Book excerpt: A powerful exploration of grief and resilience following the death of the author's son that combines memoir, reportage, and lessons in how to heal Everyone deals with grief in their own way. Helen Macdonald found solace in training a wild goshawk. Cheryl Strayed found strength in hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. For Carol Smith, a Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist struggling with the sudden death of her seven-year-old son, Christopher, the way to cross the river of sorrow was through work. In Crossing the River, Smith recounts how she faced down her crippling loss through reporting a series of profiles of people coping with their own intense challenges, whether a life-altering accident, injury, or diagnosis. These were stories of survival and transformation, of people facing devastating situations that changed them in unexpected ways. Smith deftly mixes the stories of these individuals and their families with her own account of how they helped her heal. General John Shalikashvili, once the most powerful member of the American military, taught Carol how to face fear with discipline and endurance. Seth, a young boy with a rare and incurable illness, shed light on the totality of her son's experiences, and in turn helps readers see that the value of a life is not measured in days. Crossing the River is a beautiful and profoundly moving book, an unforgettable journey through grief toward hope, and a valuable, illuminating read for anyone coping with loss.

Book excerpt: Angelus is a novel about intense love, duty, and a testament of true friendship and family. It's really a love story, but I think many readers from Teens on up can relate to it, because everyone has to fight their inner demons and the difficulty of choosing right from wrong. Jacob was created as a 7th level Angel whose existence becomes intertwined with Sarah's life. She is a human woman who was raised believing in Angels, but when her own Guardian Angel reveals himself to her, the adventure begins. They become torn between love and duty. So, the Dark Angels Samuel and Seth, along with a legion of Demons see their opportunity to force Jacob to fall. Filled with fighting scenes and powers beyond imagining, one must wonder,... How far would you go to fight for love?

Book excerpt: A wealthy and virtuous man faces the ultimate test of faith in this suspenseful and inspiring modern retelling of Job by the author of The Runaway Prophet. Seth Jacobs has it all—health, wealth, a great career, a mansion in greater Boston, a beautiful wife, and three children. But in a series of reversals beyond his control, Seth loses his many fortunes one after the next. His friends, who suggest God has a reason for inflicting so much loss and pain upon him, challenge Seth’s faith. At the lowest depths of his suffering, Seth asks God—as we all do—“Why is this happening to me?” And he receives an unexpected answer. A modern-day story based on the Bible’s Book of Job, The Faithful One inspires us all to keep our faith in the Lord no matter what. “Chynoweth constructs—and then deconstructs—Seth’s life with an eye for detail and an inventive sense of how one tragedy can beget the next.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: In Fowl Play, author Steven Leigh Morris weaves his two great passions in life: the theater and barnyard poultry. As print media crumbles around him, veteran Los Angeles theater critic Seth Jacobson hatches a flock of chickens and negotiates a fragile pact with his neighbors (and his sanity) to house them in the garden of his Hollywood condominium. In the throes of personal and professional erosion (Seth’s Russian wife has left California for her homeland, apparently never to return), Seth clings to his three hens and one noisy aggressive rooster as if they are family and objects of his unyielding devotion. In this complex fantasy and comedic microcosm of global conflict, all creatures (some with wit, some with wings), seek refuge in an acrimonious and often violent world.

Book excerpt: A Book in the Home Series When Eli Block steps into his parents' living room and sees his childhood crush sitting on the couch, he starts a shameless campaign to seduce the young rabbi. Unfortunately, Seth Cohen barely remembers Eli and he resolutely shuts down all his advances. As a tenuous and then binding friendship forms between the two men, Eli must find a way to move past his unrequited love while still keeping his best friend in his life. Not an easy feat when the same person occupies both roles. Professional, proper Seth is shocked by Eli's brashness, overt sexuality, and easy defiance of societal norms. But he's also drawn to the happy, funny, light-filled man. As their friendship deepens over the years, Seth watches Eli mature into a man he admires and respects. But when Seth finds himself longing for what Eli had so easily offered, he has to decide whether he's willing to veer from his safe life-plan to build a future with Eli.

Book excerpt: This first historical fiction novel of the life events of Jesus and his wife includes information about these two individuals from their situations of conception, birth, and up to the age of ten years old. All of the information in telling their stories has been carefully researched from religious writings, the Bible, other ancient accurate sources from anthropology, historical writing from their contemporary time, and ancient new writing discoveries about these two remarkable people and their life. It follows a guided rabbinic principle known as the halakic principle, which sews their stories together with imagination and careful research by the author doing so in a consecutive, cohesive, and conceptual way for the twenty-first-century reader. The stories incorporate accurate human behavior and progression of their development, which has not changed for us from the time in which they lived. If you desire a more accurate, realistic account of the man whom we know as Jesus, and his wife whom we know as Miriam, or Mary Magdalene, you shall attain greater understanding of them and our own post-modern selves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1935 Professor Robert Newdick of Ohio State University wrote to Robert Frost--already America's most famous living poet--in order to suggest certain revisions in the arrangement of the poet's collected poems. The brief letter was to begin a relationship of nearly five years (ending only with Newdick's untimely death in 1939) in which Newdick assiduously gathered materials from a wide variety of sources for a projected (but not "authorized") Frost biography. Although only part (about 100 pages) of the biography was actually written, Newdick left behind him several files of factual data, as well as observations and comments by Frost and by many people who knew him. These materials have not heretofore been published, nor were they used in any subsequent biography. In the present volume William A. Sutton brings together Newdick's partial biography with his various notes and letters, adding a narrative of the Frost-Newdick relationship which sheds new light on the poet and on the identity of poets. With Newdick, as with subsequent researchers, the fiction-making Frost was often playing a game of hide-and-seek so that he would never be completely "found out" as a mere empirical datum, although there is evidence that his candor with Newdick was at times greater than it would be in later years. Newdick, a perceptive admirer of Frost's poetry, had to struggle with his own realizations of such Frostian characteristics as secretiveness, ambivalence, and capriciousness, and so the book reveals a great poet who could be both generous and arch, a professor relentless in his search for information, a famous man fitfully bothered, then amused by a young academic's earnest efforts on his behalf, and a biographer devoted to, but at times exhausted by, the demands of his biographical subject. Frost appears as one who thought of both biography and biographer as "attractive nuisances." The original materials brought together here manifest, therefore, both a kind of biography, and a chronicle of the act of biography, a fresh look at the creative personality, and a running account of how a biographer attempts to bring such a personality into focus.
