Inverse modeling refers to the determination of the entire reservoir permeability under steady state single-phase flow regime, given only field permeability, pressure and production well measurements. FIAT solves the forward and inverse partial differential equations (PDEs) simultaneously by adding a regularization term and filtering pressure gradients. An implicit adaptive-grid, Galerkin, numerical scheme is used to numerically solve the set of PDEs subject to pressure and permeability boundary conditions. Three examples are presented. Results from all three cases demonstrate attainable and reasonably accurate solutions and, more importantly, provide insights into the consequences of data undersampling.

In general, reservoir description can be defined as the process of describing various reservoir characteristics (e.g., porosity, permeabiIity, thickness,etc.) that honor all the available data (e.g., geological, geophysical, petrophysical,production data). The appropriate way to reach this goal is to integrate all available data from different sources; geologic knowledge, seismic data, well test pressure data, production history, etc. However, how to efficiently integrate all these data coming from different sources is a challenge to the person or team working inreservoir description area.Although, geostatistical methods (Kriging, cokriging, etc. ) are well-suited tointegrate static (1inear or hard) data coming from geology, logs, seismic and core analysis, they are limited when applied to dynamic data such as well test pressure,tracer test and production data. Because dynamic data are non-linear with respect tomodel parameters, conditioning to dynamic data possesses some difficulties. inrecent years, it has been shown that the inverse problem theory based on Bayesian estimation provides a powerful methodology not only to generate rock property fields conditioned to both static and dynamic data, but also to assess the uncertaintyin performance predictions. To date, standard applications of inverse problem theory given in the literature assume that rock property tields obey multinormal(Gaussian) distribution and are second order stationary. in this work, the main objective is to extend the inverse problem theory to cases where rock property tields( only porosity and permeabiIity tields are considered) come from fractal distributions so that one can be able to generate fractal rock property tields conditioned to both static and well test pressure data.Recent studies have shown that ftactals like fractional Gaussian noise (fGn) and fractional Brownian motion ( fBm) are promising approaches to characterize porosity and/or permeabiIity , in general the hydraulic property variations in the subsurface.in the literature, there exist stochastic interpolation methods that can be used to generate conditional fractal simulations honoring variograms and hard data(measurements of porosity and permeabiIity at wells). However, there exists nostudy in the literature that considers generating fractal flelds conditioned to dynamicdata, in particular to well-test pressure data. Thus, the objective of this work is togenerate fractal (fGn and fBm) porosity and permeability tields conditioned tovariograms, hard data and well-test pressure data by using the inverse problemtheory .The thesis is organized as follows. In Chapter 2, we begin by presenting the theoryof fractal and fractal distributions in detail. Because, in this work, we define rockproperty fields, specifically permeability and porosity , using the fractaldistributions, we note various statistical properties of fGn and ffim distributions.We also provide the methods that can be used to generate unconditional realizationsof isotropic or anisotropic ffim/fGn random functions. In Chapter 3, we review theinverse problem theory based on Bayesian estimation, because in this study, we usethis theory to generate rock property fields (porosity and permeability) conditioned to both well-test pressure, static ( core and well log) and geostatistical data. Becauseour objective in this study is to extend the inverse problem methodology to generateporosity and permeability fields that show fractal (fGn and ffim) behavior, we show how one can extend the commonly used inverse problem methodology based onstationary Gaussian fields to fractal fields. In Chapter 4, we present one, two, andthree dimensional applications of inverse problem theory based on Bayesian estimation (explained in Chapter 3) to generate fGn/fBm porosity and 1n-permeability fields conditioned to well-test pressure, static ( core and well log) and geostatistical data for single phase problems. In Chapter 5, we study transport over fracture network that can be considered as a fractal object. We present fractal pressure transient behavior and analysis of a single or multiple vertical well systems (with wellbore storage and skin effects) producing in fractured reservoirs without matrix participation. Nonlinear regression analysis for pressure data from such systems is presented and discussed for analysis purposes. Also, analysis of aninterference pressure data from Kizildere geothermal field using fractal model is presented.

