Book excerpt: I developed the mathematical basis for a new and cost effective method to estimate reservoir pressure and effective water permeability in low permeability reservoirs. This method, called Baseline/Calibration, was successfully tested in Wamsutter fields. This approach, which is an alternative to time-consuming DFIT tests and conventional pressure buildup tests, requires injection of water in multiple short stages. Sandface pressure and flow rate are analyzed to estimate reservoir pressure and permeability. I derived analytical expressions which provide a mathematical basis for this method. The analytical formulations are based on transient solutions to the diffusivity equation, the principle of superposition, and assume piston-like displacement of reservoir fluids with injected water. I constructed several numerical simulation models and validated the proposed technique. I also analyzed flow rate and pressure data from two field trials performed in the Almond formation of the Wamsutter field. The results of numerical simulation and field trials of this method verified that our method accurately determines reservoir pressure with short injection tests. Reservoir pressure is a fundamental property of the reservoir and its depletion provides an insight in to the reservoir dynamics and drainage pattern. Measurements of formation pressure and in-situ reservoir permeability are important for a variety of reasons including estimation of ultimate recovery, production forecasting, and optimization of depletion planning. Unconventional gas reservoirs are economically viable hydrocarbon prospects that have proven to be very successful. However, conventional well tests methods are often impractical in unconventional reservoirs. Long shut-in times are required for estimates of reservoir pressure and reservoir permeability.

Shale gas and tight gas provides over half of the natural gas production in the United States. Linear flow is the most common flow type in tight and shale gas reservoirs. A density-based analytical approach was proposed by Vardcharragosad and Ayala (2014) that could predict well production performance in the linear flow regime. However, this approach requires reservoir and fluid properties for the prediction. As matter of fact, most of these reservoir properties are unknown and undetermined. The thrust of this study is to predict the long-term (Boundary-dominated period) well production behavior with the reservoir properties as inputs through an updated density-based approach.The BDF model proposed in this study is based on Vardcharragosad and Ayalas density-based approach (2015). A novel and key task for the BDF production prediction is the utilization of historical production data, which is often termed as Production Data Analysis (PDA). A PDA technique is used to estimate the characterization ratio, which is applied to replace reservoir properties in the prediction model. In addition, transition time needs to be determined to estimate reservoir size because it determines the starting point of the boundary-dominated flow. By using the estimated characterization ratio and the transition time, the novel density-based approach could be re-constructed without inputting specific reservoir properties. The proposed model was initially validated with numerical simulation results.This thesis presents a method to predict boundary-dominated flow behavior in tight and shale gas reservoirs without the knowledge of reservoir properties. The proposed transition time determination approach shows advantages over traditional end of half slope method. Thus, original gas in place can be directly calculated from results of transition time determination and early data analysis more accurately. Also, cost of techniques on determining reservoir properties such as well logging could be reduced.

The "original" problem of predicting the corrected or "liquid equivalent" permeability has been under investigation since the early 1940s -- in particular, using the application of "gas slippage" theory to petrophysics by Klinkenberg. In the first part of this work, the viability of the Jones-Owens and Sampath-Keighin correlations for estimating the Klinkenberg-corrected (absolute) permeability from single-point, steady-state measurements were investigated. We also provide an update to these correlations using modern petrophysical data. In the second part of this work we proposed and validated a new "microflow" model for the evaluation of an equivalent liquid permeability from gas flow measurements. This work was based on a more detailed application of similar concepts employed by Klinkenberg. In fact, we obtained the Klinkenberg result as an approximate form of this result. A theoretical "microflow" result was given as a rational polynomial (i.e., a polynomial divided by a polynomial) in terms of the Knudsen number (ratio of the mean free path of the gas molecules to the characteristic flow length (typically the radius of the capillary)), and this result can be applied as an explicit correlation device, or as an implicit prediction model (presuming the model is tuned to a particular data set). The following contributions are derived from this work: Validation and extension of the correlations proposed by Jones-Owens and Sampath-Keighin for low permeability samples. Development and validation of a new "microflow" model which correctly represents the flow of gases in low permeability core samples. This model is also applied as a correlation for prediction of the equivalent liquid permeability in much the same fashion as the Klinkenberg model, although the new model is substantially more theoretical (and robust) as compared to the Klinkenberg correction model.

