Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to explore the impact of socio-economic characteristics of drivers on travel behavior and on vehicular emissions of various air pollutants using microscopic data. My starting dataset was collected by SCAG in 2001 and 2002 during their post 2000 Census Regional Travel Survey. Of the 16,939 households who answered the survey, 297 provided self-reported 24-hour travel diary data and detailed GPS data for their vehicles, which was instrumented for SCAG's survey. After selecting 100 out of these 297 households based on their socio-economic characteristics and the completeness of their answers, I relied on 2003 imagery in Google Earth to match diary and GPS data. An extensive clean-up of this dataset yielded a sample of 701 trips, for which I estimated emissions of CO, CO2, NOx, HC, PM10, and PM2.5 using OpMode in EPA's MOVES2010 (Motor Vehicle Emissions Simulator) from second-by-second GPS travel data. A statistical analysis of the results reveals that men make longer trips than women, although the difference in their emission rates is not statistically significant. Moreover, people 60 or older are the greenest drivers: their driving patterns are more environmentally benign because they accelerate/decelerate less than younger people. Finally, I found significant differences in emission rates based on different household income levels.

The complete reliance on conventional datum collection techniques, that is, face-to-face interview, computer-assisted telephone/web/personal interview, postal survey and email has a number of big drawbacks, including (1) high burden on respondents, thus high non-response rate, (2) inclusion of one-day data per person, (3) lack of reliability due to human memory limits and habit of rounding travel time, (4) high cost with intensive labor and (5) big time gap between periodic household travel surveys not to mention the difficulties in combining and harmonizing data of surveys in different regions or countries. The unlimited use of Global Positioning System (GPS) has opened up great opportunities for dealing with the problem of poor data. GPS logs are objective, numerous, continuous, detailed and accurate spatiotemporally. Yet, positioning information itself is not eligible for analysis due to the lack of trip characteristics. This deficiency has induced the substantial development of two new research fields that are involved in imputing transportation modes and trip purposes from GPS data, respectively. On-board devices were initially utilized to take advantage of electricity. Afterwards, lightweight, small and wearable personal devices have been developed to collect data at person level, which emphasized the need of detecting trip modes. Currently, smartphone is the most preferred devices to gather both logs and their corresponding so-called ground truth. Detections of mode and purpose are essential steps prior to do any travel behavior analyses (e.g. mode choice or time spending in activities). In this sense, the performances of mode and purpose inference algorithms determine the potential of employing GPS-based surveys as a supplement and even an entire alternative to conventional techniques. In the literature, there are three research gaps related to imputation algorithms and GPS-assisted surveys. The first is the great focus of investigations in well-structured urban areas of developed countries and occasionally in China. Therefore, the use of GPS in mobility surveys in cities of developing countries has been questionable. The others are consequences of the first limitation. Second, the list of mode detection encompasses walk, bike, transit and car but not motorcycle that is one of the main means in emerging countries. Last, purpose imputation has been implemented very frequently with the support of GIS data; however, GIS data are not available and good enough everywhere. Lack of reasonable solutions to derive purposes from GPS data without GIS data is a gap. This thesis aims at seeking answers to three mentioned-above existing questions by building both mode and purpose inference models. Two data sets were used. The first was collected in Rhone-Alpes, France by dedicated device whilst the second was gathered in Hanoi, Vietnam by smartphone. Based on prediction results, the discussions and recommendations for enhancing the quality of GPS-based surveys in general and for developing countries in particular have been proposed.

Book excerpt: This research develops a framework to estimate the effective sample size of Global Positioning System (GPS) based panel surveys in urban travel behavior studies for a variety of planning purposes. Recent advances in GPS monitoring technologies have made it possible to implement panel surveys with lengths of weeks, months or even years. The many advantageous features of GPS-based panel surveys make such surveys attractive for travel behavior studies, but the higher cost of such surveys compared to conventional one-day or two-day paper diary surveys requires scrutiny at the sample size planning stage to ensure cost-effectiveness. The sample size analysis in this dissertation focuses on three major aspects in travel behavior studies: 1) to obtain reliable means for key travel behavior variables, 2) to conduct regression analysis on key travel behavior variables against explanatory variables such as demographic characteristics and seasonal factors, and 3) to examine impacts of a policy measure on travel behavior through before-and-after studies. The sample size analyses in this dissertation are based on the GPS data collected in the multi-year Commute Atlanta study. The sample size analysis with regard to obtaining reliable means for key travel behavior variables utilizes Monte Carlo re-sampling techniques to assess the trend of means against various sample size and survey length combinations. The basis for the framework and methods of sample size estimation related to regression analysis and before-and-after studies are derived from various sample size procedures based on the generalized estimating equation (GEE) method. These sample size procedures have been proposed for longitudinal studies in biomedical research. This dissertation adapts these procedures to the design of panel surveys for urban travel behavior studies with the information made available from the Commute Atlanta study.

