Book excerpt: This thesis brings together the various techniques of X-ray spectral analysis in order to examine the properties of black holes that vary in mass by several orders of magnitude. In all these systems it is widely accepted that the X-ray emission is produced by Compton up-scattering of lower energy seed photons in a hot corona or accretion flow, and here these processes are examined through a study of the X-ray spectral variability of each source. A new technique is introduced, in which models are fitted to over 2 million X-ray spectra on time-scales as short as 16 ms, and subsequently it is shown that the nature of the correlation between intensity and spectral index is strongly dependent upon the spectral state of the black hole. Finally, the results of an extensive survey of nearby galactic nuclei using the Chandra X-ray telescope are presented in the form of images and spectra, and these results are used along with data from the literature to search for Compton-thick nuclei.

Book excerpt: Eight carefully written articles on the interactions between the ideas and concepts of particle physics and those of astrophysics make up this book. Two long introductory lectures give a survey of modern concepts in particle physics and in astrophysics and cosmology, stressing features of common interest. The other six contributions deal with the physics of supernova explosions, with black holes, with neutrino oscillations, with the importance of phase transitions for the large-scale structure of the Universe, and with the use of the ideas of quantum gravity for computer simulations. These rather detailed review articles will be of value for many years to come. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers both in particle physics and in astrophysics.

Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documen tation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysies, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 44 records literature published in 1987 and received before February 15, 1988. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are inc1uded too. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. We also express our gratitude to all organiza tions, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. Dr. Siegfried Böhme retired from his duties as co-editor of Astronomy and Astro physics Abstracts on December 31, 1987. Since 1950 he partieipated in the biblio graphie work of the institute. He served as a reviewer for the Astronomischer Jahresbericht and became one of the editors of Astronomy and Astrophysics Ab stracts in 1969. After his retirement in 1975 he took care of, particularly, the Russian literature on a voluntary basis for 12 years. It is a pleasure to thank Siegfried Böhme for his valuable contributions. Starting with Volume 33, all the recording, correction, and data processing work was done by means of computers. The recording was done by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Christiane Jehn, Ms. Monika Kohl, Ms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-energy astrophysics involves the study of exceedingly dynamic and energetic phenomena occurring near the most extreme celestial objects known to exist, such as black holes, neutron stars, white dwarfs, and supernova remnants. High-Energy Astrophysics provides graduate and advanced undergraduate students with the most complete, self-contained introduction to the subject available. This textbook covers all the essentials, weaving together the latest theory with the experimental techniques, instrumentation, and observational methods astronomers use to study high-energy radiation from space. Fulvio Melia introduces topics at the forefront of today's research, including relativistic particles, energetic radiation, and accretion disk theory. No other textbook offers such a thorough yet concise treatment of the key aspects of high-energy astrophysics--both theoretical and observational--or delves as deeply into modern detection techniques, satellite systems, and analytical and numerical modeling used by theoreticians. Amply illustrated, High-Energy Astrophysics is also ideal for researchers interested in the application of fundamental physical laws to understand how matter and radiation behave in regions of the universe where physical conditions are most extreme. Uniquely weaves together the theoretical and experimental aspects of this important branch of astronomy Features stunning images of the high-energy sky Fully describes the principal classes of high-energy sources, with an in-depth study of many archetypal objects within them Provides an excellent, self-contained resource for the classroom, written by a preeminent researcher and teacher in the field

Book excerpt: This volume contains all but one of the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on HOI Thin Plasmas in Astrophysics held in Cargese, Corsica, from September 8 to 18, 1987. The meeting was planned in collaboration with the members of the Scientific Organizing Committee, 10 whom I am grateful for suggesting a comprehensive and well balanced program. The SOC was comprised of Prof. J. Bleeker (Space Research Institute. Utrecht, The Netherlands), Dr. C. Cesarsky (CEN Saclay, France), Dr. R. Mushotzky (GSFC, USA), Prof. K. Pounds (University of Leicester, UK), Prof. H. Schnopper (Danish Space Research Laboratory, Denmark), Dr. H. Tananbaum (Center for Astrophysics, USA), Dr. G. Trinchieri (Arcetri Observatory, Italy), and Prof. 1. Truemper (MPE, Garching, Germany). The ASI, fully supported by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, was organized with the intent of providing a critical and up-to-date overview of our present kowledge and understanding of the properties of hot thin plasmas in astrophysics as they are revealed by X-ray observations from space. The X-ray and UV emission from optically thin thermal plasmas is a common feature of many astrophysical systems. This type of emission occurs in the solar corona and in the coronae of other stars, in supernova remnants and in the hot interstellar medium, in normal galaxies and galactic halos, and in the intergalactic gas in clusters.

Book excerpt: by the completion of large aperture synthesis radio telescopes, which have permitted a detailed mapping of radio sources, and by the development of very long base-line interferometry (VLBI), with 4 3 resolutions down to 10- - 10- arc sec, which for the first time has rendered possible radio investigations of the structures of the very compact radio sources found in galactic nuclei and quasars. The observations obtained with this new instrumentation, combined with the work in the optical, infrared and X-ray domain, have made great strides in recent years toward improved testing of radio source models. We feel that the material presented at the Institute represents a rather complete and comprehensive coverage of the present status of studies of non-thermal radio sources, though one is aware of rapid developments in this field of research. The various aspects of this exciting subject were covered in a series of lectures, pre sented in this volume, totaling 44 hours and in 14 topical seminars given by the participants. I wish to express my gratitude to the Scientific Affairs Divi sion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the generous support given to the course. Sincere thanks are also due to Mr. L. Baldeschi for helping with the organization of the meeting and for drawing a number of figures contained in this volume; to Mrs. B. Mandel for the patient typing and help in the editing; and to Mr. R. Primavera for the photographic reproduction of part of the figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High time-resolution astrophysics (HTRA) involves measuring and studying astronomical phenomena on timescales of seconds to milliseconds. Although many areas of astronomy, such as X-ray astronomy and pulsar observations, have traditionally required high time-resolution studies, HTRA techniques are now being applied to optical, infrared and gamma-ray wavelength regimes, due to the development of high efficiency detectors and larger telescopes that can gather photons at a higher rate. With lectures from eminent scientists aimed at young researchers and postdoctorate students in observational astronomy and astrophysics, this volume gives a practical overview and introduction to the tools and techniques of HTRA. Just as multi-spectral observations of astrophysical phenomena are already yielding new scientific results, many astronomers are optimistic that exploring the time domain will open up an important new frontier in observational astronomy over the next decade.
