These high elevation, treeless communities are anomalous in the sense that there is no climatic treeline at this latitude. Hence, interest in the grassy balds often has centered on whether they are natural or ahthropogenic in origin (wells 1937; Camp 1931; Billings and Mark 1957; Mark 1958; Gilbert l95h; Bruhn 196a; Gersmehl 1970; Lindsay and Bratton 1976, l979a).
