This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Circus Kings, first published in 1960 and authored by a nephew of the original Ringling Brothers, is a fascinating insider's account of circus life and lore. From humble beginnings in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the Ringling family would go on to create “The Greatest Show on Earth,” delighting audiences across America. Along the way, however, were the behind-the-scenes financial struggles, tragedies such as fires and labor strikes, legal battles, and changing entertainment tastes. Henry Ringling North ran Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from 1936 to 1967, along with his older brother, John. Included are 18 pages of photographs. "Told in the first person with spirit, modesty, and almost stunning candor, . . . [North's] intimate documentary of a restless, quarreling, affectionate, often vulgar, innately genteel, greedy and generous, tricky but honest, vividly imaginative clan comes perilously close to being a tour de force. . . . A wonderful and worthwhile book."--New York Times Book Review "A fascinating, excellently written book for everyone, young or old, who has ever loved a circus."—Herald Tribune Book Review

Slout, entertainment historian par excellence, here provides five fascinating essays on the development of the American traveling circus in the post-Civil War era: "En Route to the Great Eastern Circus" (on the creation of this great show); "The Great Eastern Circus of 1872" (more details about one of P. T. Barnum's rivals); "The Not-So-Great Trans-Atlantic Circus and Menagerie" (how a show failed suddenly in a yellow fever epidemic); "What Goes Up...Comes Down" (how balloning became part of the circus environment); and "The Chicken or the Egg?" (on the first development of the double-ring act pioneered by Barnum and others). These vivid essays, highlighted by numerous contemporaneous excerpts from local newspapers, help bring a long-forgotten era alive again.

Book Synopsis The Contemporary Circus by : Ernest Albrecht
Download or read book The Contemporary Circus written by Ernest Albrecht and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006-10-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fun, energy, and hard work integral to the exciting world of the circus is lovingly captured in The Contemporary Circus: Art of the Spectacular, an in depth look at the creative process of today's circuses. Through numerous personal interviews with directors, designers, composers and performers, author Ernest Albrecht provides a unique inside view of the journey through which the most innovative and exciting modern circuses are produced, from the director and production team to the performers, and from designing the circus to setting it to music. Case studies of specific productions by the Big Apple Circus, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, and Cirque du Soleil illuminate the artistic give-and-take necessary in such a collaborative process, proving the circus a true art form, one as artistic as theatre or dance. A variety of performers such as animal trainers, dancers, and clowns discuss their approach to their individual specialties, and the text concludes with an examination of the world's circuses and schools and their methods for training circus artists. A full photo spread of 30 beautiful photos will help inspire and enlighten artists and fans alike.

Book Synopsis Life Story of the Ringling Brothers by : Alfred Ringling
Download or read book Life Story of the Ringling Brothers written by Alfred Ringling and published by . This book was released on 1900 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the humblest of beginnings the Ringling Brothers built and became equal owners of the greatest amusement enterprise in the world's history. The Ringling brothers were seven American siblings of small-town Wisconsin who transformed their small touring company of performers into one of America's largest circuses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1900 Alfred "Alf" Theodore Ringling (1861-1919) published the book "Life Story of the Ringling Brothers". There is no more striking example of a well-defined ambition reaching out toward a distinctive goal, and attaining it regardless of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and difficulties, than in the story of the Ringling brothers. To be sure, the idea of five boys saying to each other, "We want a circus," wasn't much to create more than a laugh among their playfellows; but for them to determine to have a circus, and the biggest and finest in the world, and then to start getting it, and finish by having it, makes an altogether different story of the five little boys' dreams. There wasn't much in the "wanting to have," but there was a great deal in the "getting." Of course, all this didn't happen- in an hour. There is a great lapse of years between the time when the Ringling boys said, "We want a circus," and the day when the Ringling men could say, "We have a circus," and it is this intervening time between the desire and the realization with which this story deals. It is a wonderful story to write-an adventure in real life, a page in the history of America's great men that teems with lessons of patience, perseverance, and honest effort. It is Caesarian, Napoleonic, Bismarckian in effort, and in accomplishment more than can be said of Alexander. The latter conquered the world, but the Ringling brothers pleased it. Alexander, with all his conquests, could not do this. History records no greater trials than marked the beginning of the career of these great circus men, nor does history record a greater triumph than has rewarded them for their labor.

Book Synopsis The Ordinary Acrobat by : Duncan Wall
Download or read book The Ordinary Acrobat written by Duncan Wall and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of a young man's plunge into the unique and wonderful world of the circus--taking readers deep into circus history and its renaissance as a contemporary art form, and behind the (tented) walls of France's most prestigious circus school. When Duncan Wall visited his first nouveau cirque as a college student in Paris, everything about it--the monochromatic costumes, the acrobat singing Simon and Garfunkel, the juggler reciting Proust--was captivating. Soon he was waiting outside stage doors, eagerly chatting with the stars, and attending circuses two or three nights a week. So great was his enthusiasm that a year later he applied on a whim to the training program at the École Nationale des Arts du Cirque--and was, to his surprise, accepted. Sometimes scary and often funny, The Ordinary Acrobat follows the (occasionally literal) collision of one American novice and a host of gifted international students in a rigorous regimen of tumbling, trapeze, juggling, and clowning. Along the way, Wall introduces readers to all the ambition, beauty, and thrills of the circus's long history: from hardscrabble beginnings to Gilded Age treasures, and from twentieth-century artistic and economic struggles to its brilliant reemergence in the form of contemporary circus (most prominently through Cirque du Soleil). Readers meet figures past--the father of the circus, Philip Astley; the larger-than-life P. T. Barnum--and present, as Wall seeks lessons from innovative masters including juggler Jérôme Thomas and clown André Riot-Sarcey. As Wall learns, not everyone is destined to run away with the circus--but the institution fascinates just the same. Brimming with surprises, outsized personalities, and plenty of charm, The Ordinary Acrobat delivers all the excitement and pleasure of the circus ring itself.
