Book Synopsis History of Russian Underwater Acoustics by : Oleg A. Godin
Download or read book History of Russian Underwater Acoustics written by Oleg A. Godin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 1272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses in depth many of the key problems in non-equilibrium physics. The origin of macroscopic irreversible behavior receives particular attention and is illustrated in the framework of solvable models. An updated discussion on the linear response focuses on the correct electrodynamic aspects, which are essential for example, in the proof of the Nyquist theorem. The material covers the scaling relationship between different levels of description (kinetic to hydrodynamic) as well as spontaneous symmetry breaking in real time in terms of nonlinear dynamics (attractors), illustrated using the example of Bose-Einstein condensation. The presentation also includes the latest developments - quantum kinetics - related to modern ultrafast spectroscopy, where transition from reversible to irreversible behavior occurs.
Download or read book Physics of Sound in the Sea written by and published by Peninsula Pub. This book was released on 1989 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PHYSICS OF SOUND IN THE SEA is the distillate of the brightest, most creative minds in the underwater acoustics community during World War II. The primary wartime effort to understand the underwater acoustic environment for the purpose of submarine and antisubmarine warfare was directed by the Subsurface Warfare Division of the National Defense Research Committee. This division organized and directed programs and studies to combine theory with experiment in order to characterize underwater sound transmission for immediate wartime application. Participating in these studies were staff members from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, Columbia, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the U.S. Navy - namely, the Bureau of Ships (now Naval Sea Systems Command), the Radio and Sound Laboratory (now Naval Underwater Systems Center at San Diego), and the Naval Research Laboratory. Dr. Lyman Spitzer, Jr., Director of the Sonar Analysis Group within the Subsurface Warfare Division was responsible for the preparation of Physics of Sound in the Sea. His key editors, named in the Foreword of the book, and many others, unmanned, created an authoritative, understandable underwater sound reference book every bit as useful today as when first written.

Book Synopsis Report of a Survey of US Academic Programs in Ocean and Underwater Acoustics by : K. W. Lackie
Download or read book Report of a Survey of US Academic Programs in Ocean and Underwater Acoustics written by K. W. Lackie and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater acoustics remains the principal means to detect and locate submarines and other underwater objects. For this reason, the Office of Naval Research has sponsored a vigorous research program in underwater acoustics and related fields at both academic institutions and Navy in house organizations for many years. Unfortunately, no other Federal Government funding agency sponsors research in this area, and as a result the health, strength, and growth of the field in the US depends entirely on the ONR program. Interviews of senior U.S. acoustician and visits to a number of major institutions indicate that recent reductions in Naval research budgets have caused a significant decline in the vitality of the ocean acoustics research community in the U.S., especially in its capability to train graduate students in at sea experimental techniques and maintain its sea going infrastructure. Although a number of initiatives are identified that would improve the situation, only an increase in financial support will completely solve the problem. The current level of Federal funding is inadequate to support long-term Navy requirements for acoustician, though it may be adequate for the current environment of reduced budgets and priorities. The strength of this field, virtually the only one entrusted entirely to ONR's care, is not being sustained.
Book Synopsis Applied Underwater Acoustics by : Thomas Neighbors
Download or read book Applied Underwater Acoustics written by Thomas Neighbors and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Underwater Acoustics meets the needs of scientists and engineers working in underwater acoustics and graduate students solving problems in, and preparing theses on, topics in underwater acoustics. The book is structured to provide the basis for rapidly assimilating the essential underwater acoustic knowledge base for practical application to daily research and analysis. Each chapter of the book is self-supporting and focuses on a single topic and its relation to underwater acoustics. The chapters start with a brief description of the topic’s physical background, necessary definitions, and a short description of the applications, along with a roadmap to the chapter. The subtopics covered within individual subchapters include most frequently used equations that describe the topic. Equations are not derived, rather, assumptions behind equations and limitations on the applications of each equation are emphasized. Figures, tables, and illustrations related to the sub-topic are presented in an easy-to-use manner, and examples on the use of the equations, including appropriate figures and tables are also included. Provides a complete and up-to-date treatment of all major subjects of underwater acoustics Presents chapters written by recognized experts in their individual field Covers the fundamental knowledge scientists and engineers need to solve problems in underwater acoustics Illuminates, in shorter sub-chapters, the modern applications of underwater acoustics that are described in worked examples Demands no prior knowledge of underwater acoustics, and the physical principles and mathematics are designed to be readily understood by scientists, engineers, and graduate students of underwater acoustics Includes a comprehensive list of literature references for each chapter
