Book excerpt: The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) is a device that is used for the estimation of in situ compaction quality of constructed subgrades and embankments. It is a relatively inexpensive, light-weight and easy to use device that measures the dynamic penetration resistance of the compacted soil, from which an estimate of soil strength and stiffness characteristics can be made. Owing to its ease of use, many DOTs in the U.S. have employed the DCP in their compaction quality control procedures, and over the past few decades, extensive research has been carried out on the development of correlations between the results of the DCP test and the results of strength and stiffness tests performed on compacted soils (e.g., California bearing ratio, and resilient modulus)The objectives of this research are to refine DCP-based quality assurance and quality control correlations for compaction quality control developed by previous research studies carried out at Purdue for the Indiana Department of Transportation, especially focusing on (1) grouping of the soils based on their mechanical response to the DCP loading, and (2) limiting the in situ moisture range of the soils used for development of correlations within -2% of the optimum moisture content of the tested soil. The factors outlined above are studied, and in particular, soil grouping is examined critically. The AASHTO ('A-based') classification employed previously for classification of soils is replaced with a new classification criteria specifically developed for the DCP test. Soils are grouped into one of the two categories of coarse-grained or fine-grained soils on the basis of the size of the dominant particle in the soil. The criteria developed for the classification of soil into one of these two categories is based on index properties of the soil, such as the standard Proctor maximum dry density, optimum moisture content, plasticity index (PI) and fines content.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide to pavement design and materials With innovations ranging from the advent of SuperpaveTM, the data generated by the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) project, to the recent release of the Mechanistic-Empirical pavement design guide developed under NCHRP Study 1-37A, the field of pavement engineering is experiencing significant development. Pavement Design and Materials is a practical reference for both students and practicing engineers that explores all the aspects of pavement engineering, including materials, analysis, design, evaluation, and economic analysis. Historically, numerous techniques have been applied by a multitude of jurisdictions dealing with roadway pavements. This book focuses on the best-established, currently applicable techniques available. Pavement Design and Materials offers complete coverage of: The characterization of traffic input The characterization of pavement bases/subgrades and aggregates Asphalt binder and asphalt concrete characterization Portland cement and concrete characterization Analysis of flexible and rigid pavements Pavement evaluation Environmental effects on pavements The design of flexible and rigid pavements Pavement rehabilitation Economic analysis of alternative pavement designs The coverage is accompanied by suggestions for software for implementing various analytical techniques described in these chapters. These tools are easily accessible through the book’s companion Web site, which is constantly updated to ensure that the reader finds the most up-to-date software available.

Book excerpt: The Dynaflect and the Falling Weight Deflectometer are commonly used for nondestructive testing of pavements. Although in both cases a dynamic load is imparted, the determination of the mechanical properties of the pavement is normally performed by using static analyses. In this study, the displacements obtained from dynamic analyses are compared to those provided by conventional static programs when the subbase is a homogeneous soil stratum of finite depth, resting on a much stiffer rock-like material and when the soil properties increase smoothly with depth, as is often the case.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to determine how to incorporate the increase in stiffness of stabilized subgrade in the design of (Flexible?) pavement, and to examine the longevity of subgrade stabilization. Pavement sites that included stabilized subgrade across the state of Ohio were selected for field measurements. The field work included measurements made with portable seismic properties analyzer (PSPA), falling weight deflectometer (FWD), core collection, and dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) at multiple locations at each site. Original construction records, soil logs, and soil classification data were consulted as well. The FWD and DCP data were used to determine the resilient moduli and layer coefficients of aggregate base and stabilized subgrade and the resilient modulus of the unstabilized subgrade. Several methods of data analysis were used, including back calculation using finite element modeling from the FWD data and estimation of modulus from the DCP data and soil classification using procedures given in the 1993 AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures, ODOT's Pavement Design Manual, and a report for ODOT written by Eddie Chou [2004]. As borne out by FWD and DCP measurements, both cement stabilization and lime stabilization resulted in significant long term increases in the modulus of the stabilized subgrade relative to the unstabilized subgrade. The modulus and stiffness of the base is also increased because it is confined by the stabilized soil underneath and the pavement on top. The significant increase in the modulus of the base and stabilized subgrade has an impact on the thickness design of pavement.
