Book excerpt: Excerpt from Variation in Phenology and Monoterpene Patterns of Defoliated and Nondefoliated Douglas-Fir (Pseudotsuga Menziesii Var. Glauca) Although resistance traits are controlled genetically, their phenotypic expression can be modified substantially by environmental factors (hanover 1975, Mattson and Haack Although environmentally induced phenotypic variation would be minimal for individuals of the same species occupying a relatively comparable microsite, they exhibit differential levels of defoliation (mcdonald 1979, 1981; Perry and Pitman 1983) Because foliage quality, particularly secondary chemicals, seem to play a significant role in plant-host susceptibility and resistance, the hereditability of chemicals such as mono terpenes (squillace 1976) may be beneficial for tree breeding. An important question is whether observed differences in defoliation by Douglas-fir provide a potential manage ment opportunity, that is, whether they would be useful in tree improvement. One of our objectives was to determine if differences in the monoterpene composition of new foli age contribute to differences observed between severely and slightly defoliated Douglas-fir trees. We tested this by examining pairs consisting of each type of tree in an area that is currently undergoing a severe budworm outbreak. A second objective was to determine differences in foliage phenology between trees resistant and those susceptible to budworm to assess if this attribute makes some trees resistant to spruce budworm. The study area was about 8 kilometers east of Cove, Oregon, in the wallowa-whitman National Forest at 1640 meters elevation. Ten pairs of Douglas-fir trees were selected in a mixed-conifer stand experiencing heavy defoliation by C. Occidental/s. Estimates of insect densities for 6 years before the study indicated outbreak populations of 91 to 417 instar lv larvae per square meter of branch area.' We chose pairs of trees that had simi lar diameters and microsites and showed large differences in levels of C. Occidentalis defoliation (table Each tree was within 3 meters of its counterpart. Slopes at the site ranged from 15 to 40 percent and were the same for each tree pair. One tree of each pair exhibited minimal previous-year defoliation, and the other tree exhibited medium to heavy defoliation. The extent of defoliation from previous years was estimated visually. Book excerpt: A new and distinct variety of Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, variety "Torquis", an intervarietal hybrid of coastal variety (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii) and inland variety (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca), having generally upright growth with a curving, twisting, non-directional, at times corkscrew-like pattern to stem and branches, and smaller than average size, while retaining the foliage color and foliage character of a normal Douglas-fir, was discovered in a Douglas-fir test planting on a site near Grangeville, Id., and was asexually reproduced by rooting and grafting.
Download or read book Douglas-Fir written by Denis P. Lavender and published by Oregon Forest Research Laboratory. This book was released on 2014-06-21 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) has a wide distribution in North America and is one of the tree species most widely distributed outside its natural range. The species has been introduced to Europe, New Zealand, South America, and elsewhere around the world. At present, Douglas-fir is an accepted and integral part of forest management in many countries because of its economic importance and its reputation as a genus that may be able to deal with climate change. This book provides an overview of research activities and findings that highlights unique aspects of Douglas-fir physiology, genetics, and other related issues. The authors have pulled together a tremendous amount of information, starting with the evolutionary history and distribution of the genus Pseudotsuga. They provide a detailed description of introductions of Douglas-fir to other countries, including information about initial plantings, provenance trials, and genetic tree improvement activities. In the next sections about life history, the authors bring to bear their long-time research and teaching experiences with detailed descriptions of flowering, seeds, root, and seedling physiology, followed by sections about mycorrhizae and insects, diseases, and other biotic factors. This book will stand the test of time as an invaluable collection and cornerstone of information. It is intended as a resource for everybody interested in understanding the opportunities and challenges of managing Douglas-fir in a variety of regions and settings. It provides information for historians and social scientists investigating forestry trends; researchers, educators, and managers who look for detailed information in areas such as genetics and regeneration practices; and all others interested in the beautiful trees we call Douglas-fir.
