Download or read book The Varanger Saami written by Knut Odner and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Varanger Saami is a narrative of 700 years of history of a small group of Saami (Lapps) who live near the base of the Varangerfjord in north-east Norway. Dramatic social and economic changes occurred in this area during this period. Once targeted for taxation by Norway, Sweden, and Russia, the Varanger Saami became part of the kingdom of Norway in 1613. Once exclusively hunters and fisherman, the Saami splintered in the 18th century into two groups: the majority turned to cattle raising and commercialized fishing while a minority became full-time reindeer pastoralists. Habitation patterns also underwent radical change, from large camps in the middle ages to increasingly nuclear settlement patterns in the 17th century. Knut Odner attributes this process of dynamic change to the ideology of self-reliance among the Saami.

Download or read book The Making of a Land written by Ivar B. Ramberg and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Making of a Land - Geology of Norway" takes the reader on a journey in geological time, from primordial times to the present day. A fantastic journey from the summits of Norway's spectacular rugged and weather-beaten mountains to the riches concealed in the sedimentary rocks on the continental shelf. This book displays the treasures of Norwegian geology for everyone to see. Norway's geological resources represent the foundation of its welfare state. During several centuries first the mining, and then the oil industries have been economic mainstays, and this will continue in the future. The book presents a description both of Norway and the planet we inhabit and depend on for our survival. It is lavishly illustrated with photographs and maps from all over the country.
Book Synopsis Future North by : Janike Kampevold Larsen
Download or read book Future North written by Janike Kampevold Larsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing Arctic is of broad political concern and is being studied across many fields. This book investigates ongoing changes in the Arctic from a landscape perspective. It examines settlements and territories of the Barents Sea Coast, Northern Norway, the Russian Kola Peninsula, Svalbard and Greenland from an interdisciplinary, design-based and future-oriented perspective. The Future North project has travelled Arctic regions since 2012, mapped landscapes and settlements, documented stories and practices, and discussed possible futures with local actors. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the project, the authors in this book look at political and economic strategies, urban development, land use strategies and local initiatives in specific locations that are subject to different forces of change. This book explores current material conditions in the Arctic as effects of industrial and political agency and social initiatives. It provides a combined view on the built environment and urbanism, as well as the cultural and material landscapes of the Arctic. The chapters move beyond single-disciplinary perspectives on the Arctic, and engage with futures, cultural landscapes and communities in ways that build on both architectural and ethnographic participatory methods.

This is a wonderfully evocative book which creates a vivid sense of place for one of the planet's last wildernesses, and will appeal to anyone who loves wildlife and wild places. The Independent "An informative and easy-to-read text on a part of the natural world unfamiliar to many. It is a fascinating, enjoyable book." Wildlife Activist, Summer 2006
Book Synopsis Community Adaptation and Vulnerability in Arctic Regions by : Grete K. Hovelsrud
Download or read book Community Adaptation and Vulnerability in Arctic Regions written by Grete K. Hovelsrud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘Year’ That Changed How We View the North This book is about a new theoretical approach that transformed the field of Arctic social studies and about a program called International Polar Year 2007–2008 (IPY) that altered the position of social research within the broader polar science. The concept for IPY was developed in 2003–2005; its vision was for researchers from many nations to work together to gain cro- disciplinary insight into planetary processes, to explore and increase our understanding of the polar regions, the Arctic and Antarctica, and of their roles in the global system. IPY 2007–2008, the fourth program of its kind, followed in the footsteps of its predecessors, the first IPY in 1882–1883, the second IPY in 1932–1933, and the third IPY (later renamed to ‘International Geophysical Year’ or IGY) in 1957–1958. All earlier IPY/IGY have been primarily geophysical initiatives, with their focus on meteorology, atmospheric and geomagnetic observations, and with additional emphasis on glaciology and sea ice circulation. As such, they excluded socio-economic disciplines and polar indigenous people, often deliberately, except for limited ethnographic and natural history collection work conducted by some expeditions of the first IPY. That once dominant vision biased heavily towards geophysics, oceanography, and ice-sheets, left little if any place for people, that is, the social sciences and the humanities, in what has been commonly viewed as the ‘hard-core’ polar research.

Book Synopsis Children, Identity and the Past by : Liv Helga Dommasnes
Download or read book Children, Identity and the Past written by Liv Helga Dommasnes and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, fourteen authors representing different academic fields and traditions present their work on children in past societies: how to recognise children in the archaeological record, the conditions of their lives and deaths and how they may have been perceived by their contemporaries. The case studies, from a number of European sites, cover a time-span from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. A central theme in many of the contributions is socialisation and education as part of identity-forming processes. What was it like to be a child in Palaeolithic times? How did the Early Medieval Church approach the teaching of children? Socialisation is a theme echoed also in the two papers dealing with teaching children of today about the past, as the authors discuss how the past can be used in present identity-forming processes. During the last c. 20 years, the archaeology of children has been enriching our understandings of the past. The papers in this volume make us realise that the study of children will have a profound impact on the study of past societies in general, challenging us to reconsider established notions of prehistoric community life. The past will never be the same after its children have entered the scene…