Due to the high costs of coring and laboratory analysis, typically cores are acquired in only a few wells. Since most wells are logged, the common practice is to estimate permeability from logs using correlation equations developed from limited core data. Most commonly, permeability is estimated from various well logs using statistical regression. For sandstones, often the logs of permeability can be correlated with porosity, but in carbonates the porosity permeability relationship tends to be much more complex and erratic. For this reason permeability prediction is a critical aspect of reservoir characterization in complex reservoirs such as carbonate reservoirs. In order to improve the permeability estimation in these reservoirs, several statistical regression techniques have already been tested in previous work to correlate permeability with different well logs. It has been shown that statistical regression for data correlation is quite promising in predicting complex reservoirs. But using all the possible well logs to predict permeability is not appropriate because the possibility of spurious correlation increases if you use more well logs. In statistics, variable selection is used to remove unnecessary independent variables and give a better prediction. So we apply variable selection to the permeability prediction procedures in order to further improve permeability estimation. We present three approaches to further improve reservoir permeability prediction based on well logs via data correlation and variable selection in this research. The first is a combination of stepwise algorithm with ACE technique. The second approach is the application of tree regression and cross-validation. The third is multivariate adaptive regression splines. Three methods are tested and compared at two complex carbonate reservoirs in west Texas: Salt Creek Field Unit (SCFU) and North Robertson Unit (NRU). The result of SCFU shows that permeability prediction is improved by applying variable selection to non-parametric regression ACE while tree regression is unable to predict permeability because it can not preserve the continuity of permeability. In NRU, none of these three methods can predict permeability accurately. This is due to the high complexity of NRU reservoir and measurement accuracy. In this reservoir, high permeability is discrete from low permeability, which makes prediction even more difficult. Permeability predictions based on well logs in complex carbonate reservoirs can be further improved by selecting appropriate well logs for data correlation. In comparing the relative predictive performance of the three regression methods, the stepwise with ACE method appears to outperform the other two methods.

Book excerpt: Acquisition of downhole temperature measurements, in addition to production data, is routine in production systems. The temperature measurements, which are currently being used for pressure data correction, are cheap to acquire, accurate and have good resolutions. The answer to the question of how useful these temperature measurements can be, beyond the current utilization for pressure correction, was the goal of this research work. In the first part of this work, a mechanistic multiphysics and multiscale model for thermal transport process in a porous medium was developed, accounting for compressibility and viscous dissipation effects like Joule-Thomson and adiabatic expansion phenomena. To validate the model, a laboratory experiment was designed to allow for a controlled flow of air through a porous core, while measuring the temperature changes at different locations. The data acquired were used to verify the model and perform sensitivity studies, and the results showed functional dependencies of the model on useful reservoir parameters such as porosity, flow velocities and thermal properties of the rock and fluid; and these functional dependencies revealed the potential of temperature data as an additional source of constraining data in temporal and distributed reservoir parameter estimation. In addition, the temperature model was well suited for the application of a number of analytical tools that lead to the extraction of these useful reservoir characteristic information. In the second part, using multiresolution methods based on the second derivative of the Gaussian kernel, temperature measurements were combined with pressure data to improve the identification of transients in data as well as yield better behavioral filtering. Until now, only pressure measurements are used and this has shown to be unreliable. The approach developed here exploited the independence between the pressure and temperature measurements to constrain the estimation of the location of the breakpoints. The third segment of this research exploited the convective nature of thermal transport during flow to characterize near wellbore properties such as the extent of damage around a well (or extent of stimulation). The model lent itself to the application of the semianalytical Operator Splitting decomposition technique and as a result, the solution of the advection component could be separated and used to estimate near-wellbore structures such as damage or stimulation radius and permeability. As temperature measurements are an independent source of measurements, a joint inversion of production data and temporal temperature measurements, taken from multiwell production systems, showed a significant improvement in the reservoir state estimation problem, using state space estimation techniques like the Ensemble Kalman filter. This marked improvement was over the results from current approaches which match only production data. Results showed that introducing temperature improved the resolution of both permeability and porosity fields significantly. The last part of this research dealt with the estimation of flowrate, using only temperature measurements. The temperature model showed a strong functional dependence of temperature on flowrates at high Peclet number. By deconvolution, the advective flow kernel was separated from the diffusion part, and the complete flowrate history reconstructed from this kernel. Results showed that in synthetic and field cases, this extracted flowrate compared well with the true flowrate measurements. The philosophical significance of this work is that low-cost temperature measurements, which are measured routinely in producing wells, are a promising source of additional data for further constraining of reservoir characterization and optimization problems.

