Book excerpt: Analytical benefits of variable-camber capability on subsonic transport aircraft are explored. Using aerodynamic performance models, including drag as a function of deflection angle for control surfaces of interest, optimal performance benefits of variable camber are calculated. Results demonstrate that if all wing trailing-edge surfaces are available for optimization, drag can be significantly reduced at most points within the flight envelope. The optimization approach developed and illustrated for flight uses variable camber for optimization of aerodynamic efficiency (maximizing the lift-to-drag ratio). Most transport aircraft have significant latent capability in this area. Wing camber control that can affect performance optimization for transport aircraft includes symmetric use of ailerons and flaps. In this paper, drag characteristics for aileron and flap deflections are computed based on analytical and wind-tunnel data. All calculations based on predictions for the subject aircraft and the optimal surface deflection are obtained by simple interpolation for given conditions. An algorithm is also presented for computation of optimal surface deflection for given conditions. Benefits of variable camber for a transport configuration using a simple trailing-edge control surface system can approach more than 10 percent, especially for nonstandard flight conditions. In the cruise regime, the benefit is 1-3 percent.Bolonkin, Alexander and Gilyard, Glenn B.Armstrong Flight Research CenterWING CAMBER; WIND TUNNEL TESTS; TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT; ADAPTIVE CONTROL; CAMBERED WINGS; AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS; AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE; COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT; LIFT DRAG RATIO; SUBSONIC SPEED; CONTROL SURFACES; TRAILING EDGES; AILERONS; ALGORITHMS; MACH NUMBER; PITCHING MOMENTS; FLIGHT OPTIMIZATION

Book excerpt: Aerodynamic investigations have shown' that variable camber wings (VCW) for transport aircraft have considerable potential in terms of improving aircraft performance and enhancing their operational flexibility. In order to justify these benefits it is essential that the camber varying system is structurally and mechanically feasible. This research examined the feasibility of providing variable camber to two supercritical aerofoil sections of different'characteristics. The unique method of camber vaTiation was applied by rotating the forward and aft regions of the aerofoil on a circular arc and keeping the surface continuous and matching at their attachment to the main wing box. The change in camber thus increased the chord due to translational motion of the aforementioned regions. The geometries required for varying the forward camber by this method presented formidable design difficulties and no immediate solutions could be found. As a result, an alternative geometry was devised which accepts camber by simply drooping the nose region. A novel idea was developed for aft camber variation, which is considered to be universal for all supercritical aerofoil sections. The system utilises a tracking mechanism which guides a trailing edge element on a continuous arc. Surface continuity is provided by a flexible skin on the upper side and a spring loaded hinged panel on the under side. The flexible skin remains attached to the trailing edge element through a series of roller link arrangement which locate the skin in a separate guide rail. The large moment arm and therefore the increased torsional loads created due to the translational motion of the trailing edge element necessitated investigation of alternative deployment geometries. As a result two additional geometries were schemed. One had reduced radius of rotation and therefore reduced extension, while the other changed camber by drooping the aft region without any chordal extension. Since there was no aerodynamic evid.

Book excerpt: What Is Adaptive Compliant Wing A wing known as an adaptive compliant wing is one that is pliable enough to allow for some features of its form to be altered while the aircraft is in motion. The advantages of having flexible wings are many. The operation of conventional flight control devices often involves the use of hinges, which may result in interruptions to the airflow, vortices, and even, in certain instances, separation of the airflow. These factors add to the drag that the airplane experiences, which in turn leads to decreased efficiency and increased expenses for fuel. Aerofoils that are flexible have the ability to alter aerodynamic forces while causing less disturbances to the flow of air. This results in reduced aerodynamic drag, which leads to increased fuel efficiency. Book excerpt: Morphing Wings Technologies: Large Commercial Aircraft and Civil Helicopters offers a fresh look at current research on morphing aircraft, including industry design, real manufactured prototypes and certification. This is an invaluable reference for students in the aeronautics and aerospace fields who need an introduction to the morphing discipline, as well as senior professionals seeking exposure to morphing potentialities. Practical applications of morphing devices are presented—from the challenge of conceptual design incorporating both structural and aerodynamic studies, to the most promising and potentially flyable solutions aimed at improving the performance of commercial aircraft and UAVs. Morphing aircraft are multi-role aircraft that change their external shape substantially to adapt to a changing mission environment during flight. The book consists of eight sections as well as an appendix which contains both updates on main systems evolution (skin, structure, actuator, sensor, and control systems) and a survey on the most significant achievements of integrated systems for large commercial aircraft. - Provides current worldwide status of morphing technologies, the industrial development expectations, and what is already available in terms of flying systems - Offers new perspectives on wing structure design and a new approach to general structural design - Discusses hot topics such as multifunctional materials and auxetic materials - Presents practical applications of morphing devices

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of Aerodynamic Design of Transport Aircraft stems from the time when the author was appointed part-time professor in the Aerospace Faculty of Delft University of Technology. At the time his main activities were those of leading the departments of Aerodynamics, Performance and Preliminary Design at Fokker Aircraft Company. The groundwork for this book started in 1987 as a series of lecture notes consisting mainly of pictorial material with a minimum of English explanatory text. After the demise of Fokker in 1996 one feared that interest in aeronautical engineering would strongly diminish. As a result of this, the course was discontinued and the relationship between the author and the faculty came to an end. Two years later the situation was reappraised, and the interest in aeronautical engineering remained, so the course was reinstated with a former Fokker colleague Ronald Slingerland as lecturer. The lecture notes from these courses form the foundation of this publication.
