Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FIA is responsible for periodic assessments of the status and trends of the renewable resources of America's forests. Fundamental to the accomplishment of these assessments are the State-by-State resource inventories, which are now conducted on an annual basis. This report summarizes the results, interpretations, and future significance of Utah's annual inventory. The organization and layout of this report begins with a short introduction of FIA's annual inventory system and then a detailed description of its inventory methods. After an overview of the report tables, the bulk of the report is contained in the “Forest Resources” and “Current Issues” and “FIA Indicators” sections, and finishes with a discussion of Utah's Timber Products. The “Forest Resources” section is outlined similar to past periodic reports for ease of comparisons. The “Current Issues” and “FIA Indicators” sections cover topics considered pertinent to Utah's forests relative to the information FIA collects, and points to other related or more in-depth studies and research.

Book excerpt: This report presents a summary of the most recent Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data of Utah’s forests based on field data collected between 2008 and 2017. Many of the results were compared to earlier reports using data from 2000-2005 (DeBlander et al. 2010), and from 2003-2012 (Werstak et al. 2016). Utah’s forest land covers 18 million acres, of which 39 percent (7 million acres) are administered by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of Interior, 35 percent (6.4 million acres) by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and 15 percent (2.7 million acres) are privately owned. The State’s most abundant forest-type group is Pinyon/juniper woodland, which covers 10.5 million acres (58 percent). At 1.1 billion live trees, the Woodland softwoods species group (predominately pinyon and juniper species) is the most common by number of live trees (5.0 inches or greater in diameter), followed by the Cottonwood and aspen species group (231 million live trees). Woodland softwoods make up about 45 percent (6.7 billion cubic feet) of the State’s total live tree volume and 46 percent (121 million tons) of the biomass. Utah’s forests contain 15 billion cubic feet of net volume in trees 5.0 inches in diameter and larger with an average annual mortality of trees 5.0 inches in diameter or larger totaling 250 million trees per year, and a negative average annual net growth of 41 million trees per year. This report includes descriptive highlights and tables of area, number of trees, biomass, volume, growth, mortality, and removals, as well as trends based on past inventories on forest land. Most sections and tables are organized by forest type or forest-type group, tree species group, diameter class, or owner group.

Book excerpt: Southwestern piñon-juniper and juniper woodlands cover large areas of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and adjacent Colorado. Ponderosa pine forests are the most common timberland in the Southwest. All three ecosystems provide a variety of natural resources and economic benefits to the region. There are different perceptions of desired conditions. Public and private land managers have adapted research results and their observations and experiences to manage these ecosystems for multiresource benefits. Ways to mitigate the threat of wildfires is a major management issue for these ecosystems, and the wide-spread piñon mortality related to drought and the bark beetle infestation has heightened concerns among managers and the general public. In addition, the impacts of climate change on these ecosystems are a growing concern. As a step in bringing research and management together to answer some of these questions, workshops concerned with the ecology, management, and restoration of piñon-juniper and ponderosa pine ecosystems were held in St. George, Utah in 2005 and in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2006. The combined proceedings from these two workshops contain papers, extended abstracts, and abstracts based on oral and poster presentations. Some topics included forest and woodland restoration treatments and their impacts on fuels, wildlife, and other ecosystem components, watershed management, insect infestations and drought, wood utilization, landscape changes, basic ecology, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth could easily be Utah’s most interesting, complex century, yet popular ideas of what is history seem mired in the nineteenth. One reason may be the lack of readily available writing on more recent Utah history. This collection of essays shifts historical focus forward to the twentieth, which began and ended with questions of Utah’s fit with the rest of the nation. In between was an extended period of getting acquainted in an uneasy but necessary marriage, which was complicated by the push of economic development and pull of traditional culture, demand for natural resources from a fragile and scenic environment, and questions of who governs and how, who gets a vote, and who controls what is done on and to the contested public lands. Outside trade and a tourist economy increasingly challenged and fed an insular society. Activists left and right declaimed constitutional liberties while Utah’s Native Americans become the last enfranchised in the nation. Proud contributions to national wars contrasted with denial of deep dependence on federal money; the skepticism of provocative writers, with boosters eager for growth; and reflexive patriotism somehow bonded to ingrained distrust of federal government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the relationship between environmental injustice and the exploitation of working-class people. Twelve scholars from the fields of environmental humanities and the humanistic social sciences explore connections between the current and unprecedented rise of environmental degradation, economic inequality, and widespread social injustice in the United States and Canada. The authors challenge prevailing cultural narratives that separate ecological and human health from the impacts of modern industrial capitalism. Essay themes range from how human survival is linked to nature to how the use and abuse of nature benefit the wealthy elite at the expense of working-class people and the working poor as well as how climate change will affect cultures deeply rooted in the land. Ultimately, Working on Earth calls for a working-class ecology as an integral part of achieving just and sustainable human development.