An analysis of computer solutions indicates, fortuitously, that the unsteady-state behavior can be reproduced by steady-state density or pressure profiles at successive times. This will demark draw down and the transition to long-term depletion for reservoirs with closed outer boundaries.As an alternative, unsteady-state flow may be presented in terms of volume and surface integrals, and the methodology is fully developed with examples furnished. Among other things, permeability and reserves can be estimated from well flow tests.The foregoing leads to an examination of boundary conditions and degrees of freedom and raises arguments that the classical partial differential equations of mathematical physics may not be allowable representations. Book excerpt: Permeability estimation in tight and shale reservoirs is challenging because little or no flow will occur without hydraulic fracture stimulation. In the pressure falloff following a fracture calibration test (FCT), radial flow after the fracture closure can be used to estimate the reservoir permeability. However, for very low permeability, the time to reach radial flow can exceed any practical duration. This study shows how to use the reservoir pressure to estimate the maximum reservoir permeability when radial flow is missing in the after-closure response. The approach is straightforward and can also be used for buildup tests. It applies whenever the well completion geometry permits radial flow before the pressure response encounters a real well drainage limits. Recent developments have blurred the boundary between fracture calibration test analysis and classic pressure transient analysis. Adapting the log-log diagnostic plot representation to the FCT analysis has made it possible to perform before and after closure analysis on the same diagnostic plot. This paper also proposes a method for diagnosing abnormal leakoff behavior using the log-log diagnostic plot as an alternative method for the traditional G-function plot. The results show the relationship between reservoir permeability and pressure can be used effectively for both estimation of the permeability upper bound when there is no apparent radial flow and for confirming the permeability estimated from apparent late time radial flow. Book excerpt: Estimating oil recovery from shale is a difficult process because organic mudrocks have very low permeability (10nD – 100nD), high kerogen and clay content, a complex pore structure and low porosity (typically less than 10%). In addition, most of the pore sizes in organic mudrocks are within the nanometer range, thus making the process of oil intrusion very difficult to achieve and even harder to measure with certainty. Several methods have been proposed to estimate saturation profiles and capillary pressure curves in conventional rocks, but these methods fail in tight rocks because of the complexities inherent in these types of reservoirs. This report presents a new method that makes use of the pressure decline versus time data to estimate the capillary pressure drainage curve in tight rocks. The method was used to estimate the capillary drainage curve for an Eagle Ford shale and it was also used to determine the shale’s liquid permeability using the early time data of the pressure decline curve. The data obtained during the experiment could be used to estimate fluid saturations as a function of time which can be very useful in determining relative permeability curves in the shale. This new procedure is easy, fast and can be reversed to estimate imbibition curves as well. It can be applied to both conventional and unconventional rocks and it can be useful in EOR experiments to estimate oil recovery as a function of time. Furthermore, this report presents the use of NMR as a useful tool in examining fluid distributions and characterizing fluid types within tight rocks, via a combination of NMR T1 and T2 data