Book excerpt: Petroleum reservoir parameter inference is a challenging problem to many of the reservoir simulation work flows, especially when it comes to real reservoirs with high degree of complexity and non-linearity, and high dimensionality. In fact, the process of estimating a large number of unknowns in an inverse problem lead to a very costly computational effort. Moreover, it is very important to perform geologically consistent reservoir parameter adjustments as data is being assimilated in the history matching process, i.e., the process of adjusting the parameters of reservoir system in order to match the output of the reservoir model with the previous reservoir production data. As a matter of fact, it is of great interest to approximate reservoir petrophysical properties like permeability and porosity while reparameterizing these parameters through reduced-order models. As we will show, petroleum reservoir models are commonly described by in general complex, nonlinear, and large-scale, i.e., large number of states and unknown parameters. Thus, having a practical approach to reduce the number of reservoir parameters in order to reconstruct the reservoir model with a lower dimensionality is of high interest. Furthermore, de-correlating system parameters in all history matching and reservoir characterization problems keeping the geological description intact is paramount to control the ill-posedness of the system. In the first part of the present work, we will introduce the advantages of a novel parameterization method by means of higher order singular value decomposition analysis (HOSVD). We will show that HOSVD outperforms classical parameterization techniques with respect to computational and implementation cost. It also, provides more reliable and accurate predictions in the petroleum reservoir history matching problem due to its capability to preserve geological features of the reservoir parameter like permeability. The promising power of HOSVD is investigated through several synthetic and real petroleum reservoir benchmarks and all results are compared to that of classic SVD. In addition to the parameterization problem, we also addressed the ability of HOSVD in producing accurate production data comparing to those of original reservoir system. To generate the results of the present work, we employ a commercial reservoir simulator known as ECLIPSE. In the second part of the work, we will address the inverse modeling, i.e., the reservoir history matching problem. We employed the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) which is an ensemble-based characterization approach to solve the inverse problem. We also, integrate our new parameterization technique into the EnKF algorithm to study the suitability of HOSVD based parameterization for reducing the dimensionality of parameter space and for estimating geologically consistence permeability distributions. The results of the present work illustrates the characteristics of the proposed parameterization method by several numerical examples in the second part including synthetic and real reservoir benchmarks. Moreover, the HOSVD advantages are discussed by comparing its performance to the classic SVD (PCA) parameterization approach. Book excerpt: Inverse modeling techniques for estimating reservoir parameters (e.g., Transmissivity, Permeability, etc.) utilize some secondary information (e.g., hydraulic head or production data at well locations) to estimate reservoir parameters. Ensemble-based data assimilation methods are one such class of inverse modeling techniques. Ensemble Kalman filters (EnKF) in specific are built around the basic framework where modeling parameters such as transmissivity, permeability, storativity, porosity, hydraulic head, phase-saturation are included within a state vector psi^f that are updated to psi^a, based on the available dynamic data. Although EnKF presents the ability to update a large number of parameters successively as data becomes available, it suffers from some major drawbacks. It is optimal only in the case when the multivariate joint distribution describing the state vector is multi-Gaussian. Also, a linear update equation comprised of covariance values between the observed variables and update parameter and covariance between the different observed variables are used in EnKF. These assumptions and simplifications result in models that yield inaccurate predictions of reservoir performance.The aim of this research work is to propose a novel method for data assimilation which is free from the Gaussian and linear transfer function assumptions. This new method can be used to sequentially assimilate dynamic data into reservoir models using an ensemble based approach. Updating is performed in the indicator space where modeling is performed non-parametrically and the indicator transform is insensitive to non-linear operations. It is demonstrated that this indicator transform helps us achieve the desired generality which is a shortcoming of EnKF. Because the expected value of indicators directly yield the probability corresponding to an outcome, the method can be used to quantify the residual uncertainty in spatial description of reservoir properties. Because at all steps of the process an ensemble of models is available, so quantification of residual uncertainty in prediction forecasts is possible. Another advantage is that the data assimilation is sequential in nature implying that the updates can be performed in a quasi-real time sense as data becomes available.
