Book excerpt: This study investigated 18 discrete demographic, academic, and experiential learner entry characteristics of graduates from a selected vocational nursing program to determine which characteristics were relevant in predicting success on the state licensure examination, NCLEX-PN. An analysis of these characteristics contributed to the development of a model designed to more effectively counsel and advise prospective vocational nursing students in community college settings. The population for this study consisted of students who graduated from the licensed vocational nursing program at Kingwood College during a four-year period, from the nine classes beginning January 1997 through January 2001. During this time, there were 240 graduates but one file was eliminated because of incomplete information; thus the resulting study size was reduced to 239. This retrospective study utilized archival data collected from academic records. Chi square analysis suggested statistical significance between six of the independent variables studied and the single dependent variable of successfully passing the NCLEX-PN on the first attempt. The six independent variables that demonstrated statistical significance were ethnicity, method of high school completion, pre-nursing grade point average, reading assessment score on the TASP Test, developmental reading coursework, and developmental writing coursework. Additional analysis through logistic regression suggested that the independent variables of ethnicity, method of high school completion, pre-nursing grade point average, and reading assessment score on the TASP Test were the best combination of predictive measures for passing the NCLEX-PN on the first attempt.

Book excerpt: Graduates of pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing programs must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, or NCLEX-RN®. First-time pass rates are the primary quality indicator for nursing programs. National pass rates are approximately 90% and schools falling below 85% face funding and accreditation risks. Schools of nursing have adopted stringent admission and progression policies based on predictors of licensure success. However, there is a gap in the current body of evidence associated with predictors of NCLEX-RN® failure. Nursing programs using predictors of success for admission and progression decisions are shutting the door of opportunity on students who could be successful if given the opportunity. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a model that predicts NCLEX-RN® failure to guide nursing program policy and intervention for at-risk nursing students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational retrospective study was to examine the effectiveness of an admission tool in an eastern Kentucky community college at predicting success in a licensed practical nursing program. Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory provided a framework to guide inquiry into the question "Are the criteria being used in this eastern Kentucky community college an effective indicator of student success, as defined by completing the program and meeting the academic criteria to sit for the NCLEX-PN licensing examination?" Student records were examined retrospectively. A multiple regression analysis was performed to determine which portions of the tool showed the strongest relationship to success. A random sample of 60 students was used. This study concluded that the admission tool used in this practical nursing program seemed to be an effective indicator of student success on the NCLEX-PN, but did not select students likely to pass the program effectively enough.

Book excerpt: Nursing is one of the most frequently chosen programs by those entering postsecondary institutions in preparation for a career. This is in part due to the job opportunities available, interest in healthcare, and a pending shortage of nurses in healthcare. One strategy for meeting this shortage is the career pathway which encompasses the concept of lifelong learning and provides a mechanism for advancement of nurses along a continuum. Regardless of the level that a student enters the nursing education continuum, failure on the national licensure exam becomes a burden to both graduates and faculty in time and resources expended. Whereas many empirical research studies have been conducted related to the registered nurse, few studies have been done related to the practical nurse. Therefore, this research study addresses the issue of background and curricular variables which predict success on the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and logistic regression were used to determine the predictive value of the demographic (age, gender, race) and admission requirements (math, reading); curriculum variables (pre-requisite, foundation, specialty, and advanced nursing courses); and Exit Comprehensive Exam on NCLEX-PN status. The sample consisted of 411 students from 14 practical nursing programs within ten Kentucky Community and Technical Colleges. Independent Sample t Tests, Chi-square, and Correlation suggested statistically significant relationships/differences for all variables with the exception of gender, the mathematics admission exam, and number of attempts on the exit examination. The results of the logistic regression model indicated that age (p = .002) and the Exit Comprehensive Exam (p = .035) made a significant contribution to prediction of success on the NCLEX-PN on the first attempt. The demographic (gender, race); admission (math, reading); curricular, (pre-requisite, foundation, specialty, and advanced nursing courses); and mediating (number of attempts on the Exit Comprehensive Exam) variables were not significant predictors in the logistic model. These results may be used as an advisement tool for at-risk students to direct them toward interventions and resources to increase success on the NCLEX-PN.

Book excerpt: This study compared application data for an undergraduate nursing program at a public health science center university in the southeast. The study covered five years of application cohorts from 2009 to 2014 from admission through graduation. The application data analyzed two dependent variables to predict students likely to achieve success in the nursing program. These two variables to measures success were: the ability of the admitted student to successfully achieve graduation requirements; and those graduates that were able to pass the national nursing certification exam on the first attempt. The application data was assessed to determine if a relationship existed between the data used to select students for admission and the success outcomes from an undergraduate nursing program. The application data was analyzed using a logistic regression and decision tree model to explore the relationship between the variables. The scores provided by the faculty members' overall assessment of the entire application file was significant in three of the four logistic regression models and race was significant in the national certification logistic regression model. A similar finding resulted with scores provided by the faculty members' overall assessment of the entire application file placed as the first node in three of the four decision tree models, and race placed as the first node in the national certification exam decision tree model. The study found that the data provided by faculty members in the admission process yielded results with the highest predictability related to student success in a nursing program.

This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this project was to improve the progression of nursing students admitted as juniors through their academic upper level nursing courses at Salisbury University (SU) until successful completion of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This goal included: increasing the number of graduating seniors who successfully pass the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt and decreasing the number of junior and senior level students lost to attrition either due to unsatisfactory grades in nursing courses or a change in their career plans. According to the literature many programs of nursing education are also searching for similar improvement strategies. Admissions criteria and NCLEX-RN 'predictors' are unique to each program and actively sought by each program. This study incorporated a mixed methodology including institutional document review, web site review of other nursing programs, pre- and post-NCLEX-RN student surveys, faculty surveys, statistical analysis of data from one cohort of graduate nurses, and interviews with unsuccessful students. The convenience sample used one graduating class of traditional baccalaureate first-degree students (N=62). Data collection documented the reaction of tightening admissions criteria and policies due to the increasing number of applicants. Admissions standards and progression requirements were reviewed and compared to other programs. Specific courses reviewed included Pathophysiology and Pharmacology. Policies discussed included a guaranteed seat, criminal background checks, grade point averages (GPAs), and pre-screening tests. Recommendations were made concerning the elimination of guaranteed seats, maintaining competitive admissions, the raising of admissions standards, changes to pre-requisites, regular course review, and the need for a standardized admissions test. Statistical analysis of data using logistic regression was used due to the dichotomous variables often encountered in nursing and education such as lived - died or passed - failed. It showed that a combination of GPA, the number of Cs in prerequisites, and the Pathophysiology grade were the best pre-nursing combination predicting 95% NCLEX-RN passes and 42.9% failures. Final exam grades in nursing theory courses such as adult medical-surgical, maternity, pediatrics, and mental health nursing predicted 92.5% passes and 50% failures. As reported by others, success can be accurately predicted, but predicting failure remains elusive. Standardized exit tests appear to be the better 'predictor' based on the literature and the recommendation for their use was endorsed. Lastly, the development of a mandatory remedial intervention program for all identified 'at-risk' students was recommended.
