Book excerpt: In August 2001 - one month before 9/11 - a gang of Southern California car thieves find themselves blackmailed by a band of Asian insurgents into smuggling guns for gold and eventually leading a charge against a prison garrison in Western China. Their most formidable adversary is not the Chinese Army guarding the garrison, but the American F-16s attacking from above, dispatched by the president of the United States. Hunted by the FBI, infiltrated by the CIA, and compromised by an international network of espionage operatives and assassins, these street-wise G-Riders must navigate through the perils of an entire world that’s determined to bring them down. Composed of disgruntled Vietnam veterans, displaced Native Americans, disenfranchised foreigners, and a feisty clique of lesbian desperados, this gang of professional thieves ignores the threat of exposure and ultimately puts their lives on the line for a cause and a code only they understand.

Book excerpt: Coming to Terms: The Collected Works of Jane Blankenship, an edited collection from Jane Blankenship and Janette Kenner Muir, is the story of one academic journey through self-discovery, intellectual development, and mentorship. It is a conversation that illustrates how, in Mary Catherine Bateson’s terms, one composes a life that has meaning and makes a significant difference in other lives as well. Jane Blankenship was an active member of the speech communication discipline, starting with her first job teaching in the Rhetoric and Composition program at Mount Holyoke College and finishing with the great distinction of Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. As a noted rhetorical scholar in both criticism and theory, Jane Blankenship was a long-time leader within the National Communication Association (including one of a handful of women who served as president in the 20th Century), and an award winner of numerous teaching and scholarship awards. Throughout her academic career, Blankenship made important contributions to the understanding of language and form, specific literary critics such as Kenneth Burke and Samuel Coleridge, and the role of women in politics. Most importantly, she worked with and inspired a cadre of graduate students who continue to reflect her ideas and perspectives in their own work, particularly in the area of political communication. Through her writing and mentoring, she impacted and changed thousands of lives. Coming to Terms brings together some of the significant pieces that marked Jane Blankenship’s career and also shows the process wherein one makes choices in writing and publishing that underscore the interrelationship between scholarship and teaching—an important element throughout her academic life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Myers? David Myers has become the world’s best-selling introductory psychology author by serving the needs of instructors and students so well. Each Myers textbook offers an impeccable combination of up-to-date research, well-crafted pedagogy, and effective media and supplements. Most of all, each Myers text demonstrates why this author’s style works so well for students, with his signature compassionate, companionable voice, and superb judgment about how to communicate the science of psychology and its human impact. Why Modules? This modules-based version of Myers’ best-selling, full-length text, Psychology (breaking down that book’s 16 chapters into 59 short modules) is yet another example of the author’s ability to understand what works in the classroom. It comes from Myers’ experiences with students who strongly prefer textbooks divided into briefer segments instead of lengthier chapters, and with instructors who appreciate the flexibility offered by the modular format. Modular organization presents material in smaller segments. Students can easily read any module in a single sitting. Self-standing modules. Instructors can assign modules in their own preferred order. The modules make no assumptions about what students have previously read. Illustrations and key terms are repeated as needed. This modular organization of short, stand-alone text units enhances teacher flexibility. Instead of assigning the entire Sensation and Perception chapter, instructors can assign the module on vision, the module on hearing, and/or the module on the other senses in whatever order they choose. Book excerpt: In this first in-depth and wide-ranging history of Christian conversion, David Kling examines the dynamic of turning to the Christian faith by individuals, families, and people groups. Global in reach and engaging recent methods and theories in conversion studies, the narrative progresses from early Christian beginnings in the Roman world to Christianity's expansion into Europe, the Americas, China, India, and Africa. Although conversion is often associated with a particular strand of modern Christianity (evangelical) and a particular type of experience (sudden, overwhelming), when examined over two millennia, it emerges as a phenomenon far more complex than any one-dimensional profile would suggest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this remarkable book, the oft-told narrative of Sir Walter Raleigh is blown apart through the chance discovery of hitherto neglected Dutch correspondence found in a Swedish archive. Following an exciting paper-trail through Jacobean history to modern-day Venezuela, Professor Sellin makes a convincing case for Raleigh's innocence of the charges that led him to the block in 1618. Spurred on by these documents, Sellin undertook two excursions up the Orinoco river in Raleigh's wake, using Raleigh's 1596 book The Discoverie of Guiana as a guide. These trips convinced him that, far from being a fanciful blend of fact and fiction, the Discoverie is a remarkably accurate and verifiable document, which allowed him to locate Raleigh's gold lode on Cerro Redondo, a short distance inland from present-day Los Castillos, Venezuela. In place of a deceitful and scheming Raleigh, Sellin demonstrates how the Duke of Buckingham manoeuvred to have Raleigh executed on trumped-up charges. This left the way open for him to conspire with foreign powers to try to acquire the very mine he claimed Raleigh had invented to justify his actions against Spanish interests in Venezuela. It is rare for a scholarly book to profoundly shake widely-accepted views of so well-known an historical figure as Sir Walter Raleigh, but that is exactly what Paul Sellin achieves here. Crammed with tales of treasure, treason, murder, and international intrigue, this book make us think afresh of one of the greatest Elizabethan heroes. Written in a relaxed and engaging style, it will be of interest not only to specialists of the period but to anyone with a sense of the romance of history.
