Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of CHARME 2001, the Eleventh Advanced Research Working Conference on Correct Hardware Design and Veri?cation Methods. CHARME 2001 is the 11th in a series of working conferences devoted to the development and use of leading-edge formal techniques and tools for the design and veri?cation of hardware and hardware-like systems. Previous events in the ‘CHARME’ series were held in Bad Herrenalb (1999), Montreal (1997), Frankfurt (1995), Arles (1993), and Torino (1991). This series of meetings has been organized in cooperation with IFIP WG 10.5 and WG 10.2. Prior meetings, stretching backto the earliest days of formal hardware veri?cation, were held under various names in Miami (1990), Leuven (1989), Glasgow (1988), Grenoble (1986), Edinburgh (1985), and Darmstadt (1984). The convention is now well-established whereby the European CHARME conference alternates with its biennial counterpart, the International Conference on Formal Methods in Computer-Aided Design (FMCAD), which is held on even-numbered years in the USA. The conference tookplace during 4–7 September 2001 at the Institute for System Level Integration in Livingston, Scotland. It was co-hosted by the - stitute and the Department of Computing Science of Glasgow University and co-sponsored by the IFIP TC10/WG10.5 Working Group on Design and En- neering of Electronic Systems. CHARME 2001 also included a scienti?c session and social program held jointly with the 14th International Conference on Th- rem Proving in Higher Order Logics (TPHOLs), which was co-located in nearby Edinburgh.

Book excerpt: This book is based on material from current research projects and cooperations and from a recent workshop in the area of Knowledge Base Management Systems. It contains 25 revised papers and related discussions that concentrate on the integration of Database Technology (deductive databases, extended relational technology, object-oriented systems) and Artificial Intelligence (in particular logic programming and knowledge representation). The emphasis of the book is on the integration of DB/AI technology required for knowledge Base Management Systems. The book isolates major conceptual contributions, systems extensions, and reseach directions that lead towards that goal. This book is a European counterpart to another volume in the Topics in Information Systems Series, 'On Knowledge Base Management Systems', resulting from a North American workshop and edited by M. Brodie and J. Mylopoulos, which concentrates on theoretical results and the more abstract levels of Knowledge Base Management.

Book excerpt: The second half of this century will remain as the era of proliferation of electronic computers. They did exist before, but they were mechanical. During next century they may perform other mutations to become optical or molecular or even biological. Actually, all these aspects are only fancy dresses put on mathematical machines. This was always recognized to be true in the domain of software, where "machine" or "high level" languages are more or less rigourous, but immaterial, variations of the universaly accepted mathematical language aimed at specifying elementary operations, functions, algorithms and processes. But even a mathematical machine needs a physical support, and this is what hardware is all about. The invention of hardware description languages (HDL's) in the early 60's, was an attempt to stay longer at an abstract level in the design process and to push the stage of physical implementation up to the moment when no more technology independant decisions can be taken. It was also an answer to the continuous, exponential growth of complexity of systems to be designed. This problem is common to hardware and software and may explain why the syntax of hardware description languages has followed, with a reasonable delay of ten years, the evolution of the programming languages: at the end of the 60's they were" Algol like" , a decade later "Pascal like" and now they are "C or ADA-like". They have also integrated the new concepts of advanced software specification languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VLSI synthesis is a subject that is moving rapidly from the research laboratory into the industrial environment, and it is generally accepted that synthesis will gradually become the dominant design technique, surpassing conventional manual techniques. This book provides a timely overview on the various systems for logical and architectural synthesis for VLSI. It discusses the algorithms and techniques necessary for a synthesis system that is competitive with current design techniques for integrated circuits. The book covers both low-level logic synthesis techniques and higher-level architectural techniques, both of which are increasing in practical importance, since they will form the basis of the next generation of CAD software for integrated circuits. Three main topics are addressed: The first concerns two-level and multi-level synthesis. It includes PLA and PAL implementation as well as standard cell and compiled cell based synthesis. The second concerns controller synthesis with emphasis on optimisation methods. The third deals with high level synthesis (resource allocation, scheduling) as applied to DSP systems and processors consisting of controllers and data paths.

Book excerpt: VLSI Specification, Verification and Synthesis Proceedings of a workshop held in Calgary from 12-16 January 1987. The collection of papers in this book represents some of the discussions and presentations at a workshop on hardware verification held in Calgary, January 12-16 1987. The thrust of the workshop was to give the floor to a few leading researchers involved in the use of formal approaches to VLSI design, and provide them ample time to develop not only their latest ideas but also the evolution of these ideas. In contrast to simulation, where the objective is to assist in detecting errors in system behavior in the case of some selected inputs, the intent of hardware verification is to formally prove that a chip design meets a specification of its intended behavior (for all acceptable inputs). There are several important applications where formal verification of designs may be argued to be cost-effective. Examples include hardware components used in "safety critical" applications such as flight control, industrial plants, and medical life-support systems (such as pacemakers). The problems are of such magnitude in certain defense applications that the UK Ministry of Defense feels it cannot rely on commercial chips and has embarked on a program of producing formally verified chips to its own specification. Hospital, civil aviation, and transport boards in the UK will also use these chips. A second application domain for verification is afforded by industry where specific chips may be used in high volume or be remotely placed.

Book excerpt: This Concise Encyclopedia of Software Engineering is intended to provide compact coverage of the knowledge relevant to the practicing software engineer. The content has been chosen to provide an introduction to the theory and techniques relevant to the software of a broad class of computer applications. It is supported by examples of particular applications and their enabling technologies. This Encyclopedia will be of value to new practitioners who need a concise overview and established practitioners who need to read about the "penumbra" surrounding their own specialities. It will also be useful to professionals from other disciplines who need to gain some understanding of the various aspects of software engineering which underpin complex information and control systems, and the thinking behind them.

Book excerpt: Parallel Processing Applications for Jet Engine Control is a volume in the new Advances in Industrial Control series, edited by Professor M.J. Grimble and Dr. M.A. Johnson of the Industrial Control Unit, University of Strathclyde. The book describes the mapping and load balancing of gas turbine engine and controller simulations onto arrays of transputers. It compares the operating system for transputers and the Uniform System upon the Butterfly Plus computer. The problem of applying formal methods to parallel asychronous processors is addressed, implementing novel fault tolerant systems to meet real-time flight control requirements. The book presents real-time closed-loop results highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of Occam and the transputer. Readers will find that this book provides valuable material for researchers in both academia and the aerospace industry.
