Bowie, r., of the Irrigation and Drainage Investigations of this Office. This report shows that for market gardens and for meadows irrigation in humid sections has proven profitable, but it has not yet been practiced in the raising of general farm crops. The cost of securing water supplies in the East far exceeds that in the arid regions, although water is much more plentiful. This suggests that it may be possible to so reduce the cost of water as to render irrigation profitable for many crops which will not repay the expense now incurred. The descriptions of irrigation practice contained in this report should be suggestive to many who are now raising truck without the aid of irrigation, and it is therefore rec ommended that the report be published as a bulletin of this Office. Field Station, 1941-44 The tabulated data show a wide range in crop yields, believed to be due chiefly to differences in the soil fertility, resulting from differences in crop sequences and fertilizer applications. In conducting these rotation experiments the aim was to provide the crops with good cultural care, including an ample-supply of water in the root-zone reservoir. The crops were not intentionally irrigated excessively nor were they allowed to suffer for lack of water. The table shows that in respect to each crop there were great differ enoce in the quantity of irrigation water applied. These differences were not predetermined, nor was the time of irrigation decided in advance. Each plot was irrigated when the condition of the soil or of the crop indicated that it should be, and the quantity applied was determined in the light of long practice and experience. It is possible that in some cases more water might well have been applied and also that in some cases more was applied than could be held in the root zone reservoir. In the latter case there would be, of course, some loss by deep percolation. The detailed data do not indicate that the crop yields were limited through lack of irrigation water. It was suggested that the-soil-moisture conditions in sections Where the winter precipitation was light might be - very much improved if {the soil 'was saturated with irrigation water after the crop was removed in the fall. it seemed likely that an applica tion of water at this time would afford an opportunity for establishing satisfactory moisture conditions, not only In the surface soil but in the subsoil to a depth cf 6 feet or more during the time elapsing between fall irrigation and the planting of crops the following spring. It was thought that if this were true better crops might be produced in certain irrigated sections of the Great Plains area if fall irriga'tion were practiced. In order to determine what effect fall irrigation would have on the crops grown, a series of experiments was started at the Scottsbluff Experiment Farm in the fall of 1910. These experiments-were continued inl91-1, 1912, and results are now available fer consideration. Ah account of these experiments and the results secured is given in this bulletin.