Book excerpt: A clear understanding on the impact of the built environment on travel behavior is crucial for land use and transport planning. However, previous land use-transport studies are largely constrained to a single individual in the household and a single long-term choice (i.e. residential location). The individual was commonly used as the unit of analysis, while both long-term location/mobility choices (residential location, work location and car ownership) and daily travel behaviors could be household level decisions. Besides, previous land use-transport research usually assumed the residential location as a decision that independent with the work location, while these two location choices may be associated with each other. Ignoring intra-household interactions in travel decisions and the interdependencies between different long-term choices would lead to an incomplete understanding on the land use-transport relationship. This thesis fills these research gaps by providing a new household perspective to rethink and reexamine the relationships among the built environment, travel attitudes, and travel behavior. It extends the“individual-based”analytical framework of land use-transport research to a broader“household-based”one. Specifically, this proposed analytical framework takes the household as the basic unit of analysis, and considers interactions among different household members as well as different long-term choices. This research challenges the underlying assumptions of existing land use-transport research, and has the potential to guide the research design and model specification of future travel behavior studies. Three empirical studies were conducted to examine the proposed household-based research framework. Data was derived from a household activity-travel diary survey in 2016 in Beijing, China. The results of empirical studies indicate that: Self-selection exists in different long-term choices, including residential location, work location, commuting distance and car ownership; Travel attitudes of different household members play different roles in self-selections regarding these long-term choices; The partner's travel attitudes affect an individual's long-term choices and travel behaviors simultaneously, thereby could be additional sources of the self-selection effect; The built environment has indirect impacts on the male head’s travel behaviors through the female head’s travel choices; Besides, residential location has indirect impacts on travel behavior though the work location choice, and vice versa. In general, this dissertation confirms the significance and necessity of investigating the impact of the built environment on travel behavior from a household-based perspective. Findings in this dissertation contribute to a better understanding on the process and mechanism of household members' long-term and short-term travel choices, and further both the direct and indirect impacts of the built environment on travel behavior.

Book excerpt: Over the last few years, as with many other fields, the transportation discipline has been swept by the big data revolution. The growth in data is from a variety of sources including traffic detectors, remote sensors, mobile devices, smart card data, global positioning system (GPS), and survey datasets among others. This revolution has not only brought about tremendous opportunities for conducting interesting data driven analysis for understanding activity-travel behavior, it has also highlighted challenges associated with using traditional analytical methods to analyze these large datasets. To this end, this study first introduced a novel new Divide and Combine based approach to estimating Mixture Markov models for analyzing large categorical time series data. The validity of this approach is demonstrated using a simulation study. Further, the feasibility and applicability is highlighted by conducting a clustering analysis of large activity-travel sequences using multiyear travel survey datasets. The results suggest that travel patterns of individuals over the last three decades can be categorized into three types of travel patterns. Results also provide evidence in support of recent claims about different generational cohorts and their activity-travel behaviors. The second part of this study utilizes the method developed in the first study to analyze intra-day activity-travel behavior of the elderly (over 65 years old) using data from five waves of National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). By characterizing daily activity-travel behavior as categorical time series to incorporate timing and schedule of different activity-travel episodes jointly, three segments of elderly were identified based on their unique activity-travel patterns by applying the proposed Divide and Combine based approach. The study offered into the activity-travel characteristics of the elderly. The third part of this study develops a time-varying mixture Markov model framework for analyzing dynamics in activity-travel behaviors along with a new estimation approach. The model and estimation approach are demonstrated by analyzing commute mode choice behavior of UK residents from 1991 to 2016. The results suggest that commute mode choice of UK residents can be categorized into two types of patterns. Results also indicate that probabilities of switching from one mode to other change over time.
