He refuses to let anyone see him cry. Just as they are leaving, the fine mist that has been falling turns in to a steady rain. A short time later, Cygnet A. DeKeigh is welcomed to his new home: an asylum. Thankfully, Cygs new home is temporary and he is eventually released back into the poverty-stricken world that surrounds the Appalachian Mountains as the only child of unruly and unstable parents. As he continues a coming-of-age journey fraught with trials, tribulations, and triumphs, Cyg must somehow navigate through emotional upheavals, roller coaster relationships, and good and evil. Finally as he completes high school, Cyg has the chance to reflect on his experiences, his lessons, and most importantly, how he will pursue his dreams. Up There at the House shares the provocative account of a boys coming-of-age journey in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky as he learns about life, love, and the value of an education.

Ingrid and Winnie López have lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for eight years, but their friends Skylar and Zora Williams—the new first daughters—are about to move into the White House with their mom, the president-elect. What the Williamses don’t know is that incoming presidents’ families are often pranked by the folks they’re replacing, and Ingrid and Winnie take that tradition very seriously. But when the four girls get wrapped up in an ever-escalating exchange of practical jokes and things spiral out of control, can they avoid an international incident? Or will their battle go down in American history and ruin their friendship forever?

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of None of This Is True and Then She Was Gone comes an unforgettable saga that follows the Bird family and how one tragedy ripples throughout their lives for years. Meet the picture-perfect Bird family: pragmatic Meg, dreamy Beth, and towheaded twins Rory and Rhys, one an adventurous troublemaker, the other his slighter, more sensitive counterpart. Their father is a sweet, gangly man, but it’s their beautiful, free-spirited mother Lorelei who spins at the center. In those early years, Lorelei tries to freeze time by filling their simple brick house with precious mementos. Easter egg foils are her favorite. Craft supplies, too. She hangs all of the children’s art, to her husband’s chagrin. Then one Easter weekend, a tragedy so devastating occurs that, almost imperceptibly, it begins to tear the family apart. Years pass and the children have become adults, while Lorelei has become the county’s worst hoarder. She has alienated her husband and children and has been living as a recluse. But then something happens that beckons the Bird family back to the house they grew up in—to finally understand the events of that long-ago Easter weekend and to unearth the many secrets hidden within the nooks and crannies of home.

Book excerpt: Patt Gavin grew up as the third child in a family of nine, mostly boys. Along with his six brothers, they spent their childhood doing the things most boys do: catching animals, making messes and terrorizing their sisters. Growing Up In The House Of Doom is a collection of stories from a time gone by, when life was simpler, and children actually spent time outdoors playing with other children in a real-life setting. A time when children walked or rode their bikes to little league games, and knew it was time to come home when the street lamps came on. Enjoy these memories of a group of boys who enjoyed their childhoods to the fullest, in spite of the objections of their sisters.

This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight time limitations regulate the number of hours that pilots and crew work in order to prevent fatigue. Fatigue contributes 15-20% of fatal aviation incidents caused by human error. In July 2013, Member States of the European Union voted strongly in support of a draft proposal on flight time limitations by the European Commission. Overall, the Commission's draft regulation represents an improvement but concerns remain. Particularly about the apparent reluctance of the Commission when developing these regulations to set a lower limit for the flight duty period at night in accordance with the scientific evidence on this matter. It is disappointing that the UK Government has not pressed for a lower limit. It is also disappointing that a consensus has not been reached on the draft regulations with crew and pilot representatives. It is recommended that the European Scrutiny Committee requests the UK Government to press the Commission to ensure an effective monitoring regime is put in place to examine whether the 11 hour limit is at least as safe as the current regime and that they request the European Commission provide an assessment of the regulation two years after its implementation. The Committee also concluded that: the potential under-reporting of pilot fatigue must be properly recognised if it is to be effectively tackled; information should be regularly published on the use of Commander's discretion to extend their crew's flight duty period if unforeseen circumstances arise; and scientists must have a more central role in the development and assessment of flight time limitation proposals
