Book Synopsis Politicians on an Island by : Ronald J. Plachno
Download or read book Politicians on an Island written by Ronald J. Plachno and published by Ronald J. Plachno. This book was released on 2015-05-02 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a humor book, intended to make you smile. It is set an undisclosed distance in the future, in the USA, in order to try and not conflict with any political parties or people or issues of today. In this future USA, the political parties are now the "Bulls" and the "Bears." And for the sake of humor, they are even more extreme than today, and to say the least, do not get along. But fortunately the rules for becoming a US president are now easier. A very nice man and his family had just emigrated to the US from Asia, India in particular, and this nice man and his family wish to help out their new country, the US. And so Rajak Gandhi Patel the 35th manages to become president. But can he deal with the craziness he sees? Is the family really prepared for what they find? Will anyone help him? I realize that a person could ask me, the author if I have any political bent in this book. And that answer would be "no." I do not belong to any political party. I do not even go to all birthday parties that I am invited to. And more to the point, I made both parties so extreme that I certainly would not want to belong to either of these parties, and my guess is that the reader will feel the same way. But that is getting too serious. The purpose of this book is simply humor. And my goal is to make you smile. If this book has any point at all, other than humor, it might be the good that just a few good people can accomplish, and that people accomplish more when they work together. Other than that, it is all in fun. I truly hope others will enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. -Ron Plachno (author)
Book Synopsis Postmodern Vampires by : Sorcha Ní Fhlainn
Download or read book Postmodern Vampires written by Sorcha Ní Fhlainn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postmodern Vampires: Film, Fiction, and Popular Culture is the first major study to focus on American cultural history from the vampire’s point of view. Beginning in 1968, Ní Fhlainn argues that vampires move from the margins to the centre of popular culture as representatives of the anxieties and aspirations of their age. Mapping their literary and screen evolution on to the American Presidency, from Richard Nixon to Donald Trump, this essential critical study chronicles the vampire’s blood-ties to distinct socio-political movements and cultural decades in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Through case studies of key texts, including Interview with the Vampire, The Lost Boys, Blade, Twilight, Let Me In, True Blood and numerous adaptations of Dracula, this book reveals how vampires continue to be exemplary barometers of political and historical change in the American imagination. It is essential reading for scholars and students in Gothic and Horror Studies, Film Studies, and American Studies, and for anyone interested in the articulate undead.

Download or read book A People's History of the Vampire Uprising written by Raymond A. Villareal and published by Mulholland Books. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious and wildly original debut -- part social-political satire, part international mystery -- a new virus turns people into something a bit more than human, upending society as we know it. This panoramic fictional oral history begins with one small mystery: the body of a young woman found in an Arizona border town, presumed to be an illegal immigrant, disappears from the town morgue. To the young CDC investigator called in to consult with the local police, it's an impossibility that threatens her understanding of medicine. Then, more bodies, dead from an inexplicable disease that solidified their blood, are brought to the morgue, only to also vanish. Soon, the U.S. government -- and eventually biomedical researchers, disgruntled lawmakers, and even an insurgent faction of the Catholic Church -- must come to terms with what they're too late to stop: an epidemic of vampirism that will sweep first the United States, and then the world. With heightened strength and beauty and a stead diet of fresh blood, these changed people, or "Gloamings," rapidly rise to prominence in all aspects of modern society. Soon people are beginning to be "re-created," willingly accepting the risk of death if their bodies can't handle the transformation. As new communities of Gloamings arise, society is divided, and popular Gloaming sites come under threat from a secret terrorist organization. But when a charismatic and wealthy businessman, recently turned, runs for political office -- well, all hell breaks loose. Told from the perspective of key players, including a cynical FBI agent, an audacious campaign manager, and a war veteran turned nurse turned secret operative, A People's History of the Vampire Uprising is an exhilarating, genre-bending debut that is as addictive as the power it describes.

Book Synopsis The Presidential Fringe by : Mark Stein
Download or read book The Presidential Fringe written by Mark Stein and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This offbeat slice of American history places the story of our great republic beneath an unexpected lens: that of fringe candidates for president of the United States. Mark Stein explores how their quest for our nation’s highest office helped to amplify voices otherwise quashed during their day. His careening tour through elections past includes the efforts of true pioneers in the quest for social equality in our country: the first woman to run for president, Victoria Woodhull in 1872; the first African American to run for president, George E. Taylor in 1904; and the first openly gay cross-dressing candidate for president, Joan Jett Blakk in 1992. But The Presidential Fringe also takes a look at those who would jest their way into the Oval Office, from comedians such as Will Rogers and Gracie Allen to Pat Paulsen and Stephen Colbert. Along the way, Stein shows how even seemingly zany candidates, such as “Live Forever” Jones, Vegetarian Party candidate John Maxwell, Flying Saucer Party candidate Gabriel Green, or, most recently, Vermin Supreme, provide extraordinary insights of clarity into who we were when they ran for president and how we became who we are today. Ultimately, Stein’s examination reveals that it was often precisely these fringe candidates who planted the seeds from which mainstream candidates later harvested genuine, positive change. Written in Stein’s direct and witty style, The Presidential Fringe surveys and portrays an American landscape rife with the unlikely, unassuming, unexpected, and (in a few cases) unbalanced presidential hopefuls who, in their own way, have contributed to this nation’s founding quest to form a more perfect Union.
Book Synopsis THE VAMPIRE AWAKENING by : Allan Lavey
Download or read book THE VAMPIRE AWAKENING written by Allan Lavey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, the legend and the mystique of the Vampire endures. Why? This is due in no small part to the power of the archetype in the minds of humankind. It is the spirit that is the Vampire and the emergent force that its presence continues to paint within modern day Vampire culture. The Vampire mirrors the reflections of those qualities that particular people seek to emulate within themselves for what can only be embraced as an innate reason. It's been said by many people that they feel born to it. The Vampire commands its own presence at the core of humankind's nature. In some way, everyone ponders the power that resides in the nightside of our being. For those who identify as Vampire, this is the core of what the Vampire is. The nightside of a state of essence. The Vampire is rooted in an ascendance to another state of being. An altered state of vibration if you will, an essence that those who call themselves Vampire, seek to rise to. The current state of Vampire Culture has evolved from the roots of its being in the late 1980's and into the 1990's into what it continues to present of itself now. For those who have submersed themselves into the culture, they parlay at the color and the spirit of all that they embrace as being Vampire. Then there are those who understand, intimately, that what this is truly all about to them, is the acceptance of themselves into another state of being entirely. This is when: "The Awakening" takes place for some. The Vampire Awakening.
