Book excerpt: In 2012 Timothy Blutstein completed his first collection of short stories, "Utter Nonsense; Tales from the Other Side." The pages of Utter Nonsense are filled with dreams, spirits, nature, insanity, couples, gunfights, manhunts, chases, suspense, quelled by tranquil and serene moments. The work is not without dark spirituality and strange forays into the natural and spirit world, where our hero lingers and experiences bizarre and potentially dangerous situations. The title might just refer to the nonsensical, that is, things that cannot be perceived by the five basic senses. These occurrences typically require a sixth sense. At times the personal narrative becomes detailed in its descriptions of altered states of consciousness. When asked about his unique style, the author had this to say: "I used to do a lot of very introspective journal writing where i would write about people and events in my life, delving deeply into sensitive feelings and emotions, The act of writing this kind of stuff was a cathartic process. This led to me writing a series of intensely autobiographical non fiction chronicling the lives of myself and my friends and our adventures. It was only with the practical advice and guidance of author, artist, mentor, and longtime friend Victor Giannini that I made the move into absolute fiction." Blutstein's prose owes much to the tradition of great men of letters; Faulkner, Twain, Salinger, with firm roots in the tradition of Aldous Huxley and Aleister Crowley. One unexpected literary influence is Abraham Lincoln, specifically his account of his ESP and paranormal experiences. A list of Blutstein's myriad influences includes Raymond Chandler, Jack Kerouac, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William S.
