Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directory of the American Agricultural Organizations, 1920 In its compilation lists based on the latest authentic facts have been brought up to date through the courteous cooperation of the chiefs of various bureaus of the United States Department of Agri culture, that of State commissioners of agriculture or other State agricultural officials, and of the general secretaries of the great national farmer organizations like the National Grange, the National Board of Farm Organizations, and similar associations. The correct and complete lists returned by these general secretaries (for the farmer organizations) and by these State departments of agriculture (for the State organizations) have been the final author ity in preparing the Directory. Such lists were received from 43 States and from approximately two-thirds of the 410 national and regional agricultural organiza tions listed. The farmer organizations of State scope were reported to us by the national organizations of the same class, or by the State commissioner of agriculture. This highly valuable cooperation is hereby acknowledged with sincere appreciation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A long-dominant reading of American politics holds that public policy in the United States is easily captured by special interest groups. Countering this view, Adam Sheingate traces the development of government intervention in agriculture from its nineteenth-century origins to contemporary struggles over farm subsidies. His considered conclusion is that American institutions have not given agricultural interest groups any particular advantages in the policy process, in part because opposing lobbies also enjoy access to policymakers. In fact, the high degree of conflict and pluralism maintained by American institutions made possible substantial retrenchment of the agricultural welfare state during the 1980s and 1990s. In Japan and France--two countries with markedly different institutional characters than the United States--powerful agricultural interests and a historically close relationship between farmers, bureaucrats, and politicians continue to preclude a roll-back of farm subsidies. This well-crafted study not only puts a new spin on agricultural policy, but also makes a strong case for the broader claim that the relatively decentralized American political system is actually less prone to capture and rule by subgovernments than the more centralized political systems found in France and Japan. Sheingate's historical, comparative approach also demonstrates, in a widely useful way, how past institutional developments shape current policies and options.

Book excerpt: The theme of the 1987/88 annual review of the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy (NCFAP) specifically considers that while the world in which agricultural policy operates has changed dramatically over the decades, agricultural policies have not taken account of those changes in any fundamental way. Originally published in 1988, this volume examines the setting in which U.S. agriculture finds itself and suggests an agenda for future policy. This title is a valuable resource for policy makers and students interested in environmental studies, agricultural practices, and national policy.

This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation. To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world. In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
