Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winnie the possum and Ernst the otter are back with four new antic tales. In the first, an excursion to Backwater Beach is complicated by the contents of a piggy bank. Then Winnie gets a telescope and must ad-lib, as the viewing for her friends is disrupted by cloud cover. When Winnie and Ernst baby-sit for Mrs. H. Penny, they aren't prepared for her eggs to hatch. And finally, what better diversion for a February than to organize a poetry contest - but who knew what chaos such an event could cause? Children ready for a step up from early Beginning Readers will find plenty more to enjoy in these new stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feet Man has two gigantic problems – his feet. His foot size is triple-extra-umpteen-large. He has never found a shoe that fits him, and whenever people see him, they always point and make fun of him. But then one day he discovers a tiny man stuck between his toes – Mr. Tiny, to be exact. Mr. Tiny has his share of problems, too, but he doesn't let them bother him. He knows that everyone, no matter how unusual, has a talent. And when Mr. Tiny spots an advertisement for the Husky Puppy Shoe Company in the newspaper – "If We Can't Fit Your Size, We'll Give You a Giant Prize!" – he knows that Feet Man is a shoe-in to win. With lively illustrations and pun-ny read-aloud text, this friendship between two characters of vastly different shoe size demonstrates that sometimes it takes an outsider to help us discover what we are best at.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the history of the Ingutsheni Lunatic Asylum (renamed a mental hospital after 1933), situated near Bulawayo in the former Southern Rhodesia, Surfacing Up explores the social, cultural, and political history of the colony that became Zimbabwe after gaining its independence in 1980. The phrase "surfacing up" was drawn from a conversation Lynette A. Jackson had with a psychiatric nurse who used the concept to explain what brought African potential patients into the psychiatric system. Jackson uses Ingutsheni as a reference point for the struggle to "domesticate" Africa and its citizens after conquest. Drawing on the work of Frantz Fanon, Jackson maintains that the asylum in Southern Rhodesia played a significant role in maintaining the colonial social order. She supports Fanon's claim that colonial psychiatric hospitals were repositories for those of "indocile nature" or for those who failed to fit "the social background of the colonial type." Through reconstruction and reinterpretation of patient narratives, Jackson shows how patients were diagnosed, detained, and deemed recovered. She draws on psychiatric case files to analyze the changing economic, social, and environmental conditions of the colonized, the varying needs of the white settlers, and the shifting boundaries between these two communities. She seeks to extend and enrich our understanding of how a significant institution changed the way citizens and subjects experienced the colonial social order.
