This book was released on 2001 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrient pollution may perhaps be one of the oldest water quality problems and has recently been considered as one of the greatest threats to estuarine and coastal waters. Excessive nutrient loads have had a vast array of impacts on estuarine and coastal ecosystems globally. Direct negative effects include: shading out of benthic plant communities, hypoxia and anoxia due to increased biological oxygen demand, compositional change in plant and fauna! community structure and increased occurrences of harmful algal blooms. This has lead to decreased biodiversity, habitat, fisheries, tourism and aesthetics. So far environmental managers have had to rely on a posteriori assessments of the status of nutrient pollution, using indicators such as taxonomic shifts and changes in biological abundance, which have already occurred. By the time nutrient pollution is detected, restoration of habitats is costly and sometimes no longer an option. Therefore, there is a need for management tools to assess sources of nutrient loads before damage to estuarine and coastal ecosystems progresses beyond recovery. Early work using stable isotopes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in groundwater samples demonstrated the potential for using stable isotopes to identify anthropogenic sources of nitrogen. These studies revealed that nitrogen sources such as fertilizers, soil organic nitrogen and wastewater nitrogen have isotopically distinct signatures that could be used to assess anthropogenic nitrogen contributions. Therefore, application of nitrogen stable isotope methods could potentially provide information on the anthropogenic nitrogen sources stimulating nutrient pollution in estuarine and coastal waters. However, when I assessed this approach for application, two sources of errors became apparent. First, laboratory isolation of dissolved inorganic nitrate from seawater delivered results depleted in 15N relative to the standard used to assess the method. Second, isotopic fractionation associated with nitrogen cycle processes complicates usage of an isotopic mass balance to solve for the nitrogen source and its fractional contribution based on isotopic data alone. As a result, isotopic analysis alone of dissolved inorganic nitrogen to determine anthropogenic sources of nutrient loads to estuarine and coastal waters is not a practical approach to obtain management information concerning nutrient pollution.

Book excerpt: This book has a very strong practical orientation, telling readers what methodologies are available using stable isotopes, how studies should be designed and executed to maximise effectiveness and incisiveness in terms of data obtained and outcomes in terms of understanding events and processes in plant and ecosystem functioning. The readership is very much aimed toward postgraduates with good knowledge of general biological principles and underlying chemical and physical processes. Pre-existing knowledge of or experience in application and assay of stable isotopes is not required. The stable isotope research field is one of the most rapidly growing areas of ecophysiology and techniques using stable isotopes comprise an ever increasing component of research programs of university postgraduates and a wide range of agencies conducting environmental monitoring and rehabilitation programs. The book is tailor-made for such an audience.

Book excerpt: "This publication provides an overview of conventional and isotopic methods available for measuring and modelling soil carbon dynamics. It includes information on the use of carbon isotopes in soil and plant research, including both theoretical and practical aspects of nuclear and radioisotope tracer techniques for in situ glasshouse and field labelling techniques to assess soil organic carbon turnover and sequestration, and provides up-to-date information on topics related to soil carbon sequestration and stabilization in agroecosystems. With its focus on practical application of radiotracer and stable isotope tracer techniques, it will be particularly useful for university and national research scientists working to improve soil organic matter management and conservation in agricultural systems."--Publisher's description.

The objective of the symposium was to evaluate progress in the use of stable isotopes to examine various aspects of soil fertility and plant nutrition and some environmental problems, the potential and limitations of existing methods, and possibilities for further development. The meeting focused on the site level rather than the landscape level and, more specifically, on soil-plant relations, although landscape environmental aspects were also examined. The underlying theme was an assessment of current and possible future approaches to two problems of concern: how to increase or sustain productivity with minimum inputs, and how to limit environmental damage due to inappropriate land management and to industry.
