Book excerpt: This case study is based on research conducted in the context of technology-mediated business meetings. It discusses the use of video recordings from authentic meetings in a multinational workplace as data and the methodological framework of multimodal conversation analysis (CA). Multimodal CA is a qualitative, bottom-up approach and a research method that places observation of interactional events and the analysis of social actions, such as talk, gestures, facial expressions, and body movement, at the core of the investigation. The aim of this case study is to present a practical approach to CA and discuss the details of using it to study business professionals' practices in real-world environments. The purpose is to reflect on the research process as a whole and to describe the methodological, ethical, and practical decisions one must make along the way. The case study addresses matters and issues related to the research design and fieldwork and provides the reader with the knowledge and guidelines needed to plan and execute a study that focuses on an authentic business setting.
