Book excerpt: Tchaikovsky's 'Variations on a Rococo Theme' for cello and orchestra were composed in 1876-77 and indicative of the composer's love of Mozart and the classical style. The work's original cellist, Wilhelm Fitzenhagen had an important influence on the gestation of the work (an edition of Tchaikovsky's original version of the work edited by Raphael Wallfisch and John York is also available (EP7673)). This Edition Peters volume edited by Paul Grümmer contains a piano reduction of the orchestral accompaniment and separate cello part.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Variations on Rococo Theme," op. 33, is a concerto-type work for cello which is considered one of the most technically demanding pieces in the standard repertoire. The piece was dedicated to Wilhelm Fitzenhagen in 1876. In the nearly 150 years since then, this piece has existed in three versions: Tchaikovsky and Fitzenhagen (regarded as the "original" version), Tchaikovsky and Fitzenhagen with a slightly revised ending to the last variation, and the "Fitzenhagen" version which is the most heavily edited and has one variation removed entirely (MacGregor, 2001). However, until now, the most popular version that cellists have performed is the third of these, the Fitzenhagen re-ordered version. It is curious for me that the version by Tchaikovsky's order was not the first choice for performance. Therefore, this creative project is to research its uncertain history, clarify the order of variations, and analysis differences in two versions. By clarifying the history and examining the order of the variations in this piece, this project also will help cello professors and students on the whole understanding for the interpretation of Tchaikovsky Rococo variation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few cello players currently before the public have enjoyed the kind of international success in all conceivable musical career roles as Janos Starker. In his lifetime, Starker has gained renown as teacher, soloist and orchestra player." --Chicago Tribune "Starker . . .remains one of the wonders of the musical world, an artist who finds innumerable ways to shape and color lines." --Cleveland Plain Dealer "Starker is not just a cellist. He is widely recognized as one of the finest of the last 50 years." --Indianapolis Star "Starker emerges here as the rare artist who respects the past but lives enthusiastically in the present. . . Essential. All readers; all levels." --Choice Janos Starker is universally acknowledged as one of the world's great musicians. Known for a flawless technique paired with expressive playing and interpretation, the Hungarian-born cellist is arguably also the premier teacher of his instrument in our time. String players flock to his masterclasses from all over the world, and cellists compete vigorously to study under him at the Indiana University School of Music. More than the consummate musician, however, Starker is also a raconteur and writer, occasionally quirky and droll, always witty and with a pointed opinion to share. The World of Music According to Starker is a colorful autobiography spanning the author's fascinating life. From his early musical education during World War II in Hungary, to his world tours, educational philosophy, and recording and pedagogical legacy, Starker takes the reader on a riveting, entertaining, and informative journey. Included in the book are several of Starker's short stories and commentaries on world events, academia, and--of course--music that have appeared in newspapers, music periodicals, and trade magazines. Also includes a bonus CD recording of Starker's last public recital, which is unavailable commercially and includes his only recording of the Strauss Sonata in F, Opus 6. Included on the CD: Richard Strauss, Sonata in F, Opus 6 Ludwig van Beethoven, Sonata in C major, Opus 102 no. 1 Johannes Brahms, Sonata in E minor, Opus 38 Franz Schubert, Sonatina in D, Opus 137 no. 1 (Starker edition)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No musical genre has had a more chequered critical history than the concerto and yet simultaneously retained as consistently prominent a place in the affections of the concert-going public. This volume, one of very few to deal with the genre in its entirety, assumes a broad remit, setting the concerto in its musical and non-musical contexts, examining the concertos that have made important contributions to musical culture, and looking at performance-related topics. A picture emerges of a genre in a continual state of change, re-inventing itself in the process of growth and development and regularly challenging its performers and listeners to broaden the horizons of their musical experience.
