Book excerpt: Tank Commander and Gunner performance on nine critical tank gunnery training tasks, as well as experience measures were correlated with performance on Tank Gunnery Table VIII. Results showed that (a) performance on the subcaliber training range (1/60 scale cal. 22) was the best predictor of Table VIII performance, (b) there was no relationship between crew turbulence measures and gunnery performance, and (c) the Gunner's job experience was positively correlated with Table VIII performance. Book excerpt: This research proposes methods for specifying realistic threat-based conditions under which to conduct training and testing. Selection of conditions for training focused on the Mission Essential Task List (METL). Platoon, crew, and individual tasks were included. The procedure was designed to be sensitive to differences in initial task proficiency and difficulty in the importance of tasks depending on the unit's METL. To develop methods, researchers, constructed an algorithm to estimate potential proficiency gains for platoon, crew, and individual tasks that could occur from practicing each of the threat engagements. The algorithm is iterative; on each iteration it selects that engagement that is predicted to provide the maximum payoff in total expected proficiency gain weighted by importance. Subsequent iterations recalculate expected proficiency gains to adjust for the gain expected from the engagements already selected. Thus, the algorithm identifies the rank order of engagements for maximizing proficiency gains on important and poorly performed tasks. The algorithm was implemented in a BASIC computer program. Additional support programs were written to input and update changes in tasks and engagements. The BASIC program should allow unit commanders to rapidly determine which threat-based engagements to use to provide the most beneficial context for training gunnery tasks most closely related to their METL. Book excerpt: "Based on the analysis of gunnery scores fired by 171 M1A2 tank crews, an easy-to-use strategy was developed for predicting which crews will, and will not, first-run qualify on Tank Table VIII before all of the typically required ten engagements have been fired. Scores are added as each engagement is fired and the resulting sum is compared to tabular formatted cutoff scores established to support accurate qualification predictions. Adherence to this strategy will help Active Army armor unit commanders to maximize the efficiency of tank gunnery evaluation by reducing the number of first-run engagements fired, as well as the range time and operational tempo (OPTEMPO) resources spent in doing so, by roughly 20% without sacrificing the purpose and intent of the crew-level gunnery certification process."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: "A strategy is proposed for minimizing the device-based training time required to prepare armor crews of the U.S. Army National Guard for on-tank training and live-fire gunnery qualification. Using two devices (i.e., the Conduct-of-Fire Tramer (COFT) and Abrans Full-Crew Interactive Simulation Trainer (AFIST), efficiency is achieved by training only gunnery engagements subjected to later live-fire evaluation, focusing on those engagements not performed to standard, and allocating training time to crews that need it most, as determined through pretesting. Guidance is provided to support strategy implementation at the company level and the conduct of research needed for future strategy refinement."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: Training simulators, developed to ease the burden on resources and to provide low-cost alternatives, must be field tested prior to their use. This report describes the field trials of the Perceptronics MK60, a part-task tank gunnery simulator which through computer control (1) presents target engagements recorded on a videodisc, (2) enables students to operate switches and controls, track and fire, and (3) provides feedback about their performance. The purpose of the field trials was to assess, in an institutional setting (1) the training effectiveness of the MK60 for teaching gunnery skills, (2) the transfer of that training to M60A1 tank performance, (3) the validity of the MK60 for predicting M60A1 performance of individual soldiers, and (4) the opinions of students and instructors. Field trials were conducted with Armor Officer Basic students and with enlisted students in basic Armor Training. Two intensities of simulator training were compared to the normal programs of instruction. Results indicated that (1) performance on the simulator increased as a direct function of practice time, with improvements in speed of achieving target hits and in consistency of gunner verbal respones; (2) transfer of training from the MK60 to dry fire and live fire on the M60A1 tank appeared equal to that of the devices currently used in gunnery training; (3) the MK60 was not predictive of individual soldiers' M60A1 performance; and (4) students and instructors found the simulator challenging, realistic and they were very favorable toward its use. Book excerpt: This research was conducted to develop and evaluate job samples as predictors of tank gunnery performance. In Phase I of the research two potentially useful job sample predictors were identified and validated. Phase II results provided cross-validation of these predictors. Subjects in Phases I & II consisted of recent Armor OSUT graduates. Approximately one-half the subjects in Phase III were administered the job sample tests during their eight week of training while the remaining one-half were tested at the Fort Knox Reception Station, i.e., prior to training. Phase III results demonstrated that feedback had no effect on job sample-tank gunnery relationships; however, level of prior training did have an effect. Eight week personnel performed at a higher level than Reception Station personnel on most job sample tasks. Results suggest that the job samples evaluated here offer promise in predicting performance after initial training and may be adaptable for use with the operational unit assignment process.
