticica and Lygia Clark, and their counterparts in Japan, such as Akasegawa Genpei and the Kansai-based Gutai Art Association, challenged the boundaries between art and non-art, between fiction and reality, between visual artwork and its discursive frame. In place of the indefinitely deferred promise of a revolution of the senses, artists called for Òdirect actionÓ here and now. Pedro Erber situates the beginnings of these profound transformations of art in the politically charged debates on realism and abstraction and in the experiments of 1950s concrete poetry. He shows how artists and critics in Brazil and Japan brought modern painting to a point of crisis that paved the way for the radical experiments of the 1960s generation. In contrast to the ÒdematerializationÓ of the art object promoted by New YorkÐbased critics and conceptual artists in the late 1960s, avant-garde artists and poets in Brazil and Japan embraced materiality as intrinsic and fundamental to their highly conceptual practices. Breaching the Frame explores their uncannily contemporaneous trajectories, tracing the emergence of participatory practices and theories that challenged the limits of aesthetic contemplation and redefined the politics of spectatorship.

This collection of images and words, gathered in conjunction with the international Sightlines symposium in Edmonton, Canada, in 1997, reveals the printmaker and the print from many angles. Including more than 250 color images representing more than 120 artists and a text by more than a dozen contributors, Sightlines opens up a rare view of contemporary printmaking around the world.

Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1993 by the late Pace Foods heiress Linda Pace, Artpace has become one of the premiere foundations for contemporary art. An artist residency program based in San Antonio, Texas, Artpace's goal is to give artists time and space in which to imagine new ways to work. Each year, nine artists (three from Texas, three from other areas of the United States and three from abroad) are invited to the foundation to create new work. Selected by guest curators the likes of Robert Storr and Okwui Enwezor, the list of artists who have undertaken residencies at ArtPace is impressive, prescient and diverse, including Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Annette Messager, Tracey Moffatt, Xu Bing, Nancy Rubins, Cornelia Parker, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Glenn Ligon, Kendell Geers, Carolee Schneemann, Mona Hatoum, Isaac Julien, Arturo Herrera, and Christian Jankowski. Dreaming Red includes illustrations of all the works created at ArtPace since its inception, an essay by art historian Eleanor Heartney, short essays on selected artists by the guest curators, including Cuauhtémoc Medina, Lynne Cooke, Chrissie Iles and Judith Russi Kirshner, and a lengthy essay on the personal history of the foundation and its founder.

Book excerpt: An expansive look at the multifaceted American artist Toshiko Takaezu within the history of postwar artmaking Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011) was an American artist whose multidisciplinary work in ceramics, painting, sculpture, weaving, and installation innovatively drew from the natural world, combining expressionist energies with influences from East Asia. The closed ceramic forms for which she is best known are effectively abstract paintings in the round. Her reputation as a ceramic artist, however, has obscured the breadth of her output in other mediums and her role within the larger art movements of the twentieth century. This book provides the first retrospective assessment of Takaezu's art and life, representing her diverse oeuvre, which spanned six decades, and her hybrid identity as an Asian American woman, artist, and teacher. This ambitious volume features essays exploring Takaezu's biography, her background as a Hawai'i-born artist of Okinawan heritage, the relationship between her abstract work and that of her contemporaries, the role of cultural exchange in her art, her impact as an educator, and more. Beautifully illustrated with nearly 300 images of artworks and archival photographs, and including an updated chronology, exhibition history, and recollections from the artist's former apprentices, the book offers a compelling and comprehensive account of this singular artist's career.
