They were eating and drinking healthy according to her lights. When I asked her about their diet she said very airy fairly, "Oh, I give them plenty of fruit, vegetables, dairy products, and organic food." "And what do they drink?" I asked. "You know, that fresh fruit juice, Tropicana pure premium, they really love orange and mixed fruit. They have a whole carton full, each day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also they cannot do without coffee."Fresh fruit juice and six and eight-year-old kids on coffee! Oh my ears and whiskers!I am sorry to say but I goggled like a demented goldfish. When she told me that she did not know what buttermilk was because she could not find it on her supermarket shelf. I having lived a lifestyle where buttermilk was an integral part of our childhoods, especially in the summer could not believe that there were lifestyles and diets, in the world, where mothers did not give their children milk or buttermilk, especially when they were growing up. This particular Mom was giving her kids a very sensible organic food diet, but was killing them with liquids made up of chemical preservatives and synthetic concentrates. She was also poisoning their system with caffeine. These soft drinks had absolutely no nutritive value. I managed to glance into her fridge. It was full of diet soft drinks, colas, lemon tea, cold coffee and other thirst quenchers. Well, my friends, all of those who are accustomed to drinking bottles and bottles full of cold drinks, and still wonder why their health is deteriorating, this book is for you. I come not to praise these artificial cold drinks but to bury them.

Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Ancient Water Drinking Rules Hydrotherapy Use of Water Down the Ages Benefits of a Cold Water Bath Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction This book is for all of those people who know that, yes, water has been used since ancient times to cure diseases permanently, and also have heard something about hydrotherapy, which means treatment with the use of water. I am going to touch upon the subject of hydrotherapy, without going into too much of a detail, in this book, which is going to be confined to how water can be used as a curative for a number of diseases and also to prevent them from occurring in your body. You are going to get to know how just that glassful of water - pure water, and definitely not bottled and mineral water, or perhaps that water which has been subjected to extensive additions of chlorine, these 21st-century modern innovations do not work - is going to keep you healthy, and also get rid of all the toxins in your body.

Anybody with a science background can tell me that the body is badly dehydrated, even in winter. This is the truth, because in winter, we definitely do not drink as many liquids as we should, because we think that we are not thirsty and the body does not need all that liquid intake. So we just manage to do with soups, and if you are a tea and coffee drinker, that is how you get your daily dose of liquids; or perhaps alcohol, which gives you an illusion of warmth, especially on a cold winters evening.

Book excerpt: Integration of complementary and alternative medicine therapies (CAM) with conventional medicine is occurring in hospitals and physicians offices, health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are covering CAM therapies, insurance coverage for CAM is increasing, and integrative medicine centers and clinics are being established, many with close ties to medical schools and teaching hospitals. In determining what care to provide, the goal should be comprehensive care that uses the best scientific evidence available regarding benefits and harm, encourages a focus on healing, recognizes the importance of compassion and caring, emphasizes the centrality of relationship-based care, encourages patients to share in decision making about therapeutic options, and promotes choices in care that can include complementary therapies where appropriate. Numerous approaches to delivering integrative medicine have evolved. Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the United States identifies an urgent need for health systems research that focuses on identifying the elements of these models, the outcomes of care delivered in these models, and whether these models are cost-effective when compared to conventional practice settings. It outlines areas of research in convention and CAM therapies, ways of integrating these therapies, development of curriculum that provides further education to health professionals, and an amendment of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act to improve quality, accurate labeling, research into use of supplements, incentives for privately funded research into their efficacy, and consumer protection against all potential hazards.

The result is an impressive body of research, combining a thorough text with good pictorial coverage --a unique approach to a subject that will be of widespread interest. This timely volume comes just as the age-old regional knowledge of the remedies naturally available--encapsulated in an oral tradition carrying hundreds of years of empirical knowledge--is being allowed to drift from contemporary consciousness, replaced by a new blind faith in the remedies widely promoted by the major pharmaceutical companies.
