Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two possible approaches to applying ion implantation to the modification of the corrosion behavior of metals and alloys. The first approach is to use ion implantation to produce metastable or amorphous corrosion-resistant surface alloys that are inaccessible by conventional metallurgical techniques, and to apply them to specific applications where corrosion is a severe problem. Secondly, and of a more fundamental nature, ion implantation can be used to introduce controlled amounts of various elements into the surface of a metal as part of a research effort to identify the mechanisms responsible for certain forms of general and localized corrosion. The technique of alloying to produce more corrosion resistant materials is widely used and the choice of a particular alloying element is usually based on the fact that it will enhance the formation of a passive film or will reduce the rate of the various cathodic processes that occur on the metal's surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conferences have been held in the past on atomic collision phenomena and on the applications of ion beams to semiconductors. However, within the past year it became apparent that there is a growing new area of active research involving the use of ion beams to modify and study the basic properties of metals. As a result a topical conference was organized to bring together for the first time scientists with a wide range of backgrounds and interests related to this field. This book contains the proceed ings of the International Conference on Applications of Ion Beams to Metals which was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, October 2-4, 1973. Much of the work presented herein represents ideas and concepts which have had little or no previous exposure in the open literature. The application of ion beams to superconducting prop erties for example is quite new, as is the chapter on ion induced surface reactions, which includes primarily oxidation and corrosion studies of implanted materials. These areas, as well as the chapter on implantation alloy formation, indicate important future areas of the application of ion beams to metals. A reading of the chapters on superconductivity and on oxida tion and corrosion can serve to bring one up to date on nearly all the existing information in these areas of the ion beam mod ification of metals. A broad perspective of the oxidation area is given in the invited paper by G. Dearnaley.

Book excerpt: Ion implantation is one of the key processing steps in silicon integrated circuit technology. Some integrated circuits require up to 17 implantation steps and circuits are seldom processed with less than 10 implantation steps. Controlled doping at controlled depths is an essential feature of implantation. Ion beam processing can also be used to improve corrosion resistance, to harden surfaces, to reduce wear and, in general, to improve materials properties. This book presents the physics and materials science of ion implantation and ion beam modification of materials. It covers ion-solid interactions used to predict ion ranges, ion straggling and lattice disorder. Also treated are shallow-junction formation and slicing silicon with hydrogen ion beams. Topics important for materials modification, such as ion-beam mixing, stresses, and sputtering, are also described.

Komarov draws largely on his own research (and 590 references) to address the problems associated with directional ion beam modification of the physicochemical properties of the near- surface regions of metal and alloys. He examines the primary processes accompanying the passage of fast ions in crystals and secondary processes such as annealing and ageing; and he shows the possibilities for using ion beam alloying for controlling the mechanical, tribological, corrosion, and catholytic properties of metals and alloys. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome of the NATO institute on surface modification which was held in Trevi, 1981. Surface modification and alloying by ion, electron or laser beams is proving to be one of the most burgeoning areas of materials science. The field covers such diverse areas as integrated circuit processing to fabricating wear and corrosion resistant surfaces on mechanical components. The common scientific questions of interest are the microstructures by the different energy deposition techniques. and associated physical properties produced The chapters constitute a critical review of the various subjects covered at Trevi. Each chapter author took responsibility for the overall review and used contributions from the many papers presented at the meeting; each participant gave a presentation. The contributors are listed at the start of each chapter. We took this approach to get some order in a large and diverse field. We are indebted to all the contributors, in particular the chapter authors for working the many papers into coherent packages; to Jim Mayer for hosting a workshop of chapter authors at Cornell and to Ian Bubb who did a sterling job in working over some of the manuscripts. Our special thanks are due to the text processing center at Bell Labs who took on the task of assembling the book. In particular Karen Lieb and Beverly Heravi typed the whole manuscript and had the entire book phototypeset using the Bell Laboratories UNIXTM system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is intended for a one-semester course in corrosion science at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. The approach is that of a physical chemist or materials scientist, and the text is geared toward students of chemistry, materials science, and engineering. This textbook should also be useful to practicing corrosion engineers or materials engineers who wish to enhance their understanding of the fundamental principles of corrosion science. It is assumed that the student or reader does not have a background in electrochemistry. However, the student or reader should have taken at least an undergraduate course in materials science or physical chemistry. More material is presented in the textbook than can be covered in a one-semester course, so the book is intended for both the classroom and as a source book for further use. This book grew out of classroom lectures which the author presented between 1982 and the present while a professorial lecturer at George Washington University, Washington, DC, where he organized and taught a graduate course on “Environmental Effects on Materials.” Additional material has been provided by over 30 years of experience in corrosion research, largely at the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC and also at the Bethlehem Steel Company, Bethlehem, PA and as a Robert A. Welch Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas. The text emphasizes basic principles of corrosion science which underpin extensions to practice.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ion implantation technique was used in order to improve the surface mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of iron and steel. Nitrogen implantation was found to improve the fatigue lifetime and cavitation resistance of 1018 steel. TEM and internal friction studies were carried out in order to determine the nature of this strengthening mechanism. Phosphorous implantation into 304 stainless steel was shown to produce a microcrystalline surface alloy saturated with P. Combined electrochemical and XPS studies revealed that the general corrosion of 304 in deaerated 1N H2SO4 is improved, this effect being due to the formation of a modified passive film. Finally, a study is reported of the radiation effects resulting from the ion implantation AS(+)yields Au and Fe(+) yields Al. The resulting surface alloys were studied using HVEM.

This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the interaction between ions and metallic targets as well as energy loss processes during ion implantation and irradiation. Ion bombardments of targets cause changes in surface layer chemical composition, radiation defect formation, sputtering, blistering, swelling and ion mixing. These effects modify surface topography, crystalline structure, electrical and tribological properties of metals and alloys. The book presents research on the effects of the implantation and irradiation on the friction and wear of modified materials, as well as practical applications of ion implantation and irradiation. It offers a review of current problems related to the modification of materials via irradiation. In addition, computer programs for modeling the depth of ions and vacancies in a sample are presented, and potential causes of disagreement between modeling and experimental results are described. Finally, the book provides evidence of the long-range effect. Effect of Ion Irradiation on the Properties of Metals and Alloys is aimed at academics investigating the properties of metals and alloys after irradiation and/or implantation as well as for students of engineering and physical and chemical sciences. The book is also useful for those looking for up-to-date information on these methods and ways of solving related problems, and for designers of equipment used in places exposed to high ion irradiation or to cosmic space.
