Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vaccine Therapy and the Opsonic Method of Treatment: A Short Compendium for General Practitioners, Students, and Others The author trusts that the present edition may be as favourably received as its predecessors it has been com pletely rewritten and brought up to date. The attempt has been made so to render available the experience of the past five years by the inclusion of illustrative cases as to enable the general practitioner to approach with confidence a case requiring therapeutical immunization. Accuracy in diagnosis, close clinical observation, and an open mind, are the prime essentials for success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opsonic Method of Treatment: A Short Compendium for General Practitioners, Students, and Others The very kind reception accorded to the First Edition, alike by critics and by those for whose use it was designed, has encouraged the production of this Second Edition. My best thanks are due to friends and reviewers who pointed out several defects and slight mistakes; these, I trust, they will find lacking in the present volume. As regards certain views and theories to which exception was taken, adequate reasons for their revisal have not been demonstrated, and they are retained. So great has been the progress of vaccine therapy during the past year that such enlargement has been necessitated as almost to justify the present volume being regarded as a new book. So conclusive has been the evidence adduced of the favourable influence of vaccine therapy, when employed by skilled hands in suitable cases, that no longer is the help of the immunizator being sought only when all other measures have failed; he is now regarded as a useful adjuvant to such other therapeutic aids as clinical experience has proved appropriate; and at no time has the future of vaccine therapy seemed so bright, and its place in practical surgery and medicine so assured, as it does at present. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New and improved therapies to treat and protect against drug dependence and abuse are urgently needed. In the United States alone about 50 million people regularly smoke tobacco and another 5 million are addicted to other drugs. In a given year, millions of these individuals attemptâ€"with or without medical assistanceâ€"to quit using drugs, though relapse remains the norm. Furthermore, each year several million teenagers start smoking and nearly as many take illicit drugs for the first time. Research is advancing on promising new means of treating drug addiction using immunotherapies and sustained-release (depot) medications. The aim of this research is to develop medications that can block or significantly attenuate the psychoactive effects of such drugs as cocaine, nicotine, heroin, phencyclidine, and methamphetamine for weeks or months at a time. This represents a fundamentally new therapeutic approach that shows promise for treating drug addiction problems that were difficult to treat in the past. Despite their potential benefits, however, several characteristics of these new methods pose distinct behavioral, ethical, legal, and social challenges that require careful scrutiny. Such issues can be considered unique aspects of safety and efficacy that are fundamentally related to the distinct nature and properties of these new types of medications.
