Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of Finite Groups provides an account of the fundamentals of ordinary and modular representations. This book discusses the fundamental theory of complex representations of finite groups. Organized into five chapters, this book begins with an overview of the basic facts about rings and modules. This text then provides the theory of algebras, including theories of simple algebras, Frobenius algebras, crossed products, and Schur indices with representation-theoretic versions of them. Other chapters include a survey of the fundamental theory of modular representations, with emphasis on Brauer characters. This book discusses as well the module-theoretic representation theory due to Green and includes some topics such as Burry–Carlson's theorem and Scott modules. The final chapter deals with the fundamental results of Brauer on blocks and Fong's theory of covering, and includes some approaches to them. This book is a valuable resource for readers who are interested in the various approaches to the study of the representations of groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate-level text provides a thorough grounding in the representation theory of finite groups over fields and rings. The book provides a balanced and comprehensive account of the subject, detailing the methods needed to analyze representations that arise in many areas of mathematics. Key topics include the construction and use of character tables, the role of induction and restriction, projective and simple modules for group algebras, indecomposable representations, Brauer characters, and block theory. This classroom-tested text provides motivation through a large number of worked examples, with exercises at the end of each chapter that test the reader's knowledge, provide further examples and practice, and include results not proven in the text. Prerequisites include a graduate course in abstract algebra, and familiarity with the properties of groups, rings, field extensions, and linear algebra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Varieties of algebras are equationally defined classes of algebras, or "primitive classes" in MAL'CEV'S terminology. They made their first explicit appearance in the 1930's, in Garrett BIRKHOFF'S paper on "The structure of abstract algebras" and B. H. NEUMANN'S paper "Identical relations in groups I". For quite some time after this, there is little published evidence that the subject remained alive. In fact, however, as part of "universal algebra", it aroused great interest amongst those who had access, directly or indirectly, to PHILIP HALL'S lectures given at Cambridge late in the 1940's. More recently, category theory has provided a general setting since varieties, suitably interpreted, are very special examples of categories. Whether their relevance to category theory goes beyond this, I do not know. And I doubt that the category theoretical approach to varieties will be more than a fringe benefit to group theory. Whether or not my doubts have substance, the present volume owes its existence not to the fact that varieties fit into a vastly more general pattern, but to the benefit group theory has derived from the classification of groups by varietal properties. It is this aspect of the study of varieties that seems to have caused its reappearance in the literature in the 1950's.

Algebraic Groups and Number Theory provides the first systematic exposition in mathematical literature of the junction of group theory, algebraic geometry, and number theory. The exposition of the topic is built on a synthesis of methods from algebraic geometry, number theory, analysis, and topology, and the result is a systematic overview ofalmost all of the major results of the arithmetic theory of algebraic groups obtained to date.

Since 1981, the proceedings of those meetings have provided a regular snapshot of the state of the art in group theory and helped to shape the direction of research in the field. This volume contains selected papers from the 2013 meeting held in St Andrews. It begins with major articles from each of the four main speakers: Emmanuel Breuillard (Paris-Sud), Martin Liebeck (Imperial College London), Alan Reid (Texas) and Karen Vogtmann (Cornell). These are followed by, in alphabetical order, survey articles contributed by other conference participants, which cover a wide spectrum of modern group theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The representations of a finitely generated group in a topological group $G$ form a topological space which is an analytic variety if $G$ is a Lie group, or an algebraic variety if $G$ is an algebraic group. The study of this area draws from and contributes to a wide range of mathematical subjects: algebra, analysis, topology, differential geometry, representation theory, and even mathematical physics. In some cases, the space of representations is the object of the study, in others it is a tool in a program of investigation, and, in many cases, it is both. Most of the papers in this volume are based on talks delivered at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference on the Geometry of Group Representations, held at the University of Colorado in Boulder in July 1987.The conference was designed to bring together researchers from the diverse areas of mathematics involving spaces of group representations. In keeping with the spirit of the conference, the papers are directed at nonspecialists, but contain technical developments to bring the subject to the current research frontier. Some of the papers include entirely new results. Readers will gain an understanding of the present state of research in the geometry of group representations and their applications.

The conference was part of the Algebra Program at the Institute of Mathematical Research and the Mathematics Department at the University of Hong Kong. Topics include recent developments in the following areas: combinatorial and computational aspects of group theory, combinatorial and computational aspects of associative and nonassociative algebras, automorphisms of polynomial algebras and the Jacobian conjecture, and combinatorics and coding theory. This volume can serve as a solid introductory guide for advanced graduate students, as well as a rich and up-to-date reference source for contemporary researchers in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial group theory is a loosely defined subject, with close connections to topology and logic. With surprising frequency, problems in a wide variety of disciplines, including differential equations, automorphic functions and geometry, have been distilled into explicit questions about groups, typically of the following kind: Are the groups in a given class finite (e.g., the Burnside problem)? Finitely generated? Finitely presented? What are the conjugates of a given element in a given group? What are the subgroups of that group? Is there an algorithm for deciding for every pair of groups in a given class whether they are isomorphic or not? The objective of combinatorial group theory is the systematic development of algebraic techniques to settle such questions. In view of the scope of the subject and the extraordinary variety of groups involved, it is not surprising that no really general theory exists. These notes, bridging the very beginning of the theory to new results and developments, are devoted to a number of topics in combinatorial group theory and serve as an introduction to the subject on the graduate level.
