Download or read book Kalki written by Gowri Ramnarayan and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2000-10-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Kalki’ R. Krishnamurthy, one of the pioneering giants of the Tamil press in the tumultuous times of the nationalist movement, was a versatile and prolific writer, inscribing the urgencies of his time in his fiction. This collection brings together the best of Kalki’s short stories, which contain some of his most colourful and enduring characters and themes of Tamil popular fiction of the nineteen thirties and forties. There is in these stories the heady urgency of the freedom struggle, the piquant humour of the parodied Tamil gothic and devastating social satire. In her sensitive translations, Gowri Ramnarayan has succeeded in capturing the nuances of the gently mordant wit that made Kalki’s stories the highlight of the magazines they were originally published in, creating for themselves a dedicated following that flourishes undiminished to this day. Coinciding with the centenary of Kalki’s birth, this volume is a well-deserved tribute to a writer whose breadth of vision and genius imagined and served a new India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1906, Britain's grip on the world was unassailable. Its navy ruled the seas, and its trade empire spanned the globe. But in the small port town of Tuticorin, a lawyer named V.O. Chidambaram Pillai—known to the world as VOC—had a revolutionary idea that would challenge the might of the empire itself. VOC's plan was audacious: to launch the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, a venture that would compete head-on with the British India Steam Navigation Company, the shipping giant that controlled the region. To make his dream a reality, he rallied native traders and patriotic citizens, raising the capital needed to launch his daring enterprise. But the company faced a formidable foe: British mercantile interests and the imperial state both backed its competitor, giving it deep pockets and brazen government backing. VOC and his allies would have to defy overwhelming odds to make their venture a success. Swadeshi Steam is a tale of heroism and defiance in the face of colonial oppression. Based on four decades of research in archives around the world, this inspiring saga showcases the power of one individual's vision to ignite a movement.

Book Synopsis From Cauvery to Neela by : K.N. Lakshminarayanan
Download or read book From Cauvery to Neela written by K.N. Lakshminarayanan and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some six centuries ago, waves of families from one of the most conservative communities of the Cauvery basin took the remarkable decision to migrate across the peninsula to an un-known land. What drove them from the comforts and privileges of life in Thanjavur? What drew them to the wooded banks of a river on the other side of the mountains? What did they find when they arrived? What kind of life did they build? From Cauvery to Neela tells the history of the Tamil agraharams along the Neela River in Palakkad. In crisp and readable prose, the author sketches a community dedicated to scriptur-al tradition and traces its forays over time into politics, science and the arts. Like all perpetual students of human history, he also looks into the future—what does it hold for the ever-changing agraharams and their people?
Download or read book Tamil Brahmans written by C. J. Fuller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tamil Brahmans were a traditional, mainly rural, high-caste elite who have been transformed into a modern, urban, middle-class community since the late nineteenth century. Many Tamil Brahmans today are in professional and managerial occupations, such as engineering and information technology; most of them live in Chennai and other Tamilnadu towns, but others have migrated to the rest of India and overseas. This book, which is mainly based on the authors ethnographic research, describes and analyses this transformation. It is also a study of how and why the Tamil Brahmans privileged status within a hierarchical society has been perpetuated in the face of both a strong anti-Brahman movement in Tamilnadu, and a series of wider social, cultural, economic, political, and ideological changes that might have been expected to undermine their position completely. The major topics discussed include Brahman rural society, urban migration and urban ways of life, education and employment, the position of women, and religion and culture. The Tamil Brahmans class position, including the internal division into the upper- and lower-middle classes, and the process of class reproduction, are examined closely to analyze the congruence between Tamil Brahmanhood and middle classness, which as comparison with other Brahman and non-Brahman groups shows is highly unusual in contemporary India."
