Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysia produced a total of 7.8 million tonnes of crude palm oil in 1995. Associated with this, approximately 22 million tonnes of liquid waste (POME), were generated. The palm oil industry faces a serious problem dealing with this waste, as this large volume of liquid waste would create serious pollution to receiving watercources if they are discharged untreated. This paper reviews the treatment approaches and techniques of POME which have been adopted in Malaysia in the past: skimming devices, land disposal, use as animal fodders, ultrafiltration, chemical coagulation and flocculation and various aerobic and anaerobic processes. Anaerobic digestion, a ...

Download or read book Treatment Process of Palm Oil Mill Effluent written by Harry Chong Lye Hin and published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Press. This book was released on 2020-05-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabah is generally known for its ecotourism, biodiversity and natural resources. It is a major oil palm planter in Malaysia. While there are books written on the ecological and economical aspects of the oil palm industry, there is no book written specifically on the treatment processes of palm oil mill effluent. This book is written based on a year study case in a medium-sized palm oil mill in the northern region of Sabah. It is written in the simplest way of expression and accompanied by many photos and diagrams to ease understanding. Discussions include treatment processes that occurred in the pre-, primary, secondary and tertiary treatment stages. Readers will find it to be a useful reference especially university students.

Book Synopsis International Perspectives on Water Quality Management and Pollutant Control by : Nigel W.T. Quinn
Download or read book International Perspectives on Water Quality Management and Pollutant Control written by Nigel W.T. Quinn and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The level of surface water quality protection is variable around the world in large part due to the relative effectiveness of environmental regulation and the degree to which science influences the regulatory process. In the United States, at the federal level, the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) has been an effective policy and water quality management tool for dealing with both point source and non-point source pollution. The TMDL provides a rational framework for estimating the assimilative capacity of the receiving water body for certain contaminants and applying factors of safety and incorporating acceptable levels of water quality criteria violation - provided the local stakeholders have a say in the decision making process. This collection of articles from around the world are good examples of the application of sound scientific principles to solve pressing water quality problems.

Book Synopsis Performance of an Upflow Anaerobic Biofilter for Treatment of POME by : A. Suki
Download or read book Performance of an Upflow Anaerobic Biofilter for Treatment of POME written by A. Suki and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The upflow anaerobic packed bed biofilter was evaluated to determine its effectiveness in treating Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). Three reactors with total volumes of 52, 52 and 290 litres and packed with 1/2, 1 and 1 inch rings were evaluated. The results shows a COD removal ranging from 66% to 94% and an SS removal ranging from 77 to 94% depending on the loading rate. Retention times used were 5 and 10 days and high removal rate was still possible at the low retention time. Start up for the reactor is within one month and growth of the biomass probably required more than two months. The removal of nutrient were also assessed. [Authors' abstract].
