Download or read book Cold War Broadcasting written by A. Ross Johnson and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was not a matter of propaganda ... black and white ideological broadcasts ... What made [Radio Free Europe] important were its impartiality, independence, and objectivity."---Vaclav Havel "Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty were critically important weapons in the free world's competition with Soviet totalitarianism---and without them the Soviet bloc might even have not disintegrated ... The account in this book of their activities is therefore not only informative, but critical to understanding recent history."---Zbigniew Brzezinski "The studies and translated Soviet bloc documents published in this book demonstrate the enormous impact of Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty, and Voice of America during the Cold War. By promoting democratic values and undermining the monopoly of information on which Communist regimes relied, the Radios contributed greatly to the end of the Cold War."---George P. Shultz "I know of no other mass media organization that has done more than RFE/RL to help create the Europe in which we live today---a Europe not divided into two opposing camps."---Elena Bonner Examines the role of Western broadcasting to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe during the Cold War, with a focus on Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty. It includes chapters by radio veterans and by scholars who have conducted research on the subject in once-secret Soviet bloc archives and in Western records. It also contains a selection of translated documents from formerly secret Soviet and East European archives, most of them published here for the first time.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB), which is funded by the U.S. Government through the presidentially appointed Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), was established in 1990 to oversee the operations of Radio and TV Martí, two broadcast services that provide Spanish-language news, features, and entertainment programs to Cuba. In addition to radio and television, OCB has an Internet site, all of which are known collectively as the Martís. The Voice of America (VOA) Latin America Division broadcasts in Spanish to all Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, except Cuba, and in Creole to Haiti and other Creole-speaking Caribbean countries. Employing radio, television, social media, and Web sites, the division seeks to engage with the people of the hemisphere, in particular its growing population of young people. Russian language broadcasting by U.S. Government international broadcast entities has been a priority since the early days of the Cold War. The Voice of America (VOA) Russian Service, a Federal broadcasting entity, has provided programming to Russia and other former Soviet republics continuously since 1947. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), a private, non-profit grantee corporation, which has been broadcasting in Russia since 1953, receives Federal funding from the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG). This book discusses all of these broadcasting entities and provides internal assessments of each.

Book Synopsis Soviet Internationalism after Stalin by : Tobias Rupprecht
Download or read book Soviet Internationalism after Stalin written by Tobias Rupprecht and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soviet Union is often presented as a largely isolated and idiosyncratic state. Soviet Internationalism after Stalin challenges this view by telling the story of Soviet and Latin American intellectuals, students, political figures and artists, and their encounters with the 'other' from the 1950s through the 1980s. In this first multi-archival study of Soviet relations with Latin America, Tobias Rupprecht reveals that, for people in the Second and Third Worlds, the Cold War meant not only confrontation with an ideological enemy but also increased interconnectedness with distant world regions. He shows that the Soviet Union looked quite different from a southern rather than a Western point of view and also charts the impact of the new internationalism on the Soviet Union itself in terms of popular perceptions of the USSR's place in the world and its political, scientific, intellectual and cultural reintegration into the global community.

Book Synopsis External Powers in Latin America by : Gian Luca Gardini
Download or read book External Powers in Latin America written by Gian Luca Gardini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of external powers in Latin America in the 21st century. Non-traditional partners have significantly increased their political and economic engagement with the continent. Five key questions arise: why has this surge taken place; when has it happened; in which regions and sectors is it mostly felt; what is the Latin American perspective; and what are the actual results? The book analyses 16 case studies: the United States, the European Union, China, Russia, Japan, Canada, India, Turkey, Iran, Israel, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, the ASEAN countries, South Africa and Australia. The spectrum of existing explanations in the literature spans from neo-extractivism to South-South cooperation. This volume places them in context and proposes a more multifaceted approach, stressing a combination of systemic factors and internal dynamics both in Latin America and in the external partner countries. Geopolitics still matters and so do nation states, their interests and leaders. Ultimately, this surge in engagement has largely reproduced past patterns. Are new partners that different from the old ones?
