Book excerpt: A doctor begins to doubt her own sanity as she investigates a patient’s wild claims in this new mystery from the author of Lethal Resuscitation . . . Dr. Cathy Moreland is taken aback when an irate patient comes to her practice claiming his ailing wife has been kidnapped by one of her colleagues using a false name. Is someone impersonating a doctor, or is Adam Steer delusional? After looking into Adam’s claims, she feels reassured that no such thing actually happened—but continues to worry that Steer is mentally unwell. A visit to his home only leads to more alarm. No one answers the door, but Cathy overhears a conversation that convinces her something sinister is going on—and that she herself may be in danger. Cathy’s own bipolar disorder is well-managed, but she’s beginning to doubt her own sanity—and others are, too. As strange developments unfold, will she be able to make any sense of the events around her before everything spirals out of control?

Book Synopsis Culture, Urbanism and Planning by : Manuel Guardia
Download or read book Culture, Urbanism and Planning written by Manuel Guardia and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between culture and urbanism has been the focus of much discussion and debate in recent years. While globalisation tends towards a homogeneity, successful 'global cities' have a strong individual – and particularly cultural – identity. The economic value of the culture of cities lies not only in the arts taking place there but also in the city’s fabric, its architecture, and in its cultural heritage. This volume brings together a team of leading specialists to examine the policies of image and city marketing which have developed over the past 15 years and whether these are a continuity of earlier strategies. Featuring case studies which illustrate diverse perspectives on linking culture, urbanism and history, the book reviews heritage and planning culture, looking at the experience of urbanism in the 'Old Historic City'. The book also assesses the increasingly important issue of urban images and their influence on planning strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alani Baum, a non-binary photographer and teacher, hasn’t seen their mother since they ran away with their girlfriend when they were seventeen -- almost thirty years ago. But when Alani gets a call from a doctor at the assisted living facility where their mother has been for the last five years, they learn that their mother’s dementia has worsened and appears to have taken away her ability to speak. As a result, Alani suddenly find themselves running away again -- only this time, they’re running back to their mother. Staying at their mother’s empty home, Alani attempts to tie up the loose ends of their mother’s life while grappling with the painful memories that—in the face of their mother’s disease -- they’re terrified to lose. Meanwhile, the memories inhabiting the house slowly grow animate, and the longer Alani is there, the longer they’re forced to confront the fact that any closure they hope to get from this homecoming will have to be manufactured. This beautiful, tenderly written debut novel by Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers winner John Elizabeth Stintzi explores what haunts us most, bearing witness to grief over not only what is lost, but also what remains. Book Synopsis "Architects, Angels, Activists and the City of Bath, 1765?965 " by : Cynthia Imogen Hammond
Download or read book "Architects, Angels, Activists and the City of Bath, 1765?965 " written by Cynthia Imogen Hammond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique contribution to the architectural and social history of Bath, Architects, Angels, Activists and the City of Bath, 1765-1965: Engaging with Women's Spatial Interventions in Buildings and Landscape approaches the past with the methods of the architectural historian and the site-specific interventions of the contemporary artist. Looking beyond and behind Bath's strategic marshalling of its past, Cynthia Imogen Hammond presents the ways in which women across classes shaped the built environment and designed landscapes of one of England's most architecturally significant cities. This study argues that Bath's efforts to preserve itself as an idealized Georgian town reveal an aesthetics of exclusion. Jane Austen may be well known, but the role of historic women in the creation of this city has had minimal treatment within the city's collective, public memory. This book is an intervention into this memory; the author uses site-specific works of public art as strategic counterparts to her historical readings. Through them, she aims to transform as well as critique the urban image of Bath. At once a performative literature, an extensively researched history, and an alternative guide to the city, Architects, Angels, Activists engages with current struggles over urban signification in Bath and beyond.

Book Synopsis Condensation And Coherence In Condensed Matter, Proceedings Of The Nobel Jubilee Symposium by : T Claeson
Download or read book Condensation And Coherence In Condensed Matter, Proceedings Of The Nobel Jubilee Symposium written by T Claeson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-03-21 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, the Nobel Foundation celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel Prize, and all previous Nobel laureates were invited to attend the Nobel ceremonies in Stockholm. This gave an excellent opportunity for arranging jubilee symposia with topics that would attract several of the laureates. The chosen subject of “Condensation and Coherence in Condensed Systems” attracted sixteen Nobel laureates and another thirty-five leading scientists. The idea was to bring scientists together from several related subdisciplines: atomic physics, quantum optics, and condensed matter physics, for cross-breeding of ideas, concepts, and experience. Subjects like phase transitions in strongly coupled systems, Bose-Einstein condensation in weakly coupled systems, macroscopic quantum phenomena, coherence in mesoscopic structures, and quantum information were intensively discussed from different points of view. Coherence phenomena in condensed systems were emphasized. A special session was devoted to the emerging field of quantum computing, with experimental and theoretical results reported for different types of qu-bits. The 2001 Nobel Prize awarded to Eric Cornell, Wolfgang Ketterle, and Carl Wieman, “for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates,” gave an extra flavor to the theme of the Centennial Symposium.
Book Synopsis Conservation in the Age of Consensus by : John Pendlebury
Download or read book Conservation in the Age of Consensus written by John Pendlebury and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new text on the subject of conservation in the built environment provides a unique holistic view on the understanding of the practice of conservation connecting it with wider societal and political forces. UK practice is used as a means, along with international examples, for bringing together a real understanding of practice with a social science analysis of the issues. The author introduces ideas about the meanings and values attached to historic environments and how that translates into public policies of conservation.

Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Chemical Physics is dedicated, by the contributors, to Moshe Shapiro, formerly Canada Research Chair in Quantum Control in the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia and Jacques Mimran Professor of Chemical Physics at the Weizmann Institute, who passed away on December 3, 2013. It focuses primarily on the interaction of light with molecules, one of Moshe's longstanding scientific loves. However, the wide range of topics covered in this volume constitutes but a small part of Moshe's vast range of scientific interests, which are well documented in over 300 research publications and two books.
