Book excerpt: This volume on “Advances in Analysis and Design of Deep Foundations” contains 22 technical papers which cover various aspects of analysis and design of deep foundations based on full-scale field testing, numerical modeling, and analytical solutions. The technical papers are 8-10 pages long that present the results and findings from research as well as practical-oriented studies on deep foundations that are of interest to civil/geotechnical engineering community. The topics cover a wide spectrum of applications that include evaluation of the axial and lateral capacity of piles, pile group effects, evaluation of the increase in pile capacity with time (or pile setup), influence of excavation on pile capacity, study the behavior of pile raft caisson foundations, evaluate the bearing capacity and settlement of piles from cone penetration tests, etc. This volume is part of the proceedings of the 1st GeoMEast International Congress and Exhibition on Sustainable Civil Infrastructures, Egypt 2017.

Book excerpt: In Maine, there are often cases where the depth to bedrock prohibits integral abutments bridges from being used. The goal of this research is to determine the feasibility of constructing integral abutments in conditions that cannot provide the fixed support conditions that are traditionally assumed. A finite element model was created that incorporates realistic constitutive and surface interaction models.

Book excerpt: Bridge Maintenance, Safety, Management, Life-Cycle Sustainability and Innovations contains lectures and papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management (IABMAS 2020), held in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, April 11–15, 2021. This volume consists of a book of extended abstracts and a USB card containing the full papers of 571 contributions presented at IABMAS 2020, including the T.Y. Lin Lecture, 9 Keynote Lectures, and 561 technical papers from 40 countries. The contributions presented at IABMAS 2020 deal with the state of the art as well as emerging concepts and innovative applications related to the main aspects of maintenance, safety, management, life-cycle sustainability and technological innovations of bridges. Major topics include: advanced bridge design, construction and maintenance approaches, safety, reliability and risk evaluation, life-cycle management, life-cycle sustainability, standardization, analytical models, bridge management systems, service life prediction, maintenance and management strategies, structural health monitoring, non-destructive testing and field testing, safety, resilience, robustness and redundancy, durability enhancement, repair and rehabilitation, fatigue and corrosion, extreme loads, and application of information and computer technology and artificial intelligence for bridges, among others. This volume provides both an up-to-date overview of the field of bridge engineering and significant contributions to the process of making more rational decisions on maintenance, safety, management, life-cycle sustainability and technological innovations of bridges for the purpose of enhancing the welfare of society. The Editors hope that these Proceedings will serve as a valuable reference to all concerned with bridge structure and infrastructure systems, including engineers, researchers, academics and students from all areas of bridge engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iowa Department of Transportation has long recognized that approach slab pavements of integral abutment bridges are prone to settlement and cracking, which manifests as the "bump at the end of the bridge". A commonly recommended solution is to integrally attach the approach slab to the bridge abutment. Two different approach slabs, one being precast concrete and the other being cast-in-place concrete, were integrally connected to side-by-side bridges and investigated. The primary objective of this investigation was to evaluate the approach slab performance and the impacts the approach slabs have on the bridge. To satisfy the research needs, the project scope involved a literature review, survey of Midwest Department of Transportation current practices, implementing a health monitoring system on the bridge and approach slab, interpreting the data obtained during the evaluation, and conducting periodic visual inspections. Based on the information obtained from the testing the following general conclusions were made: The integral connection between the approach slabs and the bridges appear to function well with no observed distress at this location and no relative longitudinal movement measured between the two components; Tying the approach slab to the bridge appears to impact the bridge; The two different approach slabs, the longer precast slab and the shorter cast-in-place slab, appear to impact the bridge differently; The measured strains in the approach slabs indicate a force exists at the expansion joint and should be taken into consideration when designing both the approach slab and the bridge; The observed responses generally followed an annual cyclic and/or short term cyclic pattern over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Performance Steel (HPS) has quickly gained popularity in United States bridge applications due to its high yield strength and better weldability, toughness, ductility, and weathering characteristics. However, a great deal of information is missing from the body of knowledge on HPS performance and design criteria, especially concerning HPS-70W (485W) produced by thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP). This research examines material characteristics and fatigue performance of HPS-70W (485W) TMCP, as well the performance of Ohio's first HPS bridge in service. Data from 96 tensile tests show that yield and ultimate strengths of HPS-70W (485W) TMCP are dependent upon plate thickness and orientation. 75 Charpy V-Notch (CVN) specimens were tested, and all met the ASTM A709 requirement for minimum toughness. Twenty-nine specimens were tested to investigate the fatigue resistance of continuous plates with punched, drilled, and reamed holes. Results from this investigation suggest that current restrictions mandated by some state departments of transportation concerning punching holes are not overly restrictive when HPS-485W (70W) is utilized. Performance of drilled and sub-punched and reamed specimens met or exceeded American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) (2004) requirements for Category B details. Performance of Submerged Arc Weld (SAW) and Narrow Gap Improved Electroslag Weld (NGI-ESW) welded butt-splices utilizing HPS-70W (485W) were examined. All specimens performed considerably better than predicted by the AASHTO fatigue life equation.
